Koran Burned in Iran (video)

Abu Talib

Feeling low
Two anonymous young men in Iran, one Iranian and one Afghan, have burned a Koran in protest. This seven-and-a-half minute long video shows the two men, their faces obscured, holding the Muslim holy book and reading prepared statements. They say that Arabs have foisted this book and their homelands and because of it they have gone backwards for 1400 years. They say they dislike the Koran and want it to disappear, adding "Viva freedom!"

Afterwards they stand the Koran on a flat rock, douse it alcohol and light it. One of them hoots and laughs. The book burns fiercely, and after a few moments one of them sprays more alcohol into the flames. The video ends with them warming their hands over the blazing book.

Yeah, I've met two Iranians at my university this year that are quite anti-Islam. However, one is zoroastrian and the other is an atheist and they both hate their Shia Islamic government. They talk a lot about Iranian nationalism and ancient Persian culture, and how their current government has taken away the freedom from their people.

So the question will go down to this for many on the forum..who do you despise more? People like these two (in the article) burning the Quran, or the government they are protesting against?

Assalam alaikum.

May Allah guide them but if they do not accept the guidance, May Allah destroy them and burn them in the fierce fires of Hell.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote.

The people I mentioned are not Muslim. One is an atheist and the other is Zoroastrian. And they hate Ahmadinejad, and their government that runs the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In high school, I knew a girl from Iran, but she was Baha'i. We talked from time to time. Her mother was Baha'i and her father was Muslim. She invited me to Baha'i studies and I thought about it but was more interested in learning about Islam (this was before I was Muslim btw). She told me that she believes in Moses (pbuh), Jesus (pbuh), Buddha, Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and every other religious scripture, etc. :girl3:

This hatred has historical roots.

The Persians have always been an immensely proud people. They've had a rich history of culture and conquest. However, after they accepted Islam and joined the Muslim armies in conquest, there was injustice done to them as to other non-Arab nations. After the Khulafa ar-Rashidun many agree that the rest couldn't hold a candle to the first four to the point where corruption and greed made its way in. As a result, many of the caliphs were Ummayyad Arabs who actually imposed the jizyah on non-Arab Muslims! This was infuriating to other Muslims as they were all part of one Ummah and would help in dawah and conquest. However, the greater amount of spoils would be taken by the Arabs and the non-Arabs wouldn't be left with much. They woud do just as much work as the Arabs (if not more in my opinion) and be rewarded with less resources and the imposition of jizyah.

Read your Islamic history if you don't believe me. This also actually helped perpetuate the birth of Shi'ism as a formal religion. The Persians were fed up the most and decided to "break free" and branch out. This also led to them being mainly involved in the later Abbassid movement as well. If anyone wants me to, I'll find the actual resource and post it up later (I'm at work right now).

Basically, this hatred has always existed. Against Arabs. Against Ummayads and Islam because it was the Ummayad Arabs that brought Islam to them and when one has an enemy that they abhor, they learn to hate anything associated to that enemy even if it's flawless.

This hatred against Islam was also further fueled by the Shah prior to the 1979 Revolution. As a way of sticking it to the Ayatollah and Islamic parties that wanted to take over, he stated that they had much more to lose with Islam in power and this included their cultural pride. Persia is one of the few countries in the world that has never been conquered by a foreign power and has so impressive a history to rival the Romans and Byzantines. But when that foreign power takes the shape of a powerful religion they see it as an invader and an enemy. Anything that threatens their status of being on top. Islamically, they don't feel they can regain their old glory.

This is basically national pride talking.
