Asalaamualaykum,

Well this is interesting...

Pakistan court orders ears and noses to be cut off

A Pakistani court has ordered that two men have their ears and noses cut off, as punishment for doing the same to a woman who refused to marry one of them.

The two brothers were found guilty of kidnapping 20-year-old Fazeelat Bibi, one of their cousins, in September.

The judge in Lahore also sentenced them to life in prison.

Sentence was passed on Monday under a rarely invoked Islamic law dating from the 1980s. In the past similar sentences have been revoked on appeal.

'Eye for an eye'

Government prosecutor Ehtisham Qadir said the punishment had been awarded in accordance with the Islamic principle of "an eye for an eye".

Sher Mohammad and Amanat abducted Fazeelat Bibi as she returned home from work at a brick kiln in the Raiwind area of Lahore, the court heard.

"They put a noose around her neck, and then cut off her ears and nose," Mr Qadir told the BBC.

Three alleged accomplices are still being sought by police.

The crime was committed after Fazeelat Bibi's parents refused to give her hand in marriage to Sher Mohammad, Mr Qadir said.

Islamic laws were introduced in Pakistan during the military regime of General Ziaul Haq in the 1980s.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says punishments prescribed under the laws have rarely been awarded, and never carried out.

Pakistani human rights activists have long campaigned for more to be done to stop attacks against women, which often include facial disfigurement.

However, they also disagree with the type of punishment handed out in Lahore, correspondents say.

Islamic prinicple of 'eye for an eye'...isn't that christianity?

^ No, christianity is ''turn the other cheek''

What a horrific story, Audhbillaah, may they get what they deserve.

It was actually Hamarabi's code of law that first wrote down "an eye for an eye." But either way, sounds just to me. I would've snetenced the men to execution given their actions caused the mother of the victim to die of a heart attack, that would've been just.

I'm almost definitely sure ''an eye for an eye'' is quoted in the bible, I remember from highschool. It does also say ''turn the other cheek'', but that's basically a contradiction.

Irrespective of the punishment, (which I more or less agree with), I've just never heard this saying in Islam before. :)

I understand you sister. To be honest i'm (pleasantly) surprised that the court actually took action and were not bought out or anything. Alhamdolilah.

Perhaps that is why country is in the situation it is, in many ways. We want to see more (and more) Islamic laws in practise, instead of this corruption.

Well, this sounds very just to me. Though I don't understand why the human activists disagreed with this punishment handed out to them both. How else would some people understand and fear the consequences?

Pakistan could be so great, if only they brought more Islamic laws into practice, as you say. The solutions are there, just no one to implement them, that's the problem. *Sigh* :(

assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Im suprised with some comments here. This is in the Qur'an. It is also a proof against the Christians and the Jews who have abandoned the Shari'ah.

Surah Al Ma'idah 5:44-47

44. Verily, We did send down the Taurât (Torah) [to Mûsa (Moses)], therein was guidance and light, by which the Prophets, who submitted themselves to Allâh's Will, judged the Jews. And the rabbis and the priests [too judged the Jews by the Taurât (Torah) after those Prophets] for to them was entrusted the protection of Allâh's Book, and they were witnesses thereto. Therefore fear not men but fear Me (O Jews) and sell not My Verses for a miserable price. And whosoever does not judge by what Allâh has revealed, such are the Kâfirûn (i.e. disbelievers - of a lesser degree as they do not act on Allâh's Laws[]).

45. And We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if anyone remits the retaliation by way of charity, it shall be for him an expiation. And whosoever does not judge by that which Allâh has revealed, such are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong*!doers - of a lesser degree).

46. And in their footsteps, We sent 'Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), confirming the Taurât (Torah) that had come before him, and We gave him the Injeel (Gospel), in which was guidance and light and confirmation of the Taurât (Torah) that had come before it, a guidance and an admonition for Al-Muttaqûn (the pious ).

47. Let the people of the Injeel (Gospel) judge by what Allâh has revealed therein. And whosoever does not judge by what Allâh has revealed (then) such (people) are the Fâsiqûn (the rebellious i.e. disobedient (of a lesser degree) to Allâh.

Yes, I know that an "eye for an eye" was firstly expressed in the Torah. But the Torah was an oral tradition for thousands of years. Hammurabi actually was the first to codify the law into a written and posted form for the law of the land. No doubt he used the laws he had been educated in while doing so.

I had grown up thinking it was a pure Torah law but was explained otherwise while studying ancient civ in undergrad.

Imagine living with your ears and nose cut off. Can a person actually survive that? I agree completely with it, though.
