Question for the Brothers....

(I would post this on the Brothers section but that place is so dead you walk in and all you hear is crickets...)

Asalaamu alaikum ...

Brothers, do you cover your head when you pray? I know that its a requirement for our sisters but for men its not really a "requirement" though it is considered a polite.

If yes, what do you use? A gutra/shmaag? A kufi? A baseball cap?

Just a curiousity thing here...

Thanks!
D.

There is no authentic evidence that I'm aware of that says it's required. If you habitually wear a cap you can pray with it on.

In fact, one hadeeth reports that the prophet, peace be upon him, was wearing a cap (Qulunsuwa) to prayer but when he dropped for prostration, he removed it. It's not clear why he did. It could be that he did not want the cap to come between his forehead and the ground, but that's just a guess.

Thank you but I was asking if the brothers DID. Not if it was required. I knew that part :).

i think you are talking about the incident where prophet (peace be upon him) did it as the ground was very hot to place forhead for prostration.

Assalamu alaikum brother!

I used to wear a hat for prayers only, but did not like wearing it otherwise. Then I questioned myself one day "why I should dress in a way that is undesirable to me when I present myself to Allah?"

So, I dont wear a hat or any other head covring for prayers anymore.

As others have mentioned it's not required and isn't compulsory.

Yes, I alomst always wear a kufi or topi when praying.

Brother, we are advised to change our way of life according to what Prophet's sunnah? He's been reported to wear it to cover his hair, so perhaps we can change our likes and dislikes a bit as well. Insha'Allah. Moreover, wearing one whilst only praying might come under the category of making special arrangements for prayer, just like putting Itar on for Jummah Salaah.

As-salaamu `alaykum

I agree. We should actually be standing before Allaah in the best and most modest of our dress, and a kufi/taqiyyah/topi/cap or an `imaamah would be ideal. As oppose to taking it off, I actually try to wear mine at least for prayer, providing I was wearing it sometime before during the day.

In wearing particular headgear we are emulating the Prophet, sall-Allaahu `alayhi wasallam, his companions and the salaf, pretty much all of them.

Was-salaam

Thank you for your replies, brothers... I try to wear a cap when I can, but I have a head the size of a 1972 Volkswagon Beetle so its hard to find any that fit. I do have a taghiya that fits though, and I usually wear that. The knitted kufis that I have creep slowly up my head and when I do sujood they pop off so I don't even bother :)

I find that most of the brothers at my masjid who cover their heads are either the South Asian brothers (Pakistan, Afghanistan etc) or converts. The Arabic brothers do not cover unless they're Saudi and they use the ghutra or shmaag.

Anyway it was only for academic purposes. Thanks again :)
