In plain and simple words.

Its a little confusing. Under what conditions should we make sujood Al Sahw Before saying the Salam and/or After saying salam ?

Assalamu Alaikkum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Please refer the pdf that sister Tabassum07 provided, it mentions two cases - one for before salaam and one after that.

So, you can get the answer depending on your situation.

Assalaam walaikum,

See if this helps:

Prostration for distractedness (Sujood-us-Sahw) is an established practice (Sunna) of the Prophet (PBUH). Whenever he was reminded by people that he forgot to do something in it that is mandatory, he would make up what he missed, e.g. a rak`a (Bowing) then make two prostrations after the prayer. Several authentic Hadeeths teach that the making up can be done during the prayer or after ending it. If you choose to make the prostrations during the prayer, then you have to do them after the Tashahhud and before the Tasleem.

They are two prostrations, with a sit up between them. Each prostration is made as the normal prostration, but instead of saying “Subhaana Rabbiy Al-`Azheem” (Sanctified is my Lord, the Grand) three times, you instead say once, “Subhaana man la yas-hoo wa la yanaam” (Sanctified is He who does not get distracted, nor sleeps). As usual, each movement is preceded by the words “Allaahu Akbar” (God is greater).

So, let’s take a few examples:

You prayed `Ishaa’ three rak`aat instead of four. In this case, you rise up, say “Allaahu Akbar”, pray a rak`a until you say the Tashahhud. Then, and before Tasleem, you make the two prostrations and then make the Tasleem.
You prayed `Ishaa’ five rak`aat instead of four. In this case, you rise up, say “Allaahu Akbar”, then immediately sit down, make the two prostrations of Sahw then say the Tasleem.
You forgot to make the first Tashahhud, or you made three prostrations instead of two, etc. This case is like the second case above. You only make the two prostrations of Sahw.

If you have done either of the above two cases, but remembered that during your prayer, i.e., have not yet made the Tasleem, then you may continue with the Tasleem and do like above, or you may do it before the Tasleem. Both methods have been narrated in authentic Hadeeths.

Assalamu Alaikkum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatuhu,

I am providing the excerpt from the book the sister provided,
So it is performed before salutation in two cases:

(i) If it is due to deficiency, due to the hadeeth of ‘Abdullaah ibn Buhaynah (radiallahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) prostrated for forgetfulness before the salutation when he left the first tashahhud, and the hadeeth with its wording has
preceded.

(ii) If it is due to doubt when he is unable to distinguish which of the two possibilities carries more weight in his mind, due to the hadeeth of Aboo Sa’eed al-Khudree (radiallahu anhu) about one who doubts in his prayer and does not know how many he has prayed, whether it is three or four rak’ahs. So the Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) commanded such a person to perform two prostrations before
giving the salutation, and the hadeeth and its wording have preceded.

And the prostration for forgetfulness is performed after the salutations:

(i) If it is due to an addition in the prayer, due to the hadeeth of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood (radiallahu anhu) when the Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) prayed Zulu with five rak’ahs, so they mentioned this to him after the salutation, so he (sallallahu alaihe wa-
sallam) performed two prostrations and then gave the salutation. Nor did he (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) explain that his prostration after the salutation was due to the fact that he only knew of the addition after having performed it. So this shows that this ruling is general and that prostration because of addition is to be done after the salutation r whether he knows of the addition before the salutation or after it.

From this also is the case of one who forgetfully gives the salutation before completion of the prayer, then he remembers and completes it. He has added a salutation within the prayer, so he should prostrate after salutation due to the hadeeth of Aboo Hurairah
(radiallahu anhu) that the Prophet gave the salutation in the Zuhr or the ‘Asr prayer after two rak’ahs. They mentioned it to him, so he completed the prayer and
then gave the salutation, then prostrated for forgetfulness, and the hadeeth with its wording has preceded.

(ii) If it is due to forgetfulness when one of the two possibilities carries more weight in his mind, due to the hadeeth of Ibn Mas’ood (radiallahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallahu alaihe wa-sallam) commanded that the one who forgets in his prayer should strive to ascertain what is correct, and then to complete his prayer on that basis, then to give the salutation and to prostrate, and the hadeeth and its wording have preceded.

Then if two cases of forgetfulness occur for him, one of them requiring prostration before the salutation and the other requiring prostration after it, then the scholars say that prostration before the salutation predominates, so he should prostrate before it.

An example of this (is if) a person prays Zulu and stands up for the third rak’ah without sitting for the first tashahhud, then he sits in the third rak’ah thinking it to be the second. He then remembers that it is the third - so he should stand, pray a further
rak’ah, and prostrate for forgetfulness and then give the salutation. So this person left the first tashuhhud, which requires prostration before the salutation, and added a sitting in the third rak’ah, which requires prostration after the salutation, so the prostration
before the salutation predominates, and Allaah knows best.

as salam 'alaykum

JazakAllah khair for sharing the book sister, may Allah reward you equally when we are benefiting ourselves taking lessons from the book.
barakAllahu feekum

the translator of the book Aboo Talhah Dawood ibn Ronald Burbank and his wife, may Allah grant them Jannah, they both died in the way to Hajj.

He translated numerous books into English.

and both Abu Talhah and Umm Talhah were in a state of Ihraam, calling out the talbiyah wherein the Tawheed of Allaah, the sole right He has of worship is called out with an audible voice. The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu 'alaihi wassallam) stated on an occasion when a Companion died in a state of Ihraam:

"Wash him with water and sidr (lotus), and shroud him in two garments. Do not embalm or perfume him, and do not cover his head or face. He will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment making the Talbiyah."
[Bukhaaree and Muslim]

The bus they were on caught fire, and both of them were killed in the fire. Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wassallam) stated:

"Death from burning is a Shahaadah (martyrdom)…"
[Declared hasan by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Ahkaamul-Janaa'iz, p.55]

and look how Allah has raised the honor of His slaves, they passed away in this month of Dhul-Hijjah on their way to Hajj in these, the most virtuous days in the world, as the Prophet salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam stated - days in which righteous deeds are most beloved to Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Most Majestic. Their salatul Janazah took place in Masjid Al Haram

may Allah azza wa jal, bless us death with sujud, ihram, salat, while reciting Quran.

may Allah honor us and let not stand in front of Him with our sins, may Allah help us to have our sins forgiven before we reach sakarat al-maut

Salam alikom,

It's sunnah and not fard (obligatory), so you don't actually have to do it. However, basically if you make any mistakes in the salah (such as missing a unit of prayer, or doing soujoud once instead of twice...) and you do realise that you did that mistake, then it's good to do the two prostrations of forgetfulness at the end.

so lets sat I forgot to say Subhana Rabyial Ala during sujood. Can I Make sujood as Sahw for that matter ? If I could do I do it before saying salam or After ?

Yes, just before you say the salams at the end, you make 2 prostrations and then sit up and say the salam to your right then left.

However, if say you forget to do one unit, so instead of doing 4 units at duhr prayer, you do 3 and then you remember (whether before or after you say the salams) that you only did 3 units, then you should stand up and do the remaining unit as if you're just continuing from the third unit, or where ever you left off, as normal. After you've done that unit, just before the salams do 2 soujoud, then say salam.

And if you forget to do the 2 prostrations of forgetfulness at the end, it doesn't matter because it's not fard (obligatory) as I said above.

Wa `alaykum salaam wa rahmatullaah

Brother I advise you to not speak without knowledge- unless you are backing up your statement with proof and views of the scholars. Can you tell me which scholar said that Al-Sajdah al-Sahw is Mustahabb? What is sunnah is the discussion as to *when* to do the sajdah. The scholars differ as to whether the sajdah is to be done before or after the taslaam (salaam).

As for brother Islam... then to keep it as brief as possible:

- If you add/omit a pillar (out of forgetfulness) in Salaah, then you do the prostrations after the Tasleem (Salaam), and after the two prostrations you say salaam again.

If you added, then you discontinue that pillar and return back to where you are meant to be. Ex: If you stand up for the 5th rak`ah, and then you realize that you stood up for a 5th rak`ah in a 4 rak`ah prayer.. then you immediately go down to tashahhud, recite your tashahhud and at the end- you say salaam and do the prostrations followed by another salaam.

If you omitted a pillar and you went to the next pillar- you go back and perform the pillar you omitted. Ex: You remember, after standing up for the 2nd rak`ah, that you forgot to do the 2nd sajdah in the first rak`ah. Then as soon as you remember, you go back and do the 2nd sajdah and then you carry on praying your salaah from 2nd sajdah.

- If you omit the first Tashahhud (out of forgetfulness) in a salaah that has two tashahhud, then you do the prostrations before the tasleem.

In the above cases, the prostrations are obligatory.

However, if you were to do the prostrations before the tasleem for any mistake you make in your salaah- whether the mistake is in the pillars or the obligator actions... then this is acceptable. As to when to do the prostrations is disputed by the scholars and is an open matter.

Below are a list of the pillars of Salaah (taken from an article):

The Arkaan (Pillars) of Salaah are Twelve:

1) Qiyaam – Standing up for prayer. Thus, the one who does not stand up for Salaah, without excuse, for obligatory prayers, his Salaah is invalid.

2) Takbeeratul-Ihraam – Takbeer is to say: Allahu Akbar. Takbeeratul-Ihraam is the first Takbeer with which one enters the Salaah, and so it is a Rukn of Salaah, unlike the rest of the Takbeeraat of Salaah

3) To recite Soorah al-Faatihah

4) Rukoo'. That is to bow. The perfection of Rukoo' is achieved by placing ones hands on the knees, grabbing them, while the back is straight and the head in level with the rest of the back, and the elbows away from the sides. To fulfil the obligation of Rukoo' is for hands to touch the knees.

5) Standing up after Rukoo'. This is until one’s back is straight. If one stands up in hurry, and does not straighten his back, then he misses out on a Rukn, which makes that rak’ah invalid.

6) Sujood. That is, to Prostrate. The perfection of Sujood is achieved by placing the hands in level with the shoulders with fingers joined together, while spacing out between the elbow and the sides, as well as between the thighs and the stomach. The obligation in Sujood is to prostrate on seven limbs: 1) The forehead and the nose, 2 & 3) the two hands, 4 & 5) the two knees, 6 & 7) the toes placed on ground facing the Qiblah. Thus, if any of these limbs are not on the ground, it renders the Sajdah to be invalid.

7) To sit between two Sajdahs. While in the position of Iftiraash: Which is to sit on one’s left leg, while the right foot is perpendicular to the ground, and the toes are facing the Qiblah.

8) To be tranquil in all the Arkaan.

9) The last Tashahhud. Tashahhud is to say: at-Tahiyaatu liLlaahi was-Salaatu wat-Tayyibaat… to his words: wa Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'Abduhu wa Rasooluh.

10) Sitting for the last Tashahhud. This is regarded to be a Rukn in itself, because it is possible that one may begin reciting Tashahhud, during the process of getting up from Sujood, but before sitting for it, in which case, his Salaah is invalid, because he missed out on the Rukn of 'sitting for Tashahhud'. If the Salaah only has one Tashahhud, like Salaatul-Fajr, then one sits in the position of Iftiraash, which has been described above. If Salaah contains two Tashahhud, like Dhuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib and 'Ishaa' then one sits in the Tawarruk position whilst in the final tashahhud, which is to sit on one’s left thigh, while exiting both feet from the right side, making the right foot perpendicular to the ground, and the toes facing the Qiblah.

11) To end the Salaah with Tasleem, which is to say as-Salaamu 'Alaikum wa-raHmatullah, by turning ones head to the right first, and then to the left.

12) Performing these Arkaan, in the order mentioned above. Thus, one may not perform Rukoo' before Sujood and so on. For example: If one forgets to make Rukoo' after al-Faatihah, but goes straight into 'standing up after Rukoo', and then remembers in the second Sajdah of the same Rak'ah that he forgot to make Rukoo', then he should get up from Sujood, immediately, and perform Rukoo' which he missed, and then perform all the usual Arkaan and Waajibaat that come after Rukoo'.

These are the twelve Arkaan of Salaah. If one leaves them intentionally or unintentionally, the Salaah is rendered invalid. One is obliged to perform the missed Rukn, as the Sajdah as-Sahw is not enough to replace it.

But, how am I supposed to remember it all?!

One can commit these Arkaan to his memory by doing three things:

i) Remember, that most of the Arkaan are the most visibly apparent actions of Salaah, such that an onlooker can tell whether the one praying has missed out a Rukn or added to it. For example, standing up for Salaah, or performing Rukoo', or standing up after it, or performing Sujood etc.
ii) Remember the number, that they are 12, no more and no less.
iii) Remind yourself of the Arkaan, with the help of the above two points. So you set yourself a target of remembering 12 most apparent actions of Salaah, then begin counting from the first Rukn, which is Qiyaam, till the last, which is the order of Arkaan.

So just think, what is the first thing you do in Salaah?
Answer: You stand up.
Therefore, Standing up for Salaah is the first Rukn.

Then what do you do?
Answer: You say: Allaahu Akbar, thus, the second Rukn.

This is how you keep reminding yourself of the rest of the Arkaan, until you are able to count all 12 of them.

Obviously, not all of the Arkaan are most visibly apparent, like Takbeeratul-Ihraam or al-Faatihah, the last Tashahhud, but the secret of ease in remembering all the Arkaan lies in the fact that the invisible Arkaan are only three. Likewise, not all of the most visibly apparent actions of Salaah are Arkaan, rather some of them are Waajibaat, while others are only Sunan acts, for example; reciting al-Faatihah aloud in aloud prayers, or reciting a Soorah after al-Faatihah in the first two Rak'ahs, placing the right hand over the left in Qiyaam, or raising the hands, etc are from the Sunan, recommended actions of Salaah, and not from the Arkaan nor the Waajibaat of Salaah.

Another thing to remember with regards to Tashahhud, whether it is the middle one (which is a Waajib), or the last one (which is a Rukn as we said), is that whenever Tashahhud is mentioned, whether in Arkaan or Waajibaat, it is instantly followed by 'Sitting for Tashahhud'. Thus, only by remembering one Rukn/Waajib of Tashahhud, you should automatically remember the next Rukn/Waajib which goes with it, which is to sit for Tashahhud.

Wassalamu Alaikkum wa rahamatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Just a clarification, akhi, regarding the number of pillars and its order. I read a little different description somewhere else.

For example, some say erecting oneself from sujood is a pillar too and totally mentions 14 pillars. (http://abdurrahman.org/salah/reqofprayerwahab.pdf).

And there is also an article which mentions 13 pillars ( http://www.subulassalaam.com/articles/article.cfm?article_id=98 ).

So, I would like to know if these pillars are just for our convenience or is it a strict rule?

It's just the same thing- just that different people elaborate on the pillars more.

The 12 pillars was mentioned by Ibn Qudaamah. And other scholars will say 14. They will, for example, add a pillar after the 5th pillar and say that one should stand straight after raising from rukoo`. Whereas, the scholars who mention 12, will include 'standing erect' as part of the 5th pillar.

I hope that makes sense.
