Two Britons have died in Saudi Arabia, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The deaths reportedly came in an explosion on board a coach carrying pilgrims to the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

Although the exact cause of the blast or fire near Jeddah has yet to be determined, it is thought to have been accidental.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office declined to comment on reports that those who died were a couple from Birmingham, but did confirm that officials are providing help to family members.

The spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the death of two British nationals in Saudi Arabia.

"We are in touch with the local authorities and the next-of-kin and are providing consular assistance at this difficult time."
