Questions need help

As salamo alaikome to all my brothers and sisters at TTI. I hope you are all in good health and Iman.

My fiancee is a born Muslim and I of course am a recent revert. We have had a few conflicts of opinion and we decided to ask on TTI since most of you are so knowledgable and always have good advice.

1) Is it ok to perform wudu in the nude or must you be dressed for prayer before performing wudu?

He thinks you have to be dressed for the prayer before performing wudu but in my opinion that would be much too difficult since I must wear hijab and jilaba or some sort of clothing that covers the entire body to pray. I thought it is ok to perform wudu even if you are naked but he insists Im wrong about that.

2) Is it even necessary to perform wudu if you just did a full ghusl???

He said I have to perform wudu before taking ghusl which is strictly for the ghusl then after taking ghusl I have to get dressed for prayer and then perform wudu again for the prayer. I was under the impression that the ghusl itself in place of wudu is sufficient.

3) If a normal person who has no medical problems is traveling is it ok to break the fast if they travel more than 2 hours? We travelled yesterday from our home to his parents house which is about a 3 to 4 hour trip and I broke the fast to do the travel which he said is ok since Im diabetic but its not ok for him to break the fast for the same travel since he has no medical condition and he said if he broke the fast for that trip he would have to fast an additional 2 months after Ramadan for breaking the fast voluntarily with no good reason. I thought you can break the fast for the travel and just make up the one day of fasting at the end of Ramadan.

These are things that come up between us which need answers because he has lived his whole life with certain rules that I believe are wrong according to Islam. Please if you could give proof with your answers that would be so helpful. I know my brothers and sisters here at TTI will have the answers I need even if it proves I am the one who is wrong. May Allah forgive me if I told him something wrong and Alhamdulillah he wont listen to me without proof.

Assalamou Alikom Warahmatou Allah,

Sister I am not a scholar but I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

1) Is it ok to perform wudu in the nude or must you be dressed for prayer before performing wudu?
Unlike praying, there is no requirement to be fully dressed when you perform woudu.

2) Is it even necessary to perform woudu if you just did a full ghusl???
Yes you are right sister, after performing a full gusul (for whatever reason) you do not need to perform woudu. Actually gusul is much better since you clean your whole body. Your fiancé is way to strict and I do not think he is right.

3) If a normal person who has no medical problems is traveling is it ok to break the fast if they travel more than 2 hours?
If fasting is way too hard for you during the travel, which is the case I guess since you are diabetic, then you should break your fast and fast another day in the future.
For a normal person, I can not say. It depends on how he is traveling (walking, by car, by plane...). For me I wouldn't break the fast if I'll travel for only 2 hours by car, by train or by plane since that is not too difficult.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam.

Wa alaikome salam and jazakallah khairan dear brother for your answer to my questions. I still would prefer to have proof of answers since my fiancee is one who believes only what is written in hadith or Quran or by the scholars. If anyone has some proof please share with me.

As salamo alaikome sister Aapa and jazakallah khairan for your good answer which proves me wrong hahahaha but I am so happy to get actual proof of the correct way to perform wudu. Another question was if wudu is even necessary if ghusl is performed. And the last question about traveling and breaking the fast.

If anyone can answer please show proof as sister Aapa did.

1) First of all, I want like to remind you of the interaction between you and your fiancee should be compliant with the legislation of interaction between sexes. I am writing about this because I read in your post about 'our home' and 'us travelling to his parent's house'.

Though you are both engaged, you are still *non-mahram* and a stranger to him. You should be aware of that. Being engaged does not allow, a relaxation in intermingling of sexes or spending time together. It is preferable if elders are present (in your situation) while you discuss the details of your marriage.

There is enough time about knowing eachother after marriage. Right now, you should only talk about important issues about compatibility, judging commitment to religion, his character and means to support you and you son.

You are not allowed to stay together or travel together before you complete your marriage contract. This might be taken in to consideration in many muslim countries unfortunately, but it is no doubt a great transgression and prohibited in legislation of Islam.

From the questions you have put forward, these things are better discussed by the couple after marriage. Right now, there should be a greater degree of shyness and restraint in discussing such matters openly. Things important to spending lifetime together are of greater importance and should be discussed and resolved first. Again, this has to be done in presence of elders and other people and not in seclusion.

2) The answers with regards to wudhu Vs ghusl lack the mention of an important point.

In case of junub (impurity) due to secretion of fluids from the body, a ghusl is necessary in all circumstances. The ghusl suffices and there is no need to perform an additional wodhu.

However, in normal circumstances the majority of scholars say that you have to perform wodhu even after ghusl. I have heard this myself on Ask Huda Tv from Sh Muhammah Salah. I will link a clip if I can find it. You can find this information in any authentic book that contains rulings with regards to purification (taharah).

3) As for fasting while travelling.. You can watch the response of our scholars on this topic . There is a difference of opinion in this case.

Assalamu alaykum

1) Is it ok to perform wudu in the nude or must you be dressed for prayer before performing wudu?

There is nothing in Quran and Sunnah that prohibits this. Halal is clear and haram is clear. For someone to prohibit something, they have to have an authentic hadith from the prophet :saw:.

2) Is it even necessary to perform wudu if you just did a full ghusl???

If a person performs Ghusl according to the sunnah of the prophet :saw: than woodu was done while performing ghusl therefore, person is not required to perform woodoo after performing it during ghusl. One needs to be careful not to touch their private area with bare hands as it nullifies woodoo again. Please see further below for more info.

3) If a normal person who has no medical problems is traveling is it ok to break the fast if they travel more than 2 hours?

If you have a medical excuse that traveling will cause a hardship to your health, than you have an excuse to break fast not partially but fully. As Allah sva says in QURAN in surah Baqarah.

184. (Fasting) for a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed number (Should be made up) from days later. For those who can do it (With hardship), is a ransom, the feeding of one that is indigent. But he that will give more, of his own free will,- it is better for him. And it is better for you that ye fast, if ye only knew.

As far as breaking fast while traveling when one is not sick or has no hardship while traveling, then there is a great debate amongst scholars. Some say that a person is ok to break fast due to the statement "or on journey" Allah didnt say if it is a hardship while ur traveling "than u can break fast" but He just mentioned journey. However, others say that one should fast if there is no hardship. Both scholars bring valid proofs to support their views. Please read further more down here.

Also, about a sick person fasting, please read this.

wa 'alaykum salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

I'm sorry ukhti, I don't have much time to look things up, but it seems most of your questions were answered inshaAllaah?

I'm afraid the previous fatwa on performing wudu' had to be removed. It was due to the fact that we don't accept any fataawa by Faraz Rabbani on TTI. He has certain aqeedah issues, among them making it permissible to make dua' to graves of Muslims and such which necessitates that altogether in general we don't allow his rulings.

However I found another one which addresses this question by reputable shyookh.

Ruling on doing wudoo’ naked
The man’s ‘awrah is from the navel to the knees, so what is the ruling on doing wudoo’ naked or wearing shorts that do not cover the knees?

Praise be to Allaah.

His wudoo’ is valid, because uncovering the ‘awrah or wearing shorts does not invalidate his wudoo’, but it is haraam for him to uncover his ‘awrah in front of anyone except his wife or concubine (a slave woman who belongs to him and with whom he is permitted to have intercourse).

Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 5/235.

Now if someone does not feel comfortable making wudu' in such a manner, then of course it is not 'obligatory'! But the fact of the matter is that we cannot make haraam something within the Deen unless we have Daleel for it, and this was never specified by the Messenger of Allaah :saw: that making it without clothes invalidates the wudu'. Here is a list of things which do: What invalidates the wudu'

Thus this is the opinion I would follow for this regard... And Allaah knows best
