I've already read the Quran, and i'm reading it again so I can understand it more. I've also been looking more online and learning more about Islam, and watching videos, etc. I 100% believe with all my heart that Islam is the true religion. I want to revert, but the problem is my family. I know they won't understand, or accept it. My dad always comments on how Islam is a "terrorist" religion and how a lot of Muslims are "evil." I told him he was wrong once, and he just said I don't know what i'm talking about and keeps going on and on about it. I know I don't have to tell them right away, i'm thinking on waiting a few more months until i'm ready to tell them. But i'm worried even then they won't respect my decision. There's a masjid where I live, but it's pretty far from my house. It's a long distance to walk, and I don't drive yet. And like I said i'm planning on hiding it from my parents for a while, so there's no way I can go to one. So i'm wondering do you need to say your shahadah in front of witnesses? If you don't say it in front of witnesses, just to yourself, do you have to say it outloud or can you say it to yourself?

Another issue is praying. I'm planning on taking each step one by one, and not rush into everything. But, i'm worried i'm going to have problems learning since I don't know any Muslims, and i'm pretty much on my own.

Thanks everyone.
And, sorry if I asked in the wrong section. I was confused where to ask at, lol

You sound almost exactly like me. My parents are the same way. My mom is just very religious and strict, but it's my dad who claims all Muslims are terrorists, etc. I put it off for a long time but I converted last month. If you really believe, just do it. As for praying, it's not the easiest thing to learn, especially if you learn alone, but it's possible. There are videos and guides online on how to do it.

If you go to http://www.islamreligion.com/articles/204/?gclid=CP_ygtGAhYoCFSW8WAodXiYrQQ and click on the link for a live chat, you can talk to someone who represents the site. They can help put you in touch with a Muslim in your area if they have any contacts where you live and answer any questions you may have.

welcome

Dear Shannonx : You are most welcome, AlhamduliAllah (All praise be to Allah) who shows us the Truth and guide our hearts to accept it. I am (and all the brothers and sister I am sure) are very happy that Allah swt guided you to the light of Islam . The first thing I advice you to say the Shahada : I think you can say it right now on this website, then don`t rush and tell your parents , You don`t have to .......I think you better become stronger in faith and try to be most kind and polite with your family as a muslem should be so they realaize that Islam is a call for high morality not a religion of terror.
Then I think you should start to learn how to pray since prayer is our Link with Heavens.....The most important practise in Islam is prayer.....take your time and learn step by step : Allah bless you daughter (I have daughters around your age ) ......:salah: :salah: :salah: :salah: :salah: :salah:

Brother Shannonx,

You dont have to confront your parents. First of all you need to strengthen your faith and say Shahadah, learn about Islam gradually and can say your prayers while hiding from your parents. But ofcourse, if your parents happen to know that you have become Muslim then simply admit 'Yes'. But then you should prepare your mind about their reaction. It will not be surprising, as it happens in almost all cases where People enter Islam their parents reaction at first but then things not only become pretty normal but the parents realize that their son/daughter has very positive effect of Islam on him/her, so they also change their mind about Islam being terrorist religion etc.

When your parents come to know about you became Muslim then it will be totally depending on you as more politely you behave and more respect you give them in return to their angry reaction, the more they will think that they are wrong and Islam is infact a very tolarant and beautiful religion.

You can say shadah even by telephone.
But it is very highly recommended to you to go to a Masjid near you and say Shahadah, so that it can be a witness that you became Muslim. That is required because someone should know that you converted at least.
You should at least go to Masjid once, and it will be better to have telephone or email of the Masjid Committee/Imam.

May Allah help you in your tough times.

Bye.

Not a Problem...

I would pick up the Phone rather then e-mail & ask to speak to the "Imam" & then discuss the problem at length and then look at my options.

I beleive in cutting down as many barriers in communicatin as possible & sometimes (like in this case) talking is better then writing; however if you prefer writing please send an e-mail.

If you don't get anywhere please come back & we will explore other avenues of help.

If you prefer me to ring on your behalf & get you an exact contact (Name etc.) so you can then call & speak to a specific person, please let me know. I don't need to know your details; I will just find out who you need to contact & then you can communicate via e-mail or Phone.

Thank you GlobalPeace for the email address.
I'll email them...

Should I just basically put in the email what I wrote here and let (whoever reads the email) know the problems i'm facing?

Hello Shannonx,

I think it'll help you a lot -when your family does find out about your interest in Islam- that you should quote to them what the Qur'an says about Jesus [peace be upon him] and his mother the honourable Virgin Mary. I'm assuming here that you're from a Christian background, so please forgive me if I'm mistaken.

For example, quote to them the relevant verses of Chapter 19 [Maryam].

I find that when Christians find out that we believe that Jesus [peace be upon him] is a Messenger of God, that he was born miraculously without a father and that we love and honour him, then that will greatly decrease any hatred towards Islam and maybe even replace it with curiosity about this religion.

I believe it will also help that you quote to them what other non Muslim personalities and institutions say about Islam.

For example, do you know that the Catholic Church says the following?:

The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all- powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth,(5) who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even His inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. Though they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet. They also honor Mary, His virgin Mother.

To see details about the source of this quotation and other sayings of the Catholic Church about Islam, please read my posts in another forum, by clicking on the following link:

http://www.imanway.com/en/showthread.php?t=4070

Don't get me wrong, though. I'm in no way trying to say that the Catholic Church's beliefs are correct. They are certainly not, since they believe that it's alright to worship Jesus Christ [peace be upon him] and the Holy Spirit along with God Almighty, and they disbelieve in Muhammad [peace be upon him] as His Messenger. Having said that, I think it'll be very hard for any Christian to contend that Islam is evil and a manifestation of terrorism when the Catholic Church [which has fought Islam for a long time, and still does as evidenced by Pope Benedict XVI's speech] said very good things about Islam.

You also have the article written by Uri Avnery -who's a Jewish atheist who fought for the establishment of the State of Israel, was wounded twice and was a member of the Knesset [Israeli Parliament] and later a peace activist-, and he wrote an article that's very favourable about Muhammad [peace be upon him]. Click on the following link to read it:

http://www.imanway.com/en/showthread.php?t=4066

You also have some very prominent figures in the West who have said excellent things about Muhammad [peace be upon him].

For example, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe [1749-1832] is described in wikipedia as:

"a German poet, novelist, theorist, and scientist who is considered one of the giants of the literary world.[1] In addition, aside from being a lawyer and known also as a dramatist, humanist, theorist, and painter, he is also one of few individuals considered to have been a polymath. His most enduring work, indeed, one of the peaks of world literature, is the dramatic poem Faust.[2] Goethe's other well-known literary works include the Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, and the epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther and the auto-biographical novella Elective Affinities, in which became one of the first to speculate on the nature of interpersonal chemistry.

Goethe was one of the key figures of German literature and the movement of Weimar Classicism in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; this movement coincides with Enlightenment, Sentimentality ("Empfindsamkeit"), Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism. The author of Faust and Theory of Colours, he influenced Darwin[3] with his focus on plant morphology[4]. Goethe's influence spread across Europe, and for the next century his works were a primary source of inspiration in music, drama, poetry, and philosophy. He is widely considered to be one of the most important thinkers in Western culture."

Do you know what Goethe said about our Prophet [peace be upon him]?

He is a prophet and not a poet and therefore his Koran is to be seen as Divine Law and not as a book of a human being, made for education or entertainment.

The source of this quotation is the following:

Noten und Abhandlungen zum Weststlichen Dvan, WA I, 7, 32

It's mentioned in the following wikipedia website:

these certain points will make your father think:

ask him...

how many muslim drug dealers has he ver seen?
how many muslims end up on the tv show cops?
how many muslim women prostitutes has he ever seen?
how muslims are on trial for murder in this country?
how many muslims are on trial for rape?
how many muslims drop out from school?

the list can go on forever. he can't deny that muslims aren't know for any of these things. but he can sure tell you that he knows a lot of non-muslims guilty of these things. it is a fact that islam creates great citizens and has the ability to make not so great ones, great too!

i can almost guarantee that your dad believes all muslims should be checked at airports or probably be deported. ask him if all blonde haired white men should be as well, since they blew up buildings in oklahoma city, abortion clinics, the 96 olympic games in atlanta, black churches in alabama and tennessee etc. i doubt that he'd agree to that. those people that committed those horrible acts were supposedly " christian " i don't think that all christians are terrorists just because of a few rogue christians. why? because it is a known fact that christianity doesn't teach terrorism. don't try to fight your dad, just open his mind to new thoughts that may never have had.

Hi shannonx,
If you are convinced that Islam is the only True Religion and you are 100 percent sure.....is God you take faith declaration(shahada) because if you die as non-muslim you will go to Hellfire(May Allah avoid us from Hellfire) because you knew the truth but you didnt take it.If u take the Islamic creed(shahada) and let say you die immediately you are going straight to paradise which is eternal....because when you accept the truth Allah forgive your sins no matter how big or small sins u have commited because one of the attribute of Allah is Most Merciful .He doesnt need a person to be cruisified in order to forgive ur sins.
Regarding your parents, you dont have to tell your parents that you are muslim.Even at the begginig you have to explain what is Islam. If yourself you become a muslim that will be enough, because they will notice that you have become more good, obedient, respectfull woman...they will certainly notice big positive change in you and they will find out and they will be happy for it....because of your transformation .
After taking shahada learn more about Islam it will increase your faith and also you will be able to answer questions put across to you either by your family or friends or any other non-muslim.
Dont be afraid or shy to call your local mosque because they have recieved many people like you,you are not the first one.

I live you with the following clips of Ahmad Deedat.

Greetings from Manchester,United Kingdom.

You can say the shahada to yourself in your head or out loud , it does not matter because remember Allah is the All-Knower, All-Seer, He knows what is inside all of our hearts. It is BEST to do it in front of other Muslims, especially at the masjid, because you receive alot of warm hugs and appreciation. It's a different feeling for you and others, trust me.

May Allah make things easier for you to come
