is music better than quran recitation?

i was just thinking about listening to the recitation of the quran and listening to music. i remember a long time ago when the verses of the quran just seemed like jibberish to me. but the verses from 2pac and biggie made clear sense to me. when i came to learn that music was haram in islam, i didn't quite understand it. maybe because i loved music way too much in order for me to understand it. i once heard a scholar mention that listening to music deadens your heart to the recitation of the quran. i didn't believe that then, but i do today.

initially, i was trying to do both, listening to quran and music. the music was overpowering me, i would sing the songs long after they had finished playing. i would be moved to tears at hearing someone sing about their lost love. yet the ayahs of the quran was just some guy reciting in a language that i didn't speak. i didn't try to remember the ayah, and none of the beautiful verses ever brought forth a single teardrop. that was because the music had me desensitized.

the more and more conviction that i built up on the fact that music was haram, the more and more i began to recite, read, and ponder the ayahs of the quran. i do recite beautifully alhamdulillah, but when i hear the ayahs i can't help but to cry. but when i hear music, it's just noise to me. it has no place in my heart. that's what the scholar said would happen, when one lets the quran into their hearts, music just becomes noise. non muslims can't really see this. but muslims can. the shaytan doesn't want us to listen to and ponder over the ayahs of the quran. the songs of 50 cent and others are the verses of the devil's holy book.

in conclusion, i've come to realize that we really can't do both.

Jazak Allahu khayran Brother (may Allah SWT reward you).

May Allah SWT grant you to be amongst those who memorize the Quran entirely, and are told in the Hereafter: "Read, advance in status and recite as you used to do in the world, for your status will be commensurate with the last aayah that you recite."

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“It will be said to the companion of the Qur’aan (i.e., the one who memorized and studied it): "Read, advance in status and recite as you used to do in the world, for your status will be commensurate with the last aayah that you recite."

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2914; he said this is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. Al-Albaani said in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, no. 2329, it is hasan saheeh. Also narrated by Abu Dawood, 1464).

Salaam,

What a good example for those who are hooked to music. The take home message should be: If you can do it, then anyone can!

Sometimes we just need the motivation of others. These days teenagers are only concerned about what their peers think and not what Allah Ta'allah thinks of them. Peer pressure is such a dominating thing.

MashaAllah brother. May Allah Ta'allah guide us all on the straight path and rectify our Imaan, Ameen.

Wasalaam.

How wonderful subhanallah.
Barak Allahu Khair . . .
Its so frustrating to see our Ummah so engaged with all kinds of music.
May Allah (SWT) bless our surroundings with the receitation of Quran & guide us with it.Ameen:tti_sister:

I can also testify to the fact that once you let go of music you begin to develop a love for the quran. I used to be passionate about listening to music and would never even listen to the quran or open it. Now since I have stopped listening to it I have a love for memorizing, listening to and reciting quran.
Also Imam Ibn Taymiyyah said regarding the person, whose habit is to listen to music, "His state of emotions becomes less passionate when he hears the Qur'aan. On the contrary, when he listens to instruments of the devil (music), he dances a lot. If the prayer is established, he either prays while sitting down or performs it as fast as when the roaster picks seeds. He dislikes listening to the Qur'aan and does not find beauty in it while reciting it. He has no taste for the Qur'aan and feels no love for it or pleasure when it is read. Rather, he finds pleasure if he listens to Mukaa' or Tasdiyah. These are satanic pleasures and he is among those whom Allaah mentioned in the Ayah, And whosoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allaah), We appoint for him Satan to be a companion for him. [43:36]." [Awliyaa' Ar-Rahman].
