Use modern information media to spread Islam’s message: Al-Asheikh

By P.K. ABDUL GHAFOUR - May 26, 2011

JEDDAH:
Islamic Affairs Minister Saleh Al-Asheikh has emphasized the need for utilizing modern information media including the Internet and FM radio stations to spread the message of Islam.

“FM radios with shortwave have been found more effective in propagating Islam,” the minister said, adding that it has been successfully used in African, East Asian and Southeast Asian countries.

“We can reach a large number of people through FM radios than satellite channels and at lesser cost,” he said and urged philanthropists to make use of this dynamic media for dawa work.

He said Islamic scholars in the Kingdom can give classes and lectures through the Internet, targeting audience in different parts of the world. “Many people all over the world wanted to know more about Islam.”

Al-Asheikh
also stressed the need to use social media such as Facebook and Twitter for Islamic propagation, saying the younger generation uses this media for communication and exchange information.

He expected satellite channels would slowly disappear within 10-15 years as people would shift their focus to the Internet. “So,
we should have a greater presence on the Internet and we should spend more money to develop this media,” the minister said.

Last Monday, Al-Asheikh launched a new website for Hadith named
www.alssunnahnet.com to highlight the life and teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The website also offers religious rulings and legislative consultations, which are answered by a group of specialist scholars.

That's right. FB from example, it can be used for dawah activities, unfortunately some ppl are more interested to discuss useless things in there...

FB has been deemed harm and banned by some scholars. I think this was in indonesia, and I agree with them. It should be banned where it is gone out of control. It should be banned in Pakistan and arab world all together. It's used for nothing but haram over there.

I agree, anyone has the right to buy radio time to spread whatever message they wish. That includes spreading the message of Islam, of other religions, or even of the 'useless things' Hard Rock Muslim refers to.

Don't know if it's a good thing or bad but an interesting article I read a while back. The saudi men used to harass women in the street like depraved lunatics. There's an interesting video of such depravity on youtube. But with the coming of the FB, all these depraved lunatics have gone online instead. Also, read that saudi girls there are going online to show of their bodies on the webcam for some attention. They cover their faces so no one can see them but show everything else for a shower of compliments among other things. It has done more damage than good in saudi society. This is what happens when you fail to educate your people and just force them to abide by you rules/laws. Educate them and they will self-censor and govern themselves, censor and govern them like little kids without proper education and they will find other venues to do as they please.

I agree with the learned scholars. I'm no body to dispute their fatwa. There are couple divorced because of FB. There are muslims sharing their videos and pictures without proper hijab. There are muslim women talking bad about their husband and vice versa. Perhaps we should have an Islamic FB or Twitter but yet again difficult to stop people joining and discuss or promote useless and nonsensical things.
