it's some time that I made to myself this question:is it possible to make the "Fast of the word"?
I'm tired to talk all day long and I wish to know if it is written in some hadith if I can spend the whole day without saying a word to anybody, just because I want to concentrate to Allah and my belief.like Ramadan, does it exist a way to be in silence at leat one whole day.I wait for a better explaination in sh Allah:wasalam:

Wa'aleykum salaam!

When I read this, I remembered this quote, "If speech is silver, then silence is Gold":D

So ukhty, You mean to say that you want to "fast From talking" right?

I've never heard of fasting from "talking" only, but to watch what comes out of your mouth, becouse the tounge has so Many flaws, subhanallah! And I believe this also applies to everyday life, not just during fasting.

Although It's a good thing that you're trying to refrain from talking, I don't see how you can stay silent for a whole day when you've got kids at home sister:)

And the Prophet saw said,

"Man kaana yu'minu Billahi wal yawmil aakhir, Fal yaqul khairan, aw li yasmut"
.."Whomever believes in Allah and the last day should say good or remain silent"

Basically, we should have something important to say when we want to speak. but if you don't, then to avoid the Fitnah that's caused by the tougue, we shall keep quiet. Wallahu a'lam!

thank you sis!you've reason,I have children, but I saw with surprise that they are well educated,I tell why:every friday I listen Salat al Jamu'a on the Oman holy Quran radio.by the way I wished to listen and follow what sunnah says about talking during salat al jumu'a,I was in total silence and my daughters too, they listened and I didn't need to say them to be silent.I really am tired to give answers,to say this and that,I'm not a vulgar person, but at least one day I wish not to say a word, that's all.so does anyone know if it's possible?because if it is ok,I am justified if I'm silent:it's written in some hadith, but it isn't possible, well I'll give up and avoid to talk to much without passing as a mute person:SMILY149:

Fear Allah
Assalamualaikum

You know just the other day I was about to post a same thread.

I was out with my family and as usual, I'll try to recite as much of the Holy Quran as I knew Alhamdulillah. That's what I do for dhikr. But whenever someone talks to me about something, I'll end up saying only a yes or no because of fear. Fear that from a proper conversation turning into idle talking. And idle talk leads to the hardening of the heart.

Most times I'll end up talking and I forgot what I've recited. Astaghfirullah. Im still striving though, its really tough.

Saalam alaikum

the longer we keep our mouth sut, the better we'll be.
but if your mouth speaks up good things, useful things and conducts your necessary duties like serving family, teaching students...so whats the problem??
I thing if keeping silence/full mute keeps away from your necessary duties then it is not permissible. I thing so. It is nowhere instructed that you have to forget everything, ahve to keep mute and do pray to Allah azza wa jal. if it was permissible then prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam surely have done this, because he had the most concentration towards Allah azza wa jal.

beleive me sister, may be my reply seems like harsh, but I'm just writing it with a smile on my face. may be my clear cut answer made this little harsh.

I'm also not free from this type of confusions... he he...sometimes i think that I should not speak, otherwise it will bark...lolz.....he he...and sometimes it really barks....then i think,,,ohho, it would be better to have silence.

I think you were very clear to your statement and so you posted this. but there is no such FASTING, I guess.
try to remain silent most of the time, dont talk idle things, dont listen to music coz it lets the mouth to sing idle talks, dont gossip for hours over phone or direct, coz the moe time you will forget Allah azza wa jal, the Satan will more have the chance to flow into the idle talk, may be that can lead to back-biting, coz satan loves to make you eat the meat of your dead brother....and surely he will not loose the chance.

whenever you get time, recite from Quran, make dua, Dhikr, inshaa'Allah you and your mouth will be fresh. i try these, you can try, may be these gonna work..inshaa'Allah...aaaa to make yourself indulge in the Dhikr and recitation, read the Quran with meaning and tafseer. or you can read Hadeeth, beleive me you will not find the time going...

may Allah subhanahu wa ta'la save us from bidah and shirk
may Allah ta'la protect our eeman and health
wassalamu alaikum

I think you should wait for Ramadan so you can do Ithikaaf so you can avoid talking and devout time in remembrance of Allaah and reading Quran.

Or also you can fast on Monday and Fridays where you can spend your time reading Quran doing dhikr and if some one talks to you can say I am fasting today and I want to earn a lot hasanaat so I am busy in reading and remembrance.

^^yesss, that's a grat Idea akhy. If you want to really do this sis, and you can't wait till Ramadaan, you can always fast the two sunnah days..Mon and Thur. and As the brother mentioned...If anyone tries to bother you while you're making dhikr or anytime, Just say, "Inni saa'im" as the prophet saw told us.
May Allah swt reward you with the best for your good intentions ukhty.

thank you very much for your thoughts!I'm seriously intentioned to be silent at least one whole day, because it would be easier to be quiet without telling something everytime.why should I do it only on Ramadan?isn't Dhikr of Allah important all the year long?how can mute people spend their life?have you ever think that there are people who can't speak, who can't hear and who can't see?I thought that it was possible, but on the other side it's very difficult to stop my tongue.it may sounds silly, but I'm liking the silence more than I aspected,so I'll try not to talk too much(like if I was a big talker!!)I asked so because I remembered a verse of the Quran in which it was said to Maryam(AS)not to talk to anybody if it was asked her where did that child come from.(FA IMMA TARAINNA MIN AL BASHARI AHADAN FA QULI INNI NADHARTU LIRRAHMANI SAUMA FA LAN UKALLIMA AL YAUMA INSIYA--SURAT MARYAM)I supposed that it was possible for me too to follow her beautiful example and dedicate my fast to Allah.is ther on tti some sheykh who can exposes me if is it possible to make it?Allah ibarkfikum

As it is narrated it is said in the Quran that Maryam may Allaah be pleased with her Alayhis Sallam vowed not to talk she vowed, she fasted from talking this is the linguistic meaning of the word fast. In Islam we’re not allowed to fast from talking it’s an innovation if somebody says okay go to his wife and says I want to fast from talking to you for a whole year that would be probably a blessing to him but its not applicable it’s not acceptable in Islam this is an innovation because you cannot do something to get closer to Allaah Azza Wa Jal unless the Prophet Sallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has done it or has shown us the way of doing it and the reward we get from doing it

Taken from Shiekh Assim Al Hakeem lecture on Ramadan Fiqh

I don't mean to put any innovation in Islam, but try to think,if something is helpful to Islam is good innovation(like internet for example)and something bad is bad innovation(smoking cigarette and watching football or anything else that distrays us from Allah's dhikr).I just wanted to make it in privacy, one day long, but if you think that remembering Allah with silence is an innovation, how can Islamic Ummah grows up?If everybody followed the Prophet's(SAWS)way of life,I would have seen only men wearing jilbab and having a long shave, but it isn't so:innovations came into the way of dressing of men, they dress with jeans and haven't the long shave, but they are muslims and go to pray regularly.how can you explain it to me?

Well thats what I heard exactly form the Shiekh lecture I'll add the video. The question of men wearing jeans does not fit the category of innovation thats like saying The Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) didn't each chocolate so if we eat isn't that innovation!

You can spend time doing Dhikr as you like but when you asked about doin the same way Maryam May Allaah be pleased with her did I replied to it as I just 2 days back did a transcript of that lecture so it made me remind.Anyways here is the lecture

Assalamu alaikum sister,

good innovation
I just wanted to let you know that there is no such thing as good innovation. What you gave as an example is "innovation of life".....there are two innovation. (A) Innovation of life which permissable(B)Innovation of faith which is haraam So when it comes to innovation of faith....there is no such thing as "good innovation" because it leads to misguidance which then leads to the fire. AuthubiAllaah!
yes you can try to speak less which is good, but if you say I will not speak for a whole day and try to find an evidance for that with in Islam. I am afraid you will not find one :S

i think to say only good is better than remain silent : how can you communicate with your chidren then : I suggest that you repeat some verses from Quran and some hadiths so that your children memorize them : now they can memorize easily and you wll be rewarded InshAllah. May Allah bless you with your family.

No problem Just wait for Ramadan a matter of few days then you will earn double reward doing it InshAllaah. You can do ithikaaf the best way just keep doing Dhikr anytime I do it while driving or when I am waiting for someone or anytimes when I am idle.

I found a hadith that put me in doubts again, who can explain it to me?

(1) narrated Talha bin 'Ubaidullah: A man from Najd with unkempt hair Came To Allah's Apostle and we heard His loud voice But Could not Understand What He Was Saying, till he Came near And Then We Came To Know That He Was Asking about Islam. Allah's Apostle said, "You have to offer prayers perfectly five times in a day and night (24 hours)." Allah's Apostle Said, "You have to offer prayers five times Perfectly in a day and night (24 hours)." The man asked, "Is there any more (praying)?" The man asked, "Is There Any More (praying)?" Allah's Apostle replied, "No, but if you want to offer the Nawafil prayers (you can)." Allah's Apostle replied, "No. But if you want to offer the prayers Nawafil (you can)." Allah's Apostle further said to him: "You have to observe fasts during the month of Ramad, an." Allah's Apostle Further Said to Him: "You have to Observe FastSite During the month of Ramada, also." The man asked, "Is there any more fasting ?" The man asked, "Is There Any More fasting?" Allah's Apostle replied, "No, but if you want to observe the Nawafil fasts (you can.)" Then Allah's Apostle further said to him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." Allah's Apostle replied, "No, But If You Want to Observe the Nawafil FastSite (you can.)" Then Allah's Apostle Further Said to Him, "You have to pay the Zakat (obligatory charity)." The man asked, "Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?" The man asked, "Is There Any Thing Other Than The Zakat for me to pay?" Allah's Apostle replied, "No, unless you want to give alms of your own." Allah's Apostle replied, "No, the unless you want to give alms of your own." And then that man retreated saying, "By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this." And then retreated Saying That Man, "By Allah I will do less nor Neither More Than This." Allah's Apostle said, "If what he said is true, then he will be successful (ie he will be granted Paradise)." (Book #2 , Hadith #44 ) Allah's Apostle Said, "He Said If what is true, then he will be successful (ie he will be Granted Paradise)." (Book # 2 , Hadith # 44 ) :wasalam:
