Oh sister, where would I start in answering this question?! I have had too many slip-ups to name! Subhanallah, we can laugh and learn :)

I'll start with one from my mum, from back before I reverted...My mum, she's respectful of Islam and of other people's beliefs, but she just knows little about those but her own, y'know? Anyway, one day I introduced her to a Muslim friend of mine, and my mum was like "Hey Mohammed, come in...settle down...would you like a beer?". I couldn't have been more embarrassed if I'd tried, but alhamdulillah she's my mother and I love her, and luckily the brother saw the funny side!

Another one, I was in Abu Dhabi last autumn, and I was driving an automatic-geared, left-hand-drive car for the first time, which led to mass confusion...I passed a bunch of worshippers heading to the nearby mosque, prayer mats tucked under their arms, as adhan was calling right at that moment. So I was like OK, drive slowly, pass respectfully..which I did. However, it started to rain, it rained in Abu Dhabi for the first time in like forever, which just happened to be during my first trip there! So I had to switch on the window wipers in this confusing car, but accidentally hit the horn, making it sound loud and long...not once, but twice!

Also in UAE, on another occasion, I noticed that my hotel toilet (and every other toilet I'd encountered thus far in UAE) had a hose attached to the side of it, and a nozzle on the end out of which water sprays. I was like woooooooooow to my friends, come and see this, it's a foot cleaner or something! Through their laughter, they managed to explain that it's used to clean yourself properly after using the bathroom! This was after I'd sprayed the thing all around the place like a kid with a water gun!

To Raed,
i Think the first thing after u enter the toilet is to find a hose or a pipe. If there is no pipe or hose....wet a tissue and use it to clean yourself... :SMILY288:

To KhalidalAsadullah

We all are learning muslim, right...And the best way to learn is to learn from mistakes... Well if the 2 girls know what u did is wrong, That is very embarassing ....lol :SMILY288:

I did the yawning thing too, until a Muslim friend told me about it.

I'm sure I've made a lot of mistakes but at first it was hard to remember things I already knew. Like almost eating a ham sandwich or almost hugging a male friend.

This thread is really funny .

I was not aware of shorting of prayer in travel. One day a friend told me that u can shortened ur prayer when u r not in the city.I asked him ,how do u do that.He give me a little idea about that but i learn it from a book about Salaat.

Now i did learn it but i got a weak memory ,i mix up things.

So i travel latter on in my life n well i ended up in a Mosque offering Mughrib prayers with Jamat /congregation.I was sure about the prayers with 4 Rakaat/units prayer. But i was confused about the Maghrib prayer which has 3 Rakaats.

Now it completely slip out of mind that i was in a state of journey n i,m not at my own city.

During the first Rakaat i remember that i was a traveler .Now i was more confuse than ever since i was already part of the Jamat,There r peoples all around me in state of prayer.I can not move back since the Mosque was full with peoples.

I did try my best to remember but no avial.

I decided that well i,m a traveler there obligation does not apply to me.Lol in the 2nd rakaat after tashud i remained in that position while the whole Jamat stand up for the third rakaat.I continue my Salaat/prayer like i was alone n i ended my salaat.Lol as soon the jammat was over. the guy next to me was looking at me with true amazement on his face.He asked me why didnt u complete prayers with us.

I told him my reasons but he was confuse like me n he agreed with my reasoning.

Latter on another friend of mine did the same thing in Mughrab prayer while he was on a journey but he was lucky.Peoples around him have more knowledge .They teach him how to perform it n he then teach it to me.

I hope that was funny for u guys but for me it still make me smile.:SMILY105:

Imam at New York!

Asslamo Allaikum,

We were travelling through New York & decided to stop for Zoh'r Prayer at a Mosque.

Imam started the prayer, went in Ruku, Phone rang

He picked it up as the Phone was next to him (for some reason) and said, "We are praying can you call back in 5 minutes"

Continued praying...

After prayers one of the brothers tried to tell me that he didn't think his actions were correct...

He answered, "I take my Deen from the Authetic Sunnah & not from Pakistanees...There is a Saheeh Hadeeth that talks about it being permissable to speak during Salah, Phone rang so I spoke; what's the problem?"

Brother said, I am NOT Pakistani; I am Kuwaiti and what you did was incorrect...

He said, "OK...won't do it again" and repeated the prayer!

After that the brother told the Imam that he was born in Kuwait of Pakistani Parents!

Imam looked at us like he was gonna eat us alive; we thought it was best to leave!

AssalaamuAlaikum,

I have never imagined this can also happen. And I really enjoy the situation when you told the Imam at the end that the brother is actually Pakistani.

But what was the sudden reaction of all brothers when Imam started recieving call and started talking? It was like a joke to me and people must have laughed in prayer too. How about that?

Harem of Women, Lashings etc. (Islamic)???

Asslamo Allaikum,

Imam was a revert & was probably told NOT to follow Pakistanees.

Everyone else in the Mosque thought of the Imam as the most knowledgable person so didn't question it...

New York is a strange place; you have people with Harems of women and poeple justify them to be Islamic (from the Qur;'aan and Sunnah)

An African-American revert sister came to our Mosque in California & she told us how she was a slave girl to Shaykh (can't remember the name) and served him for some time! She actually thought that she was following the Sunnah all that time!

She also told us she was also told by the Shaykh to serve other guests; which she did as she thought that was her Islamic duty!

You have Brothers in New York who lash others because of committing fornication (imparting Justice)...

My revert room-mate went to one of these places & got lashed because he slept with a girl; I wasn't practising at the time so didn't really bother me...

He actually thought of this as part of his repentence towards Allah (SWT)...

You have all sorts of wacky sects and beleives; trust me!

You also have people who turn to another dierction to face Qiblah (called Habashees or something)!

You have wacked out people in Europe brother...Silly stupid customs in the garb of Islam; you meet some reverts and born Muslims which are off the wall man and think that they are following the Sunnah...

Well, my specific point was about a person who is Imam with so much less knowledge.

I think I just forgot all the bigger picture. This is the same city where Ameena Wadood with a bunch of wackos did her prayer drama. I can undersatnd. I also forgot about the Muslims in china who have very poor access to the right knowledge of Islam. There are chinese Muslims who have alcohol/wine as a basic part of their life. There are chines Muslims who used to eat Pork. And there is such one chinese girl around me also who does not eat pork because her parents do not eat it too but she drinks wine/bear because her parents drink. She knows very little about Islam and I tried to invite her to learn but could not get a good any sign of motivation. |'_*|

A while back when I was in Jeddah, I set off the fire alarm system in a hospital toilet. I was visiting a sick relative and it really wasn't my fault seeing as the fire alarm was located directly above the toilet flush. It was pracitcally inevitable! I was bissfully unaware of the a panic outisde. The doors must have been sound proof or something as I didn't hear a single thing. A couple minutes later, I had a angry Fillipino nurse banging on the door and I got a real telling off by the nurses and my parents.

Due to lack of knowledge Bosnian & Albanian Muslims also drink Alcohol (particularly on Eid) & eat Pork.

Let's do our best to inform Muslims, Insha'Allah.

I still havn't had a chance to visit China yet; how common is it for people to understand English there?

A lot of Turks drink alcohol, too, especially in holiday resorts in the south and west (I haven't been to Istanbul, Ankara, etc, so I don't know). Although I think this is less to do with lack of knowledge and probably more to do with their East-meets-West geographical position, being surrounded by Europeans half of the year, and just getting caught up in the whole sun, sea and umm sand lifestyle.

I was in Turkey a few years back with my Muslim boyfriend (I was not a Muslim at the time), and often we'd fall into conversation with Turks working in the holiday resort...more often than not with a can of beer in their hand!

Anyway, when it came about in conversation that my boyfriend was Muslim (he doesn't "look" Muslim*, he is a VERY light-skinned Arab, often mistaken for European...or Israeli!), these guys would be like "Oh, astaghfirallah, I don't usually drink, etc. etc.". It was funny in a way but sad in another...sad that they only attempted to conceal their drinking habits around Muslim foreigners, but not non-Muslim or foreigners, or their fellow Turks.

[*PS, I do realise that a Muslim can't be spotted on skin-colour alone, but I'm sure you guys resident in the "West" will probably know what I mean]
