Who is your friend?

zainab bala

Allah is sufficient.
''Which friend is worthy of my love O commander of the faithful?'' He said, ''He who assists you when you remember to do what is right, and reminds you when you forger to do it.'' _ (Ali (RA), the 4th Khalif replying to a question).

The company we keep determines our actions and dispositions more than we can ever imagine. There are thousand of friends and comrades with whom we are acquainted. Whatever the place of socialization, something has brought us together. What is the quality that has endeared these two persons to each other?, people do not often ask themselves. What exactly is the basis of their friendship?

Experience has shown that a good percentage of intelligent men and women, when faced with this question find a safe haven in ''I dont know, I just love him''. or I simply think she is nice''. We do not pin down the affection to a particular virtue or virtues. However, if love would not be misplaced or abused, it must have its basis in certain qualities that are of benefit to both parties. How beautiful would this world be if we only fall in love with those who will assist us in doing good things and pester us when we seem to be forgetting them! If your friend does not ever see wrong in your actions, be wary of him. If you are planning to overinvoice a contract, and your friend provides the fake invoice, be wary of him.

There are seven whom Allaah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allaah's sake, meeting for that and parting upon that; a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but be says: 'I fear Allaah', a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allaah in private and so his eyes shed tears.'
