Jews and Christians who died before the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him lived can they go to Heaven or to Pradise/Jannah ?

Will Christians and Jews be admitted to heaven? – A contradiction?

Many critics try and try to find faults in the Qur'an but they repeatedly fail. Most of the so-called contradictions are nothing but misunderstanding. When reading the Qur'an one must understand the basic Islam beliefs, gathered from the Qur'an, the most basic being the Pillars of Faith and the Pillars of Practice.

Pillars of Faith/Belief

1. One True God

2. Angels

3. The Books Allah has revealed, not the man made lies.

4. Prophets

5. The Afterlife

6. Devine Decree and Destiny

Now, some missionaries try to say “Bible is God’s Word and it was revealed from Him and Muslims need to obey it because it is required by the Qur'an!” This has been addressed here: http://www.answering-christianity.com/mucahit_sivri/quran_and_gospel.htm and many other sites and articles. I think it’s quite funny for the missionaries to claim such things.

Anyways, the actual verse that is in question is:

The Holy Qur'an 2:62 – Translation by Yusuf Ali

Those who believe (in the Qur’an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,- any who believe in God and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord; on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

The Holy Qur'an 5:69 – Translation by Yusuf Ali

Those who believe (in the Qur’an), those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians and the Christians,- any who believe in God and the Last Day, and work righteousness,- on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

And the critic gives this verse as well:

The Holy Qur'an 21:94 – Translation by Yusuf Ali

Whoever works any act of righteousness and has faith,- His endeavour will not be rejected: We shall record it in his favour.

I will first talk about verse 21:94. Notice the verse says: “act of righteousness and has faith”, his translation is far better in this verse because it says “believer” and this choice of word explains the situation much, much better. To have faith in Allah and to submit to His will means you have to believe all the revelation He has sent, all the prophets He has sent, the angles and the after life-Check the Pillars of Faith/Belief for more. Now that this verse is cleared lets move on to the critic’s next claim:

The critic claims that the Qur'an places Jews and Christians in this category. This is an interesting statement. He gives these verses(his points are bolded):

Let’s ignore the “(in the Qur’an)” because that is the translator’s interpretation of the verse. We have already established who the believers are and who aren’t.

To understand the rest of these verses we must say, “Is Allah talking of the True Christians that existed in the time of Jesus(pbuh) and the True Jews who existed in the time of Moses(pbuh)?”

To answer this question, lets see what the Qur'an thinks of today’s Bible:

The Holy Qur'an 2:77-79 – Translation by Yusuf Ali

Know they not Allah Knoweth what they conceal and what they reveal? And there are among them illiterates, who know not the Book but (see therein their own) desires, and they do nothing but conjecture. Then woe to those who write the Book with their own hands, and then say: 'This is from Allah,' to traffic with it for a miserable price! Woe to them for what their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby.

The Holy Qur'an 5:13 – Translation by Yusuf Ali

But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent to them, nor wilt thou cease to find them- barring a few - ever bent on (new) deceits: but forgive them, and overlook (their misdeeds): for God loveth those who are kind.

Allah claims that today’s Bible is corrupted! For more proof visit here: http://www.answering-christianity.com/mucahit_sivri/quran_and_gospel.htm

Now let us look at the above verses again:

“those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians” 2:62

“those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Sabians and the Christians” 5:69

We can surely eliminate the “Jewish (scriptures)” part as I’ve proven above that the Bible of today is not considered to be sent by Allah in the Qur’an but what about the “Sabians and the Christians”?

Again, we must see what Allah thinks of “true” Christians. I can easily eliminate those who believe today’s Bible, as they do not believe Allah’s True Word but there are other ways.

Most of today’s Christians believe in the Trinity or the divinity of Jesus(pbuh). Let’s see what the Qur'an says:

The Holy Qur'an 4:171 – Translation by Yusuf Ali

O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of God aught but the truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an apostle of God, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in God and His apostles. Say not "Trinity”: desist: it will be better for you: for God is one God: Glory be to Him: (far exalted is He) above having a son. To Him belong all things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs.

It is obvious from here that Allah does not consider today’s Trinitarian Christians to be the real followers of Jesus and Allah [1].

But what about the non-trinity Christianity? The answer is quite simple, and I will repeat myself again, who ever believes the corrupted Bible of today, rather then Allah’s word(be the Injil or the Torah), they are not considered believers or True Christians or True Jews.

In Conclusion

The verse is invalid today because the Qur'an does not consider any of the Christians or Jews to be the Jew and Christians who Allah has sent His True Word!

Besides, the verse indicates that those who have died before Islam, as believers, will be judged accordingly. Since Islam is here and it is the only acceptable religion by Allah, the “True” Christians and Jews would convert to Islam, otherwise they are going against the word of Allah and His prophets and His revelations.

And Allah knows best!

Footnote:

1. Some translations say “one in Three”, but it means the same thing as Trinity. The Father in the Bible is considered to be God by Muslims, or at least the closest being to God in the Bible, depending on who you ask.

:salam2: I think that a Christian or jew that is icolated from the muslim community or no messenger came to give them islam will go to heaven. Or they could be like my Christian friends who become teary eyed when they hear versus from the quran and consider muslims there closest brothers.

NOTE. All of my Christian friends i described above believe that the virgen Mary was given a son through the POWERS of God. not that he is the literal son of god or god.

please understand this:
Islam was the religion of EVERY of the approx 124 000 prophets sent to mankind from Adam(AS) to Muhammad(SAW).

with respect to Jews & Christians- these peole would all be regarded as muslims IF they accepted, believed & practiced upon the teachings of Musa & Isa(Alayhimus Salaam).
what has happened after Musa (AS) passed away is that his followers altered the Tauraat/Torah & these same jews are responsible for the compilation of the highly altered version of the Injeel/Bible that exists today.
there is no copy of the actual Tauraat/Torah or the Injeel/Bible.
so, this means that all Jews & Christians now have a religion that is NOT what their respective prophets preached/propogated.
IF their books were still true & unaltered, then those that were sincere & true would have accepted Islam by following the teachings of their OWN divine books.

Alhamdulillah, the Quran is protected against any tampering/altering by Allah ta'ala himself.

today, those Jews & Christians that are true & really want to follow the teachings of their respective divine books, as they currently exist, are in a big problem as they are believing in/following mostly man-made laws etc.

the best, i would think, is to make duaah for them and advise/encourage them to read the Quran & to keep in contact with good scholars who would be able to answers their questions about Islam.

those Jews & Christians who died before Rasullullah (SAW) received nabuwwah/prophethood- Allah ta'ala will judge them
as he will for all of us.

and Allah ta'ala knows best

:salam2: I ran across this on Islamqa.com and remembered this thread.

Who are the Jews and Christians who will enter Paradise?
ar - en - fr - ur

For the time being, I do not have the resources to quote the exact Quranic verse, nor can I tell you what sura it has been taken from. However, I believe it is a common verse. I understand little Arabic; hence I found that in English. The verse can be interpretted as such:
The godfearing Jews, muslims and christians will not have fear (on that day). I am not exactly sure of the bracketted phrase.
Now my question to you: is it mistranliteration? We know that christians and jews in general cannot be hoped to have any sanction in the life hereafter. So, how do we understand the verse?

Praise be to Allaah.

What you refer to in your question is mentioned in two similar aayaat in the Qur’aan. The first of them is the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, those who believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [al-Baqarah 2:62]

The second is the aayah (interpretation of the meaning): “Surely, those who believe, those who are the Jews and the Sabians and the Christians – whosoever believed in Allaah and the Last Day, and worked righteousness, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” [al-Maa’idah 5:69]

In order to understand these aayaat correctly, we need to refer to the scholars of Tafseer (Qur’aanic commentary). The great Imaam Ismaa’eel ibn Katheer, may Allaah have mercy on him, said in his tafseer of the aayah from Soorat al-Baqarah:

“Allaah, may He be exalted, points out that whoever of the previous nations did well and was obedient, will have a good reward, and this will be the case for everyone who follows the Unlettered Prophet [Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) until the Hour comes – he will have eternal happiness, and they will not fear what they are going to face, nor will they grieve for what they have left behind. As Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ‘No doubt! Verily, the awliya’ of Allaah [i.e., those who believe in the Oneness of Allaah and fear Allaah much, and love Allaah much], no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve.’ [Yoonus 10:62]. And Allaah tells us what the angels say to the believers at the time of death (interpretation of the meaning): ‘Verily, those who say, “Our Lord is Allaah,” then they istaqaamu [stood straight, i.e., truly followed Islam], on them the angels will descend (at the time of their death) (saying): “Fear not, nor grieve! But receive the glad tidings of Paradise which you have been promised!”’ [Fussilat 41:30]

As far as the Jews are concerning, their faith meant believing in the Tawraat (original Torah) and following the way of Moosa (peace be upon him) until ‘Eesa came, after which whoever continued to follow the Torah and the way of Moosa, and did not leave this and follow ‘Eesa, was doomed. As far as the Christians are concerned, their faith meant believing in the Injeel (original Gospel) and following the laws of ‘Eesa; whoever did this was a believer whose faith was acceptable to Allaah, until Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came, after which whoever did not follow Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and leave the way of ‘Eesa and the Injeel that he had been following before, was doomed.

The aayah (interpretation of the meaning), “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:85] is a statement that Allaah will not accept any way or deed from anyone, after sending His Final Messenger, except those that are in accordance with the laws of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Prior to this, however, anyone who followed the Prophet of his own time was on the Straight Path of salvation. So the Jews were those who followed Moosa (peace be upon him) and referred to the Tawraat for judgement at that time. When Allaah sent ‘Eesa (peace be upon him), the Children of Israel were obliged to follow him and obey him, and so they and others who followed him became Christians.. When Allaah sent Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as the Final Prophet and a Messenger to all the children of Adam, all of mankind was obliged to believe in him and obey him, and refrain from what he prohibited. Those who did so are the true believers. The ummah (nation) of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) are called the believers because of their deep eemaan (faith) and conviction, and because they believe in all the past Prophets and in the prophesied events that are yet to come.”

Commenting on the aayah in Soorat al-Baqarah, Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

“What is meant is that every group believed in Allaah and the Last Day, which is the appointed Day of Reckoning, and did righteous deeds. But after Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was sent to both mankind and the jinn, true belief can only be in accordance with the way of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). Whoever follows his way will not fear the future or grieve for what they leave behind.

Mirajmom
Assalaam walaikum,

Lets do a little homework.

Find the hadeeth about the Miraj of the Prophet, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, what did Moses say to him about the number of people he will lead into Paradise.

Does it not say in the Holy Quran..Allah will decide what to do with all nations as to where He will send them.
