Just got done talking with my US neighbor about his latest business trip to Saudi Arabia. He explained to me how life is so hard in that region of the world and how it must be really tough for women especially who can't enjoy basic everyday life's activities. For instance; in Saudi Arabia women cannot drive, and they cannot be out in public alone without the escort of a male relative. On the other hand, in certain private bars men will go in and grab a beer to drink, but it's all done privately in Saudi Arabia... I did not know how to answer except that these actions have no connection to the real Islam.. My neighbor is a good man. I like him and we get along.. He is also intelligent enough to realize that the true Islam is innocent of some of the severe restrictions implemented in some countries.. I guess; I got really upset with that these facts about Women and life in Saudi Arabia can draw a bad and negative iamge about Islam.

Does anyone here from Saudi Arabia that can address this issue for me??

Jazakum Allah Khair.

I have met many awesome Somali brothers and they have been nothing short of kind, respectful, and knowledgeable.... What happened to you??

Even so; I am not going to change my good image I have of Somalis based on your post. I realize even in Somalia there are the good, the bad and the ugly.

Thank you brother... :)

aoa,

these westerners get drunk and depressed. they cheat on one another and their women divorce them. they have lots of broken families and children growing up with single parents. when they see a blessed family life of the east, they get jealous and try to cause fasaad (discord) in them

the west may have all the money, but the east has a better family life.

BigAk isn't stupid. He/she was only asking a question! I don't know why you found it offensive especially since the answer to his question is yes. The women in Saudi are treated unfairly as they cannot drive and the men have multiple wives without the former wife's permission (I don't know if this is islamically correct but if that happened to me, naturally I'd feel awful). The son's are treated in a better way than the daughter's by their fathers. The women find it very distressing, even more so because Islam is against treating women unfairly. The women are unable to speak out aswell. I know it's true of the Saudi royal family. I'm sure not all of the saudi men treat the women in this way but from what I know most of them do unfortunately.

There's no point on hating on the West and getting all defensive. BigAk was only asking a question to increase his/her knowledge. He/she wasn't implying anything. I'm really suprised at the way you have all reacted to this question.

How is not being able to drive, a bad thing.

U know there in Saudia women are too pampered. They have a driver that they call and he chauffeurs them all over. They get to sit relax talk on the phone, read, etc.. while traveling.

There is also there maids, that relieve them from needing to do any house chores. Not all have but it is very common in the khaleej.

My wife here in the USA, would love to have this type of service, but we know what that would cost.

The fact that they're not given a choice is a bad thing.

Thank you for coming to my defense sister.. Jazaki Allah Khair.. I am a male btw.. lol

I could have easily reacted badly to my Somali brother zakariya who insulted me.. but, it is not the Islamic thing to do to treat him like he did me. :astag:

Correct.... I would love to have some driver drive me everywhere so I can sit, relax, read.. etc... But, I would not be happy if that choice is being taken away from me. What if some emergency happened and a driver is not around, should it be illegal for me to drive even then??

I guess; I am waiting to hear from some Saudi before I start making any judgements.... Am I missing something in this equation??

well i m not saudi but the fact that the west has also tried to 'americanize' my society is disturbing. and now divorce and suicide rates are rising.

how the arabs treat their women is their culture and tradition. its nobody else's business. you cant go around 'americanizing' the world.

i mean what's next on the agenda? 'oh no muslim countries don't let their citizens drink alcohol? oh no! oppression oppression!'

Bro... Your logic is seriously flawed. There's nothing in the Quran or Sunna against women driving cars.. LOL ... We're talking here about the right to drive a car if an individual desires. In addition; How are you classifying driving a car "an americanized" activity?? LOL .... Logic brother!!! Logic!! LOL

if a country has a law, its their own law . not anyone else's business.

an english law states "a pregnant woman can pee in a policman's hat". what is the LOGIC?

another one: "Any students taking an examination can request cookies and ale"

US law with no logic:
Nebraska: If a child burps during church, his parents may get arrested.

Alabama - it is illegal to play dominoes on sunday

New York - children aren't allowed to collect cigar stubs as hobby

Canada: its illegal to serve moose alcohol

Wyoming - you can be fined for riding an ugly horse.

how many times do you hear this in the media?

cars are driven at very high speeds in saudi arabia.

if there is an accident, it would be disrespectful to shout at a woman or unislamic to converse with her. men may purposefully cause accidents (they are rich, they can afford it) n then try to intermingle with the woman for some other purpose.

so that is why the law is there. for the respect and modesty of the woman. not the oppression.

i hope that satisfies the question

saudia arabia is not the model Islamic state - there are many problems with it - but there are many problems in the whole muslim world because people are not doing the Deen and not following educated scholars.

We have to change ourselves so Allah swt can change the condition.

about women not allowed to drive - nothing to do with Islamic law

true brother true. but i cant imagine any country would try to oppress women. can fathers oppress their own daughters? do they not love them? are they not human?

saying that saudis or islam oppress women, is as absurd as saying islam was spread by the word. can you change someone's belief and heart by a sword?

one thing the west forgets before making such accusations is that family is very important in the East. it would be unthinkable that in a society where there are 100 families, 100 fathers and they would all agree to devise laws that would oppress their own daughters.
