I am old and new

Salam Alykum, Peace to you.

I am an old man who became Muslim in 2003 and not good at spelling so forgive my errors. Prior I was a devout Athiest until one day I looked at my feet and saw entire civilizations dwelling in one square meter and it hit me hard "there has to be a God".
I was raised Catholic but never could believe God needed a son to be able to forgive man.
I went to a Mosque , the only one locally and there were two Brothers there by happenstance and the door was locked. One opened the door and greeted me with Salam Alykum, which I learned to write from a Libyan. I knew the reply but it took a while to remember it-"Alykum Salam" and I was allowed in.
It was almost time for mid-day prayer after we had spoken for a while and was asked to watch them pray, to which I refused and said that I would join them in prayer but not watch. I made my Shahadah and then prayed. I didn't know what I already believed was a Religion. After we talked some more and I began to attend jumah. The Khutbah was in Arabic which I disliked b/c we're all in America and should speak English or American. I'm originally from the UK.
I decided to give up all my old friends in hope I would know and make better ones. In 9 years I have no freinds and none of my old ones left.
I'm known for asking uncomfortable questions and being overly blunt. I once asked a Brother why is it that when one converts to Islam they instantly want to become an Arab instead of being who they are? "Choice" was the answer that I didn't see myself. I ask from what I observe and don't understand.
I brought up that I could not understand the Khutbah and I believed there was no point in coming and it was changed to English.
There are no other American Brothers there much less those my age and felt as though I landed in a strange land and still do.
I have been told that I see things clearly and have no problem pointing out injustice when I see it and will not accept just feeling bad about it. That I think may have cost me making new friends but don't know. I really think it's the cultural differences. I could not feel more alone at our mosque and nothing has changed in all these years. After Jumah there are groups gathering speaking a tongue I can not understand so I just leave.
I'm told that I understand Islam better than most people who were raised Muslim and I believe that converts just may strive harder to know more but I don't know.
I can no longer afford to drive the distance to attend Jumah, so I don't go often.
After I became Muslim my entire world fell apart including a car accident which has left me disabled. This I know to be a trial from Allah and accept it as such. I went from having wealth and health to losing both including my Sons which have grown up and seem to have forgotten who raised them and have no wife.
Life has become very hard but I have not given up. All I have left are the Angels on my sides and an inquisitive mind, plus my Faith.
I consider myself as a Human Being who is trying to be the best Human I can be knowing I will return to who created me.
I do not post much but this is me.

Many Thanks~!

Thank You- Shukran.

I don't know what you mean as to what I've learned. I will not fall into the same trap Musa / Moses did by expressing knowledge. In vast knowledge of life, I have learned little to what there is to know. I have only lived a long time, I have done a lot and seen too much.

Walaikkum Assalam,

Brother, you don't have to change your name in case it is meaningful, at the same time shouldn't be a name of false God or Immoral name.

According to what I have searched, "Michael" means "who is like God?". This is a rhetorical question, implying no person is like God. Which indeed is the truth. I don't think it is a wrong name to have. So, you don't have to change the name.

Someone more knowledgeable than me will advice you more

And Allah knows the best.

Yes, I know the meaning of the name given to me by my well intending father, "Michael" but all it does is humble me knowing nothing man knows is like God / Allah(swt) much less myself. When a well intended Brother told me that my Infidel Father named me I got a bit angry that someone called my Father that.
In Islam we are taught to respect our Fathers but to not follow his ways if they are wrong or unbelievers.
I do not know the heart of my Father, so I can not judge him, only Allah can judge and any man who does judge will be judged even harder. It's best to keep our heads and eyes down so we don't fall pray to judging b/c nothing betrays us more than our eyes.
Our senses are bestowed to us so we can see the proofs and evidences that there is indeed but One God of creation. We're totally surrounded by theses proofs yet many a man are blind to them which baffles me to no end. I think blindness is really a blessing.

It is far too long for me to write, so allow me to provide a link to my meaning.
I will try to C & P it and see what happens-Insha Allah. Then you can see the lesson we all need to learn.

The Story of Sayyidna Musa (Moses) and Al-Khadir (Elias)
Details of this event appear in the Sahih of al-Bukhari and Muslim. There, according to a narration of Sayyidna Ubaiyy ibn Ka'b Radhi-Allahu Anh: Allah be pleased with him, the Holy Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam: Peace be upon him has been reported to have said: "Once when Musa (A.S) rose to address his people, the Bani Isra'il, those present there asked him, 'of all human beings, who is the foremost in knowledge?' Since (in the knowledge of Sayyidna Musa (A.S) there was no one more knowledgeable than himself) therefore, he said, 'I am the foremost in knowledge.' (Allah Ta'ala has His special ways of grooming prophets close to Him, therefore, this statement was not welcome. The etiquette of the situation demanded that he should have resigned his answer to the ultimate knowledge of Allah and said that 'Allah alone knows as to who is the foremost in knowledge among His entire creation'). So, the answer given by Musa (A.S) brought displeasure from Allah Ta'ala and to him it was revealed: 'Present on the meeting point of the two seas, there is a servant of Ours. He is more knowledgeable than you.' (When Musa (A.S) came to know this, he submitted before Allah Ta'ala that it was incumbent on him to travel and learn from the person who is superior to him in knowledge). So, he said: 'O Allah, tell me where to find him.' Allah Ta'ala said, 'put a fish in your basket and travel in the direction of the meeting point of the two seas. When you reach the place where this fish disappears, that shall be the place where you meet that servant of Ours.' As commanded, Musa (A.S) put a fish in the basket and set out. His attendant, Yusha' ibn Nun was also with him. During the course of travel, they reached a rock where they lied down resting their heads against it. All of a sudden, on that spot, the fish moved, left the basket and went into the sea. (With this miracle of the fish coming alive and slipping out into the sea, yet another miracle unfolded when) Allah Ta'ala stopped the flow of water currents all along the way the fish took into the sea making the place like a tunnel into the sea. (Yusha' ibn Nun witnessed this extraordinary event while Musa (A.S) was asleep). When he woke up, Yusha' ibn Nun forgot to mention this strange happening before him and resumed their journey onwards from there. They travelled for a whole day and night. When came the morning of the next day, Musa (A.S) asked his companion of the journey, 'bring us our morning meal. We have, indeed, had much fatigue from this journey of ours.' The Holy Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam: Peace be upon him said that (as Divinely arranged) Musa (A.S) felt no fatigue at all before that, so much so that he had over-traversed the spot where he had to reach. It was only when Musa (A.S) asked for his morning meal that Yusha' ibn Nun recalled the fate of the fish, tendered his excuse for having forgotten to mention it for the Satan had made him forget about the need to report this matter to him earlier. After that, he disclosed that the dead fish had come alive and gone into the sea in an amazing manner. Thereupon, Musa (A.S) said: 'that was what we were looking for.' (That is, the place where the fish comes alive and disappears was the desired destination).

So they turned back that very instant and took the same route they had taken earlier in order to find the spot they were looking for. Now, when they reached the familiar rock, they saw that someone was lying there covered with a sheet from the head down to the feet. Musa (A.S) (taking things as they were) offered the greeting of salam. Al-Khadir (A.S) asked, 'where in the world does this 'salam' come from in this (uninhabited) wilderness?' Thereupon, Musa (A.S) said, I am Musa.' Al-Khadir (A.S) asked, 'Musa Bani Isra'il?' He confirmed, 'Yes, I am Musa Bani Isra'il. I have come here to ask you to teach me the knowledge Allah has given to you specially.'
Al-Khadir (A.S) said, 'you will be unable to remain patient with me. O Musa, there is a knowledge Allah has given to me and which you do not have while there is a knowledge which Allah has given to you which I do not have.' Musa (A.S) said, 'if Allah wills, you will find me patient. I shall not disobey you in any of your orders.'
Al-Khadir (A.S) said, If you are to be with me, do not ask me about anything unless I tell you about it first.'
After having said this, they started walking by the shore. Then came a boat. A ride was negotiated. The boat people recognized al-Khadir (A.S) and let them come on board free of any charges. No sooner did he step into the boat, al-Khadir (A.S) forced out a panel of the boat with the help of an axe. Musa (A.S) could not restrain himself. He said, 'These people gave us a free ride on the boat. This is what you did to them in return. You tore their boat apart so that they would drown. You have really done something very bad.' Al-Khadir (A.S) said, 'Did I not tell you before that you will be unable to remain patient with me?' Thereupon, Musa (A.S) offered his excuse that he had forgotten his promise and requested him not to take him to task on his act of inadvertent omission.
The Holy Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam: Peace be upon him, after relating this event, said, "The first objection raised by Musa (A.S) against al-Khadir (A.S) was activated by forgetfulness, the second as a condition and the third by intention. (Meanwhile) a bird came, sat down on the side of the boat and took out a beak-full of water from the sea. Thereupon, addressing Musa (A.S), al-Khadir (A.S) said, "even the combined knowledge of the two of us, yours and mine, cannot claim a status against Divine knowledge that could be compared even with the water in the beak of this bird as related to this sea."
Then, having disembarked from the boat, they started walking on the shore. All of a sudden, al-Khadir (A.S) saw a boy playing with other boys. Al-Khadir (A.S) killed the boy with his own hands. The boy died. Musa (A.S) said, 'you took an innocent life unjustly. Indeed, this was a grave sin you committed.' Al-Khadir (A.S) said, 'Did I not tell you before that you will be unable to remain patient with me?' Musa (A.S) noticed that this matter was far more serious than the first one. Therefore, he said, 'if I question you after this, you will be free to remove me from your company. As far as I am concerned, you have reached the limit of excuses from me.'
After that, they started walking again until they passed by a village. They requested the village people to house them as guests. They refused. In this habitation, they noticed a wall that was about to collapse. Al-Khadir (A.S) made it stand straight with his own hands. Surprised, Musa said, 'we requested their hospitality. They refused. Now you did such a big job for them. If you wished, you could have charged wages from them to do it.' Al-Khadir (A.S) said, '' (It means that the condition now stands fulfilled, therefore, time has come for you and me to part company).
Then, after telling Musa (A.S) the reality behind the three events, Al-Khadir (A.S) said: which means: 'That was the reality of the events over which you were unable to remain patient.'
Once he had narrated this entire event, the Holy Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam: Peace be upon him said, "I wish Musa (A.S) could have remained more patient so that we would have come to know more about the two of them."
This lengthy Hadith appears in the Sahih of Al-Bukhari and Muslim in a manner that it establishes three things. It clearly mentions the name of Sayyidna Musa (A.S) as Musa Bani Isra'il, the name of his young companion during the travel as Yusha' ibn Nun and the name of the 'servant of Allah' to whom Sayyidna Musa (A.S) was sent towards the meeting point of the two seas as Al-Khadir. Now, from this point onwards, we shall take up the verses of the Qur'an, and explain their sense.

Salam alaykum brother Michael and welcome here.

A very inspiring story with a lot of courage, determination and perseverance. It's very beneficial to have a mixture of all ages and an honor to have you with us here. Sorry to hear that you found it difficult to fit in in with other muslims. I hope you feel more comfortable here. I hope things get easier for you and may Allah mend ties with your children and loved ones.

well come on board Michael./(it seems as you haven't changed your name or have any?)

If the meaning of Michael or any western name is verified as not against Islam in meaning then there is no need to change it. Doing so would be left to personal choice. The companions were reverts to Islam. Those who had arabic names, their names did not necessariy carry islamic meanings but the prophet pbuh only changed those that were against Islam or had a bad meaning in general. A lot of muslims have names that mean something in their language but not not necessarily have an Islamic meaning. E.g. a name meaning sweet, pride and so on..

I'm afraid I'm always a bit short on time these days, but many welcomes to the site. I pray it will be of benefit to you, and help you. I look foward to seeing you around akhi.

Your story is touching and sadly similar to a motif I've heard with other converts/reverts, even some of our brothers and sisters on this site can strongly relate to the situation you go through now. SubhanAllaah... May Allaah keep you and all of them strong and give you all goodness in this life and the next!

Shahada is testimony of Faith. "I bear witness without any doubt that there is no God but God and I bear witness without any doubt that Muhammad is the Prophet of God"~!!!! I also believe that the Qur'an is the Word of God but not a part of Shahada.

I did not know this story of Musa was unknown as it's clearly in the Qur'an in the latter part of Surah 18.

Read 79: As for damage to the boat, a local King was taking all ships / boats but didn't take this boat due to the damage and the good people were able to keep it.

Read 80: The boy who he killed, his parents were people of Faith and the boy would have led them astray. They were given another Child.

Read 82: The wall, it belonged to two orphans and under it was a buried treasure left to them by their Father who was a Righteous Man (like my Father). The boys attained had their full strength and the treasure was a Mercy to them.

Please read Surah 18 for the proper reading of this.

As for what I have learned from the Brothers at the Mosque is that "Insha Allah" is an excuse to not do something before they don't do it.

PLEASE stop looking to me for knowledge, it's available to all who seek it and the best part is that it's free of charge. The most I might be able to do by the Grace of Allah is point you in the right direction and say more about myself. I am human and as such, filled with opinions, frailties and errors. I am OLD and no more.

Thank you all for your warm Welcomes.

Brother 2ngamaa,

I believe your intentions are sincere and good, but let's give our new brother some breathing space here sah? We don't want to pounce on him or overwhelm him with our eagerness, tis a thread of welcomes not questions.

I'm sure come time he'll be able to learn much and ask his own questions as needed insha'Allaah, so for now let's be easy on him so he can get used to being around.

PS: ^ That insha'Allaah has nothing to do with tomorrow, but the will of Allaah! Don't let bad experiences bog you down brother inquizator, remember, Islaam is perfect, but Muslims? Decidedly not.
