reminder of death

as a muslim, i go to the masjid as often as possible, but after all of this time being a muslim; i have never taken part of the janazah i.e. funeral prayers of islam. i didn’t know the dear sister personally, but may Allah SWT be pleased with her. seeing her covered coffin it made me not think so much of her death, but rather it made me think of my own. it made me think that the sister that died didn’t know it was going to be her day. no of us know our day. so it brings to our own minds: “ are we ready to die today, are we ready to face our Lord? “ i don’t know if the sister will enter jannah or not, but her death calls to remind me of why i should try so hard to be ready, by living a life pleasing to Allah SWT and striving to gain entrance to the jannah al firdaus.

so often, i hear many muslims, especially the young ones; talking about how they’ll repent when they’re older or how they’ll go to hajj when they’re older. they never see the fact that they including myself, we are not guaranteed to have or next breath. so it is so important that we use the time that we have left on this earth to make sure that we do all that we can to please Allah SWT so that we may be ready for jannah. i’m reminding myself before i remind others

Jazak Allah khairfor this reminder

. `Abdullah bin `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) took hold of my shoulders and said, "Be in the world like a stranger or a wayfarer.'' Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) used to say: When you survive till the evening do not expect to live until the morning; and when you survive till the morning do not expect to live until the evening. While in good health (do good deeds) before you fall sick; and while you are alive (do good deeds) before death strikes.
[Al-Bukhari].

Jazak Allah khair. I think we do need for such reminder every day.

May Allah bless my late dad's soul and be merciful for him. He used to remind us and himself of death regularly. He used to tell us the prophet saying, " the more you remember death, the stronger your faith is."

I passed by a cemetery yesterday, not too far from my house actually just a 5-10minute walk in a direction I do not normally go and I actually wanted to post a thread about how I felt. I was not in a car, I was walking and actually stopped to look, it has a really low brick wall around it somewhere just over my waist. The grass was unkempt and tombstones stood out out of the overgrown grass. I heard this overwhelming not really fear but close to it. Thinking that one day it could actually be me lying in a deserted and lonely place with nothing except my deeds I was taken aback.

I started imagining what sort of lives these people might have had, maybe loving family, all the material things money can buy or having all the 'fun' in this world not preparing for the hereafter and now those they loved around them are now caring on with their lives and they are just a memory.

Their husbands/wives are now married to someone else? Now that is a hard one for me to imagine as well lol, my hubby actually married and starting a 'new' life with someone else after I am gone. But such is the reality of life and we should not please anyone except Allah otherwise we will surely be the losers.

Considering it was a non-muslim graveyard and you know how they like to decorate graves and make sure the grass is kept kinda like a respect or remembrance of their loved one but this particular one is very unkempt implying that even the ones who you thought you loved and pleased have forgotten all about you. Now imagine the torment in the grave with no going back to set things straight and their day of Judgement has already begun.

Inshallah will probably take regular walks in that direction to constantly remind me of death so that I can reconsider my priorities in life and make me appreciate what Allah has given me and to humble myself a bit more.

Let us fear Allah and constantly remember death as it is surely the destroyer of pleasures. There is a hadith that says something to that effect.

Jazaakallah khairen for the reminder...

I too would like to keep reminding myself of death and expect to die tomorrow, but having a child and living day to day life sometimes makes us forget.
We start dreaming and having hopes of being alive when our children grow up and start their own lives...sometimes takes away thoughts of death other times even if we remember it is like a silent breeze that passes through without much effect.
I am the sort of person that collects a lot of memories like little stones, seeds or books from my student days, I have been thinking of letting go of these things as they are sort of like hording things which I would never practically need and it takes up space(especially books), but I keep on procrastinating as all of these are memories...some even of many non muslim classmates whom I do not have much contact with...
I think maybe if I stopped collecting "material" memories maybe I will start preparing more for the Hereafter than now.
Every night I always make a promise to myself to be a better muslim but during the daily life I tend to pay attention to the obligatory duties like prayers and some recitation and some dhikr but I do wish to do so much more..............

Salam sister Umzaina,

Its a practice for us in Malaysia that we have gather & pray follow by reading zikir, surah al fatihah, yassin for remember family, relatives who is passed away.

Hadis Abu Hurairah said :Rasulullah s.a.w memperkatakan mengenai hari Jumaat.

Means Rasulluah said friday is a good time for a muslim can wish for his prayes of what he want from Allah swt.Allah willing that he can get what he wish for.
so we read surah yassin.

Means - Allah swt blessing those who read yassin, confessions, sins will removed, read yassin to the ppl who is nazak will get easy to see Allah swt, light punishments from the grave,80 blessing those who read yassin and Allah swt will give what he wish for.

7000 angels will hear the confessions if read surah yassin on friday night or house in paradise -jannah will be given for those read on friday.

Alhamdullah..
:salam2:

A very close friend of my family passed away before yesterday while he was fasting. May Allah (swt) grant hum Jannah, and have mercy upon him. A few hours before his death, he was laughing and joking with his wife.

He went to pick up his children from the nursery, came home and spent a lovely evening with his wife and children. Suddenly, just before the iftaar time, he felt death approaching, within minutes he returned to Allah (swt).

He was in his early thirties I guess, very healthy man mashallah, and funny. Subhanallah, we can be healthy and feeling great, but death doesnt wait for no man, healthy, unhealthy, young, old, male, female. Ina lilah wa ina iliahi rajee'oon. i have taken part of the janazah of many people, close members of the family, closest friends, and other people that I dont know them personally.

Its an eye opener when taking part in Jannazah, you'll realize how short this life is, how deep is that hole, you will be alone there, no one can help you no more, except your good deeds, and children who are in the right path, who will make dua for us. Therefore, only our deeds can make our graves bright and comfortable, or darkness with punishment, wal eyatho bellah.

Allahuma aa'atina fel dunya hasanah, wa fel a'akhirati hasanah wa qina'a atha'ab al naar. May Allah (swt) make our best deeds the last.. Amiin, Amiin, Amiin..

Wassalam Alykom..

Ruling on reading Qur’aan at the graveside and putting roses and fragrant herbs on the grave

Question:
We see some people reciting Qur’aan at the grave of their deceased loved one when they visit, and others putting some roses and fragrant herbs on the grave. What is the ruling on that?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

With regard to reciting Qur’aan when visiting the grave, this is something which has no basis in the Sunnah.

It is not prescribed in Islam, and the fact that it is not prescribed is supported by the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Do not make your houses into graveyards, for the Shaytaan flees from a house in which Soorat al-Baqarah is recited.” This was narrated by Muslim and al-Tirmidhi from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah. This indicates that graves are not the place for reading Qur’aan, hence the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) encouraged reading Qur’aan in our houses and told us not to make them like graveyards where it is not read. Another hadeeth indicates that they (graveyards) are not the place for prayer (salaah) either. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Pray in your houses and do not make them like graves.” This was narrated by Muslim and others from Ibn ‘Umar. A similar report was narrated by al-Bukhaari, who included it in a chapter entitled Baab Karaahat al-Salaah fi’l-Maqaabir (Chapter on it being disliked to pray in graveyards); thus he indicated that the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar could be understood to mean that it is makrooh to pray in graveyards. Similarly the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah may be understood to mean that it is makrooh to read Qur’aan in graveyards. There is no difference between praying and reading Qur’aan in this regard. Abu Dawood said in his Masaa’il (p. 158): “I heard Ahmad being asked about reading Qur’aan at the graveside. He said, ‘No [that should not be done].’”

It is not prescribed in Islam to put “aas” leaves (a kind of tree) or fragrant herbs or roses on the grave, because this is not what the salaf did, and if it was good, they would have done it before us. Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) said: “Every bid’ah (innovation) is a going astray, even if the people think it is good.” (Narrated by Ibn Battah in al-Ibaanah ‘an Usool al-Diyaanah, 2/112; al-Laakaa’i in al-Sunnah, 1/21, a mawqoof report with a saheeh isnaad).

We ask Allaah to bestow mercy upon the deceased Muslims. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

:salam2:

As Muslims we always have something to be very thankful for and that is our Divine religion. I am not saying go easy in this life and dont worry becasue we are Muslims, No. Jannah has a very big price to pay and it all comes from devotion, sincerity, prosperity in the Cause of Allah. Death is very hard to comprehend. All I see when I hear that word is mere darkness and the obvious absence of life. We are very far away from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad :saw2: . There is so much more to Islam that we are still not even aware of.. Apologies.. let me speak for myself. I pray that every Muslim whether they are on the straight path in this world or not, gain entry into Jannah with the blink of the eye... Aameen. I pray that all those Muslims who have passed away find comfort and less Ahzaab in the grave and hereafter.. Aameen.
