why up to 4 wives?

One of my good friends keeps on asking me why did Allah (swt) set the limit to 4 wives why not 3 ,or 5 or 6 and so on.

I keep telling that this knowledge is not beneficial and we might not know the hikmah behind it, but the person is insisting again n again so im posting this Question here if anyone has more knowledge on this matter

i found these answers:

Allah swt the creator of Mankind knows what the limits of his creation are.
People before islam used to marry 10 or more women... so Allah swt restricted it to a max of 4 IF he can be just with them. Otherwise only 1.

Islam is what brought back women's rights, and justice.

ie; Allah swt knows the limits of Man better than us.

in the Muslim countries its becoming a major problem that there are sooo many women over thirty that are unmarried and single.

the Qur'an permits but does not command a man to have four wives

my personal points

- to prevent haram intercourse outside marriage - so no one does zina
- to increase Islam
- I heard there is more ladies then men, so if every man was to have one lady there will be lots of ladies without a man.
- Allah knows our limits

JazakAllah khair for the answers, but the person know the detail why more than 1 is good for men in islam but the Question is more like WHY the number 4 , why not 5 or some other number?
is there a answer to that?

I agree Salaah is a good thing.. but why ALLAH AZZAWAJAL made ONLY 2 UNITS for Fajr???????????????????

I agree that fasting is a good thing, but why ALLAH AZZAWAJAL made ONLY the month of Ramadaan sooo sacred??? why not others????

I know having sight is a blessing, why dont we have 3, 4 or 5 eyes?????????????

Dear friend, I agree that our tongue is a Rahmah.. but why HE created only ONE per a person.. why not 2, so that we could have had more Islamic lectures...

This is Something we were not told why? But islam did come to put a limit since before islam people had no number. They could have thousands, hundreds etc so 4 compared to that is nothing. Most of them were not treated justly. It is impossible to have so many and treat them fairly. That is why Allah significantly lover the number to 4. But he lowered it even to 1 incase we fear that they will not be treated fairly. Allah in His wisdom even knows that having just more than one will be hard to treat fairly. Allah knows best the wisdom behind it.

And if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphan-girls, then marry (other) women of your choice, two or three, or four but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one or (the captives and the slaves) that your right hands possess. That is nearer to prevent you from doing injustice. (An Nisa 4:3)

This is a Qur’aanic text which shows that plural marriage is allowed. According to Islamic sharee’ah, a man is permitted to marry one, two, three or four wives, in the sense that he may have this number of wives at one time. It is not permissible for him to have more than four. This was stated by the mufassireen (commentators on the Qur’aan) and fuqaha’ (jurists), and there is consensus among the Muslims on this point, with no differing opinions.

maybe Allah did not want odd numbers of wives for men like 3, 5, 7 and so 2 would be too low and 6 would be too high so 4 is enough. maybe Allah Alam.
