Saudi Arabia on Monday stepped up pressure on the Syrian government to implement an Arab League plan to end its deadly violence against protesters, while the UK pledged Syrian opposition that world powers will do as much as they can to turn up the heat on President Bashar al-Assad.

Following a Saudi cabinet meeting chaired by Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, a statement urged Damascus to “hold fully to its commitments” in accepting a League plan to end the crisis, and hailed the pan-Arab bloc’s efforts to do so.

The statement, published by the state news agency SPA, underlined “the importance of ensuring the protection of Syrian civilians and stopping the killings and acts of violence.”

On Sunday, the League said Arab foreign ministers are to hold crisis talks on Syria in Cairo on Thursday.

They are to discuss the next steps after the Arab bloc rejected amendments suggested by Damascus to a document outlining plans for a 500-strong delegation to monitor the violence in Syria, an Arab League source said.

Under a November 2 deal with the League, Syria was given 15 days to pull back troops from cities at the centre of anti-government protests, release detainees, allow free movement for observers and media, and negotiate with the opposition.

The League under the deal was to send 500 members of human rights groups, media representatives and military observers to Syria to monitor the situation and help implement the peace plan.

A fresh deadline to end the bloodshed or face sanctions expired on Saturday, with no compliance from Assad’s security forces.
UK Pressure

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary William Hague held talks in London with representatives of Syrian opposition groups on Monday, intensifying British contacts with them just days after he appointed a former ambassador to lead London’s coordination with Assad’s opponents.

“I think the Assad regime will find that more and more governments around the world are willing to work with the opposition ... as part of the increasing pressure on this regime,” Hague said after the meeting.

He said international pressure had already been ratcheted up on Syria, pointing to European Union sanctions on Syria’s oil exports. “We are working this week on a further round of sanctions which I hope we can agree next week,” Hague added.

An EU diplomat said that at a meeting in Brussels on Monday, EU states discussed extended sanctions on Syria expected to be agreed ahead of a meeting of foreign ministers on Dec. 1.

He said the sanctions were likely to target more individuals responsible for the violence and entities that support and fund the Syrian government, and to include a range of steps against the financial and banking sectors.

On top of the U.S. and European sanctions, Syria has alienated former ally Turkey and, in a dramatic deepening of its regional isolation, been suspended by the Arab League and threatened with Arab sanctions

Sister, I can't believe that you are backing Assad. In today's modern world, you can't even hide after killing a goose, this man killed many innocent civilians. I really can't take it. I don't care what UK or US will do, I don't like their intervention too. Arab league given good advise to Assad but this man is stubborn, he is power craze. It's better he resign before it too late.

Brother when Allah meant to create a muslim state, and spread it, He granted first a place for muslims Medina. We are loosing all of them. This is no more joke. And I care what USA and UK do to my brothers. They use Assad, but they will use anyone else instead of him. They simply uproot countries, and is their intervention that has caused more killings than internal problems. I do not know if these protesters are in rebellion for true religion. But I know one thing. Their leaders ARE NOT! They would have never found shelter in the ones (London GUY) that have destroyed mosques and muslims with big show off and pride. I will never be on their side. As for the goose thing that is true only for me and you for UKs and USAs they have killed the world and they don't hide. Now is new fashion. THEY VOW FOR MORE! I wish a true man of Allah will show these EVILS the place where they belong and take care of muslim ummah. Hope I have answered your questions. I belong to Allah only, but I think muslims are not showing the hikmah that they are gifted from Allah, so much praised in history. Never muslims have handed over their internal issues to outsiders, be they muslims, let alone kufar of worst kind. They are not even humans. Their best friends are DOGS and CATS!

Sister, I respect your opinion and accept your explanation. We have many students in Syria, they returned home and told how muslims sprayed with bullets in the mosque and killed in mass. They said media tell few Syrian being killed daily, actually hundred if not thousand being killed daily. Do you think it is nice to hear this kind of news? If I'm al-Assad, I will resign for good.

[salam ..the syrians are not handing over thier matters...to the west....
they are simply in the streets asking for help...they are in a desperate situation,,,sister you talk of thousands killed by us and uk,,,

but this man assad is killing thousands of innocent muslims...peaceful protestors, people going to prayer, men ,women and chidlren, and torturing them in the worst way

his followers act agaicnt the belief of islam, this man must be opposed...

assad has also helped keep israel safe all thse years...instead of protecting his border,he could have taken back what was part of his country,

he uses his military might to crush his own people ,why he never turned his might against the real enemy,,,

im sorry but im tired of people using hatred of the west, to make an exuse for such tyrants..

no problem let him masaccre his own people sunni muslims just as long as the west is not involved,,,

so why dont muslim countries act to protect these muslims,,,//....???
