How to Purify Self When Touched By Dry Pigskin?

Assalammualaikum everyone ...

Two days ago, one of my worst fears was realized. I have remnants of serious OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) for cleanliness matters (purity) ... although, Alhamdulillah, it's cured immensely. However I never expected, after a looooong period of healing, that I would be tested with something that would shake my fragile OCD leftovers.

I recently found out that Centrum Multivitamin A-Z is not halal; some of its ingredients include pigskin. I was very shocked, seeing that I had accidentally left one of my tablets in my pockets and washed the clothes later. When I found out the news, I stopped taking the vitamins but realized that I had wetted the tablet, therefore making it the najis that requires the purifying process (1 time(s) earth mixed with water + 6 times water). I was absolutely helpless seeing that I had practically put a HUGE load (almost all my stock of uni clothes) for wash, therefore rendering all the clothes najis.

I have a horrible problem here. They say that if you touch a pig when dry, you don't become impure - touch it when either you or the pig is wet, and now you're impure. According to the Shafie madhab, you have to use the purifying method with earth. Others are saying a thorough wash will do.

I always pick the strongest opinion and therefore don't stick so stringently to one madhab, but of course, in my country, Shafie is the one which people adhere to. And they say, touch a pig, purify yourself with the earth+water method.

I follow the Qur'an and sunnah, period - that's for sure.

Also, I've collected the clothes from the wash, and some powder (from the dissolved Centrum tablet) has sprinkled the floor in masses. I'm also in a situation where it's impossible to get some earth just like that (I'm a hostelite in a university). I also have a room mate who's very particular about cleanliness and will flip out if I start washing the floor with earth. To me, everything's DIRTY and I'm simply miserable and in need of help. :'((( My OCD is coming back in a wild swing and its very frustrating since it took years to rub off. I'm just not moving much anywhere and am being in my room cause I'm scared that I'll make a wrong step again and there's more powder flung about from the clothes.

Can someone please, please, please advise me on this issue?
2)Please tell me whether I should find some earth and wash the ground and the clothes with the earth+water method or merely wash the clothes with water thoroughly and leave the ground as it is, after sweeping? A very strong opinion is needed right now, with good reasons and links from respectable scholars. Please.

b)Also, what does the majority say on the issue of touching pigs? In case I was wrong about Shafie', then what is the true opinion?

May Allah Bless whoever takes notice and helps, and I pray that Allah will Help that person in his/her time of need. Please answer ASAP. Thanks very, very much in advance.

Sister, the two fatwas you quoted from IslamQA has the answer to your questions, i.e. wash the clothes. From the way you typed, I can tell you are panicking over this. It's fine don't worry. You've always got the washing machine.

Brother, thank you very much for giving such a quick response. I'm relieved somebody answered. I am panicking very much and as a result, I have not eaten my lunch because I'm scared of moving. I'm stuck at one place and am just afraid to move all that much in case of making a mistake. There's just so many particles of powder on the ground even though I've taken it out, that after doing wudhu or coming out from the bathroom, I'm bound to step on it using my wet foot. If I follow what the majority of the scholars say (including the one in the Shafie' madhab), I have rendered myself impure and now have to purify myself using the earth+water method.

I respect the Islam QA questions about fiqh, but that's not the only opinion out there, isn't it? The majority counts too, which is why I'm so worried. In my country, they'd just pressurize me to follow the Shafie' way if I asked. I'm not even sure whether the Islam QA question was answering with respect to all madhabs, one or two of the madhabs, or none at all (not accusing, just asking). And it looks to me that the most solid opinion is that the pig and the dog are equal in the najis classification. :((

"7. Why is there gelatin in the Canadian Centrum line and what is the gelatin source?

The gelatin in the Canadian Centrum line is a processing aid and stabilizing agent used in the production of some of the active ingredients, such as Vitamins A, D, and E, beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene. This agent results in stable active ingredients, which can be then manufactured into solid dosage forms such as tablets. We have been working with our suppliers to find alternate sources of our raw materials that do not require gelatin in their production. However it is not an easy task to find stable replacements for all ingredients.

The animal source of gelatin used varies and may include porcine, poultry or bovine gelatin.

Gelatin is not added to Centrum during the manufacturing process. However in keeping with our policy to declare all active, non-medicinal, and raw materials ingredients, we have declared gelatin as a component of Centrum.

There are only a few suppliers of the active ingredients. Furthermore, not all manufacturers include all non-medicinal ingredients or raw materials on their labels. Don't assume that there is no gelatin in another product simply by reading the label. If you are concerned about the presence of gelatin, you may wish to contact the manufacturer to ensure that gelatin is not included as a component of any ingredient.

These comments apply only to the Canadian Centrum products and not Centrum products sold in other countries.

Wa'alaikumussalam sister. :)

Thank you so, so much for your reply and time in highlighting the article ... unfortunately, I don't live in Canada ... and this news made headway first in the US by American Muslims, till it reached my country and made national news here. Pharmacists nationwide are cautioning not to take the supplement and here's a snippet from the article (just read the English part by the woman named Nina):

Ukti, I can certainly understand your fears and how it has triggered your OCD. Is it safe to assume that you DID check the registration numbers to see if they matched up with the ones you took?
