Imaam Ahmad (rahimahuAllaah) was someone unafraid of being imprisoned. It was reported that he said the cell which he was put in during his imprisonment was the same as his house. Why? Because neither contained anything in it. SubhanAllaah!

‘Ali bin al-Madeeni said: “I entered the house of Ahmad Ibn Hanbal and his home was exactly as the home of Suwaid Ibn Ghaflah (a renowned Taabi’ee known for his ascetism) was described, with regard to its simplicity and humbleness.”[1]

However, one thing he was afraid of was the whip and being unable to take it.

Imaam Ahmad used to supplicate: “O Allaah, forgive Abu Haytham al-Hadat."

His son asked who this was, and he replied: “This man was next to me when I was broken in front of Al-Mu’tasim, and they had stretched me, and he said to me, ‘O Ahmad, do you know me? I am Abu Haytham al-Ayaar (the thief). I have been hit on my back 18,000 times; all of it is for the sake of the Shaytan. I am still willing to take more and not show them any weakness, and you Ahmad are going to be lashed for the sake of Allaah.”

Imaam Ahmad said: “By Allaah, nothing helped me to be stronger than these words!”
