:salam2:
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“There comes forth from their [bees’] bellies, a drink of varying colour wherein is healing for men” [al-Nahl 16:69]

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

With regard to the Prophet’s guidance concerning drinking, it is the most perfect guidance that maintains good health.

He (Sallalahi Alahi WaSallam) used to drink honey mixed with cold water.
  • This is very healthy and no one can understand how healthy it is except the most prominent doctors.
  • For drinking honey on an empty stomach dissolves phlegm, cleanses the stomach, reduces its viscosity, washes away waste matter, warms it up a little and opens its inlet and exit.
  • It has a similar effect on the liver, kidneys and urethra.
  • It is more beneficial to the stomach than any other kind of sweet that enters it.
  • However it may cause side effects in people who are suffering from jaundice because it is hot and jaundice is hot, so it may aggravate it; in order to avoid this effect vinegar may be added, then honey will become beneficial and drinking it will be more useful than many or most of the drinks that are made from sugar, especially for those who are not used to these drinks, for if they drink them they will not suit them as well as honey does, or even come close.
* With regard to drinking it when it is collected and well-prepared, this is one of the most beneficial things for the body, and one of the greatest means of preserving health; it is very refreshing and energizing, and it is good for the liver and heart.
  • If it is well-prepared it provides nutrition and makes food reach all parts of the body in the most effective manner.

Zaad al-Ma’aad, 4/224, 225

And he said (may Allaah have mercy on him):

  • Honey contains great benefits, for it cleanses impurities from the veins and stomach etc, whether it is eaten or applied to the skin.

  • It is good for the elderly, the phlegmatic and those whose humours are cold and wet.
  • It is nourishing, aids digestion, energizes, makes unpleasant medicine palatable, is good for the liver and chest, is a diuretic and helps to ease coughs caused by phlegm.

  • If it is drunk warm mixed with rosewater it is beneficial for one who has been bitten by a scorpion or who has consumed opium.

  • If it is drunk on its own mixed with water, it is good for the one who has been bitten by a rabid dog or eaten poisonous mushrooms.

  • If fresh meat is placed in honey, it will stay fresh for three months, as will cucumbers, pumpkins and eggplants. Many fruits can be kept in it for six months.

  • It will also preserve a dead body, and it is known as the trustworthy preserver.
  • If the body of one who is afflicted with lice is painted with honey, it will kill the lice and their eggs.
  • It makes the hair long, beautiful and smooth.
  • If used on the eyes like kohl it clears the vision.
  • If the teeth are brushed with it, it whitens the teeth and makes them bright, and keeps the gums healthy.
  • It opens the veins and induces menstruation.
  • If taken on an empty stomach it takes away phlegm and cleanses the stomach, clearing away waste matter and restoring the correct temperature. It does likewise to the liver, kidneys and urethra.

* As well as all this, it has no side effects and causes little harm.
  • It may cause side effects in one who is suffering from jaundice, but that may be counteracted by vinegar and the like, in which case it becomes very beneficial for him.

  • It is a kind of nourishment, a kind of medicine, a kind of drink, a kind of sweet, a kind of cream.
  • There is nothing that has been created for us for a similar purpose that is better than it, or even comes close.
  • The ancient peoples relied on it, and in most of the books of the ancients there is no mention of sugar at all and it was unknown to them, for it is something that is very new.
  • The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to drink honey mixed with water on an empty stomach, and this is the secret of maintaining good health that no one can understand except one who is intelligent and blessed.

While I have no doubt that honey has many beneficial properties I do question the validity of some of these assertions. Honey is not a "hot" food and jaundice is not a "hot" condition, these terms note a certain primitive belief system not based off medicine whatsoever. Jaundice means your liver isn't working or you have hemolytic anemia, both of which do not effect temperature of the body.

As far as taking honey for scorpion bites or eating poisonious mushrooms, that will do nothing for curing the person. They may even die if they do not get the antidote and depend on honey for helping or curing these poisons.

Brushing your teeth with it will not whiten them or help them. Honey is basically a natural sugar and the bacteria that live in your mouth thrive off sugar. Brushing your teeth with honey will hasten caries and cavities.

While I respect the sunnah of eating honey (I do it myself) I do not feel that it is a cure-all. I definitely think a scientist or doctor who has done serious research on it's properties should publish a paper. But the assertions from the above persons leads me to believe that they do not understand basic physiology or biochemistry. No offense, we should just make sure our sources are properly educated before we follow their advice.

I believe if you put your intention that it will work and believe it will work and then take it as a means of cure then it should work. not all honey we see is real 100% pure honey. so make sure its the 100% pure honey.

there are different types of honey. some i explain below from information online.

MANUKA HONEY

Manuka honey is a form of monofloral honey which is produced by bees which feed on the flowers of the manuka plant, better known as the tea tree in some regions of the world. A similar honey is made in Australia with bees which feed on the jellybush. According to studies which have been conducted on manuka honey, this honey has a few interesting properties.

The tea tree is known to be antibacterial and antifungal, and it is has been used for decades as a source of things like mouth washes and disinfectants. Manuka honey harnesses the properties of the tea tree, combining them with the already naturally antibacterial properties of honey. In addition to tasting good, manuka honey can also be used in wound dressing to prevent infection or fungal colonization, and some people believe that consuming it is also beneficial.

--------

sidr honey

there is Sidr honey which comes from the bees eatting off the Sidr Tree being an ancient tree.
To appreciate this highly revered honey, one has to understand the story behind its tree.
All of its parts have medicinal values. Its leaves are used as a herbal shampoo, to treat dandruff, head lice, swollen eyes, abscesses, furuncles and counter obesity. Mixed with warm water the leaves are used to clean the body since they are a disinfectant and the oil from the resin is deodorant. Its wood ash is used for the treatment of snakebites. Its fruits are found to have a very high energy value. Its seeds are rich in protein; its leaves rich in calcium, iron and magnesium. The root, stem bark are also used in various medicinal preparations. Other known medicinal uses include as a stomachic, an appetizer, an astringent and also as a cough medicine.

Inhabitant:
Sidr plant grows in coastal, desert, and semi-desert areas. It grows in India, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, Libya, Sudean, and the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula, The plant grows extensively in the eastern part of Yemen.

Health Benefits Of Honey

"And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colours, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect. (Surat an-Nahl, 68-69)

Honey is a sweet treat. In fact, it is man's oldest sweetener. It can be a good substitute for sugar in our drinks and food. But it is also good for many other things and treating many other conditions. Reliance on commercialized medicines which contains too much chemicals can become hazardous to our health. Alhamdullilah, Allah has given us the knowledge that Mother Nature can at least help to ease the pain we are suffering from.

Honey is composed of sugars like glucose and fructose and minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sodium chlorine, sulphur, iron and phosphate. It contains vitamins B1, B2, C, B6, B5 and B3 all of which change according to the qualities of the nectar and pollen. Besides the above, copper, iodine, and zinc exist in it in small quantities. Several kinds of hormones are also present in it.

Approximately one half of the human diet is derived directly or indirectly from crops pollinated by bees. Today honeybees are an essential part of a healthy agriculture economy. If you have allergies, honey can be beneficial. If you eat honey that is local to your area, it may prevent your seasonal allergies. Bees use the pollen from local plants and eventually it ends up in your honey.

Honey may also be good for your skin. It has the ability to attract water. You can use honey instead of alpha hydroxy masks because of its high content of the acid. It is also safe for sensitive skin.

You can also use it as a moisturizing mask for your skin as well as your hair. To use it as a conditioner, mix the honey with olive oil. Be sure to wash your hair thoroughly before you go outside.

If you have a sore throat, take some honey.Due to its natural anti-inflammatory effect, it will help to heal the wounds more quickly. It also has different phytochemicals--chemicals found in plants and different foods--that kill viruses, bacteria, and fungus making it a good substitute for wound dressings. The taste may also take your mind off the pain.

There is evidence that honey diluted in water will help with your stomachaches and dehydration.

Germ-Fighting Properties

Do you have a cut? Honey is a natural antiseptic. Medical journals cite more than 600 cases in which honey was employed to treat wounds.By applying honey to your wounds, you prevent infections. Honey contains antimicrobial agents, which prevents infections by killing the bacteria in and around your wounds. When using honey it may help to heat it up before putting it on your wound (caution test the heat before you place it on the wound). Many types of bacteria can’t survive in honey, so wounds heal, swelling eases, and tissue can grow back.

Honey may also be effective in the treatment of your ulcers. In Europe, honey has been used internally to help cure ulcers, particularly stomach ulcers.

Burns, too, heal better with honey, studies show. The advantage of honey is that it not only prevents infections from occurring, it actually accelerates skin healing.. Since the sugar in honey absorbs water it helps to trap some of the moisture so that the bacteria and other microbes can’t grow as easily as in other food.

How Does It Help In Healing Wounds?

When honey comes into contact with body moisture, the glucose oxidase enzyme introduced to the honey by the bee slowly releases the antiseptic hydrogen peroxide at a sufficient level to be effective against bacteria but not tissue damaging. Not only is honey anti-bacterial, it also draws body fluids and nutrients to the area and so assists cell growth and prevents a scar forming by drying out of the wound.

The osmotic action of the honey draws out and provides a film of liquid between the tissues and the dressing, allowing the dressing to be removed painlessly, without tearing of the re-growing cells. There are reports in medical journals of large bed sores, otherwise needing skin grafts, that have healed without scarring after honey treatment.

In treating diarrhea, honey promotes the rehydration of the body and more quickly clears up the diarrhea and any vomiting and stomach upsets. The anti-bacterial properties of honey, both the peroxide and non-peroxide, are effective in the laboratory against MRSA strains of bacteria which are notoriously resistant to antibiotics and are sometimes responsible for the closing of hospital wards.

Other Benefits of Honey

Easily digested: Because sugar molecules in honey can convert into other sugars (e.g. fructose to glucose), honey is easily digested by the most sensitive stomachs, despite its high acid content. It helps kidneys and intestines to function better.

Good source of antioxidants: It plays a big role in the prevention of cancer as well as heart disease.

Has a low calorie level: Another quality of honey is that, when it is compared with the same amount of sugar, it gives 40% less calories to the body. Although it gives great energy to the body, it does not add weight.

Rapidly diffuses through the blood: When accompanied by mild water, honey diffuses into the bloodstream in 7 minutes. Its free sugar molecules make the brain function better since the brain is the largest consumer of sugar, thus, reduces fatigue.

Supports blood formation: Honey provides an important part of the energy needed by the body for blood formation. In addition, it helps in cleansing the blood. It has some positive effects in regulating and facilitating blood circulation. It also functions as a protection against capillary problems and arteriosclerosis.

Does not accommodate bacteria: This bactericide (bacteria-killing) property of honey is named "the inhibition effect". Experiments conducted on honey show that its bactericide properties increase twofold when diluted with water. It is very interesting to note that newly born bees in the colony are nourished with diluted honey by the bees responsible for their supervision - as if they know this feature of the honey.

Royal Jelly: Royal jelly is a substance produced by worker bees inside the beehive. Inside this nutritious substance are sugar, proteins, fats and many vitamins. It is used in problems caused by tissue deficiency or body frailty.

It is obvious that honey, which is produced in much higher amounts than the requirements of the bees, is made for the benefit of man. And it is also obvious that bees cannot perform such an unbelievable task "on their own."

This was my research i found on honey. i find it to be such an important topic and i thank brother Abu Talib for his post. inshallah you will be rewarded because i learnt so much and it lead to me to research more and learn more. Thank you. i love learning. it makes me excited to find out what the little things created have as purpose and helps me to appreciate Allahs creation to that specific subject i learnt.

yes your right, this is more information:

Honey is the only known dietary reservoir of C. botulinum spores linked to infant botulism. For this reason honey should not be fed to infants less than one year of age. Due to the success of this public health message, fewer than 5% of recent infant botulism cases have been exposed to honey.[citation needed] The remaining 95% of infant botulism cases are thought to have acquired the spores from the natural environment. Clostridium botulinum is a ubiquitous soil-dwelling bacterium, and is found in soils throughout the US. Many infant botulism patients have been demonstrated to live near a construction site or an area of soil disturbance.

inshallah Botulism is not something serious in relation to being an affect in honey. but its still there like you said.

In relation to Jaundice - here is some information regarding safe of honey to use in this illness. but not sure much about the hot in Jaundice.

Jaundice is a condition that affects the liver.
a person suffering from Jaundice is unable to eliminate toxins from the body and these toxins accumulate in the body. This leads to person looking yellow. although there are a variety of anti biotic medicines available to fight jaudice most people prefer to use natural and holistic remedies to treat the condition. some of the symptoms of jaundice include nausea, high fever, cough and cold, dizziness, fatigue and weakness.

the anti biotic medicines worsen the situation and thus people prefer to do home remedies. fortunately there are several home and herbal remedies that help us to control this condition.

eg: Grind papaya leaves and form a paste. mix a spoon of the paste with 2 spoons of honey and have this 3 to 4 times a day. the blend of the leaves and the anti inflammatory property of the honey will fight the jaundice and eliminate it from the body.

some symptoms of Jaundice is:
The nose, month, and breath are hot and dry and i know that they usually get very red flashes on their checks which irritates and hurts them and i this the flashes are on babies when they have Jaundice. but thats the only hot symptoms i know. so i dont know of anything else that is hot in Jaundice but honey still helps. i hope my information will help understand honey in Jaundice.

in relation to scorpion bits, lol, that does seem silly, mmm, how can honey help, yep you can die from it. but i found this:

If a snake or scorpion bites apply garlic paste and lick 2 tsp of garlic juice mixed with honey for immediate relief and to destroy its poisonous effect.

plus, visit this link. the above recipe is at the end of the link when you read it. i found this link a bit silly but when i looked up further on the internet, i found it was actually possible to be true. lol.

http://www.panjokutch.com/Health/general/insect%20bite.htm

-----------

as for honey to whiten teeth, lol, that does sound funny ah, your right how does it work. well there are different types of honey and honey recipes to help make a specific cure. this is to whiten teeth on this link:

http://www.ehow.com/how_4787904_naturally-whiten-teeth-honey.html

when i finish with my bracers i want to give it a try. lol.

i hope this information helps. honey is very special. it will work with specific recipes or even on its own. but you have to have the right honey for that cure. it was fun researching. i actually did it to see if its true and i found my result. so i thought i should kindly share it with you.

its hard to believe subhan allah what honey can do. sometimes its ability sounds funny and silly and unreal. i had to research to find if its actually real. i did more than one research and non came negative. so its true inshallah. bees, mashallah, they are so smart. research about bees, and you'll start to believe that honey is actually as real as these teaches and doctors etc say it is.

I am not sure where you're getting your information about what jaundice is and it's pathology but it is incorect. Jaundice is a sign that your liver is failing, usually due to alcoholism or a hepatitis infection such as a virus. Antibiotics would be completely useless and it is not what doctors use to treat it. Honey would be akin to using a bandaid to cover an amputation. Jaundice is a sign of a disease and not the disease itself. It like seeing inflammation and knowing there is an infection...you don't say the inflammation is the disease.

And the curative properties have nothing to do with faith or intention. If you stick your hand in a fire it will burn, intention or not. Honey does have some medicinal properties and faith or intention is not needed for it to work.

I truly believe that honey is good for certain things but using it as a "homeopathic" remedy for jaundice is definitely not one of them. If one takes honey as a home cure for jaundice then they will most likely die since it will not ameliorate the underlying illness. There are no "hot flashes" in breath or skin, jaundice literally means the skin, eyes and mucus membranes are turning yellow due to a build up of bilirubin in the body. Honey cannot remove bilirubin, only the liver can do such a thing. And when the liver starts to fail then we see the result, jaundice. Jaudice in babies is usually due to hemolysis or because their liver is still trying to catch up and work on it's own. Phototherapy and hydration are the only treatment in this case.

I am not trying to refute the Quran on the ayah, but rather the assertion that honey is some sort of "cure all" which is being made by someone who lacks medical knowledge. Honey is basically a natural sugar and should be respected for what it can do, not pushed as something more than it is.

Sister,

In order to understand the "hot" humors of the body (as they were known in the days of early medicine)....you have to understand the early historical thinking about how the body functioned. I plan on checking it out, since I am in the medical field and also because I study the Native American ways of healing by natural herbs, plants, and trees.

As for the healing properties of Honey, it has EXCELLECT anti-microbial, anti-bacterial properties. It seals out air, so I'm interested in how it can be used to store meat. I do know that there is a techniqe of dry storing meat where after a few months, you cut off the outer layer and eat use the inner...I just can't remember the name right now.

I certainly wouldn't use it on my eyes....also, I wouldn't use it for jaundice because sugar is processed with insulin which comes from the liver...which, if your liver is not filtering your blood correctly, thus leaving dead blood cells in the body, I wouldn't want to stress it out further.

I'll get back to you about all the medical data though...I've just been really busy today.

Jaundice is a sign that your liver is failing, usually due to alcoholism or a hepatitis infection such as a virus.

Sister,

You are partially correct. There are 3 types of Jaundice:

Pre-hepatic-The pathology is occurring prior to the liver.

Hepatic-The pathology is located within the liver.

Post Hepatic-The pathology is located after the conjugation of bilirubin in the liver.

Hepatic Jaundice is caused by alcohlism and hepititis
Pre-hepetic is caused by anemia due to maylaria
Post Hepetic is cause by a blockage preventing the bile from draining...it's also known as an "obstructive jaundice"..

So it's not allllways saying the the liver is failing, but it IS saying that something is very wrong and it CAN kill you.

Neonatal jaundice however is usually harmless and the most common treatment, besides waiting it out, is the use of a Bili light.

I am familiar with the post vs pre vs hepatic jaundice, I am steadily studying for my licensing exam. :) I just wanted to keep it simple for the non-medically versed folks. I also know why the use of "hot" was used, it was from when people believed "humors" caused illness and lacked knowledge of microbial disease.

BTW, insulin is made by the pancreas, not the liver. I made that same mistake when learning about the glucose-insulin interaction in the biochemical physiology.

Anyways, I am all for homeopathic remedies but I use caution when using them. For some reason there are people who think "natural" means "safe" when in fact some of the natural things are the most toxic. As someone pointed out earlier, the botulism toxoid can kill an infant, sadly by paralysing their respiratory muscles. :( I just try to find a happy medium between allopathic and homeoptahic medicine, it cna be done but it can be tricky as well.
