BALING, 9 Okt Malaysia --
Like all Muslims, Esah Ismail looks forward to the Ramadan fasting month every year to fulfil her obligation.
She is thankful that she is able to complete the whole month of dawn-to-dusk fast, considering that she is a 103-year-old great grandmother.
Esah said she was born in Kampung Lembah Raja, Seberang Perai, in 1902, and had six children, 50 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
She married husband Ariffin Said when in her 20s. Ariffin passed away 25 years ago.
Esah lives with a daughter, Salmah, 55, son-in-law Ismail Ahmad, 60, and seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren in Kampung Tandop here. Her eldest daughter, Che Som, 70, and son Yaakob, 65, live in Pinang Tunggal while three children, Che Don, Wahab and Halijah, have passed away.
Esah said she was still able to do some light work around the house and walk unaided.
Salmah said her mother wakes up early in the morning for the sahur (post-midnight meal before the fast) and spends much of the time in prayer.
Esah disclosed that she has one desire that has remained unfulfilled -- to perform the Haj (pilgrimage to Mecca), which she had been unable to undertake due to financial difficulties.
