Opinion: Religion in public schools??

Ok, finally a place I want opinions.

Do you think religion should be taught in public schools? Give reasons why or why not...

just curious. And mainly towards this I'm thinking about the U.S. ... would it be a good idea, or not, and before highschool/university as well, when these are mainly just turned into clubs, or religious organizations...

I have that in my high school ..I am in my last year...we are generally taught that muslim women are oppressed and they show only the parts of christianity, that they also like. It is just HORRIBLE!

for religious studies there are private schools even for muslims.

In the school system that I teach in private funds pay for religious instruction. They have " Bible class". I am trying to get a Comparative Religion class going.
I do believe in religious instruction in school. It assists with discipline. There are never fights or suspensions from the Bible class. The students behave. The female students do not misbehave as much. The boys always use good manners.
Education without religious instruction is empty.

that is interesting, sounds more like sociology etc. however in Denmark they are different...here they think their values are the only right and they think muslims are barbaric. Of course not all Danish people do, but from what i have experienced THEY PITY ME? They think I am some young woman treated like a second class citizen, that I am uneducated, can't speak the language. When I proove the opposite they get scared. The problem is the propaganda as you mentioned and people obviously only show islam from the media's point of view not from the actual point (the one of the Quran and the Sunnah).

Im not in US so...I'll give a Brit's persepective

To be honest, Im not sure, it all depends on the quality and content of the Religious education, aswell as the relative effect of it compared to the influence of a secular society. I gave up Religious studies at school age..14, but up and till then we had only covered the main aspects of christianity....and evolution for some reason . The miniscule bit we learned about Islam was... pathetic.

Talking about religion was considered like a joke - the class never really took it seriously, I remember once requesting the Adhan be switched off, due to the fact people were sniggering at it.

Other times though, I can say it was interesting, being the only Muslim there and being asked questions which weren't always entirely stupid and exasperating at that age...I guess. Lol.

Isnt Islam theocratic? I thought it was, religion and state are not separate according to Islam...so religion should be taught.

In America you've got a huge problem on your hands! American Fascists - The Christian Right.... brainwashing the kiddies to give their blood for the saviour...or you get these crazy evolutionists - hang on - Dawkins is British! woah... theyre everywhere.

One thing for sure though, they shouldnt stop teaching evolution.... I truly relished in asking my teacher '...are you a monkeys uncle?'

In the US one of the oldest Muslim schools is under attack. The Islamic Saudi Academy has two campuses in the DC area. There is a lot of commotion going on. I understand that many congressmen feel the ISA is not an American educational institution and they can go in and confiscate the textbooks. Something about teaching fundamental Islam.
I do not know what is going on with the Muslim school in Brookly, NY but it may be under the watchful eyes of the feds. At this time I do not know if they are holding classes at the ISA's.

Yes. Many other countries have a separate RS class. Some schools have a religions unit in their world history courses but it's impossible to go in depth in any religion. I'm completely for it as long as the teachers are impartial and don't try to convert students to any one religion - give the information and facts about the religions. I'd also like to see them teach world religions and not Islam, Judaism and Christianity, which is how it was in my class.

I agree, in this world religion is a huge thing. If they can't taught their children in pulic schools than who will. There was a professor in Finland who has strong opinion about this issue and he thought that religion is a great deal nowadays and children should be taugh how to communicate about religious issues and should at least know the basics about religion. That's how i feel, oh and sorry for the bad english.

i would vote a yes
we should have religion taught in schools, as mentioned by my two muslim friends above. every child needs discipline and we do not get that unless we are taught the values of religion,
split classes in different religion groups and teach! (reduce some from the unemployed list you know) we have to get teachers who teach islam,hindi, sikism, jewish or any other religion not just a class of comparative religion.

:salam2: i think many factors are involved regarding the religious education in public schools...its effectiveness and significance may change from place to place...from country to country depending upon a typical atmosphere prevailing that region.well i think it shouldn't be!!...muslim homes and study circles in masjids and books and material by scholors(ulama) based on authentic sources (Qur'an and sahih hadith's must be enough for building up religion for any and for every muslim....and ALLAH knows best.

Yes, for those students who are not Muslim to learn about Islam and also for those Muslim student's whose parents are not doing a good job!

Certainly, as people aware of Islam, it is our duty to raise our kids upon Islam properly.

Personally, I went to schools where most the students were Christian. It did not effect me at all. Also, it was a boys only school.

We were taught Religious Education lessons and on many occasions the teacher allowed me to teach the class about Islam. That was from age 11-16. Even in my primary school, for a couple of weeks I remember I was given chance to teach the fellow children about Islam.

If a child's parents have not taught them anything, than obviously that would have been able to do the same. Instead, they would just have to rely on non-Muslim teacher teaching whatever is in the National Curriculum.

In Secondary School, we had really good history lessons. Although the teacher was head of the Christian society in the school, he actually gave very positive lessons about Islam. Teaching how Muslims were not barbaric and about our great discoveries and civillisation.

Infact, if I had children here in UK, I do not think my first priority would be to get them into an "Islamic School. I have seen the quality of teaching there. It is very sub-par.

I think in UK, most of the "Islamic schools", are simply setup as businesses, with third rate teaching and the students have very bad manners.

Better schools are the Grammar schools which select students based on tests and which are often single sex schools. Its parents responsibility make sure that their children are raised with good Islamic values and are strong Muslims. It is important for Muslims to be educated well in Deen and also in Dunya. But, the most important thing is for us to have Islam as our number one priority.
