Yet they don't dress Islamically themselves. I always here it, in Jummah or even on these forums. The guys always seem to know everything about a woman wearing the hijab and will chastize her for not wearing it. Yet.....many men don't dress Islamicallly. Heck, I have a hard time identifying a Muslim man unless he has his wife with him. Why? (BTW, I'm a guy).

Maybe they are reminding, because they care? Maybe because there is so much fitna out there?
Maybe they don't dress according to the teachings of Islam, because they themselves are ignorant of it. Or some use the excuse that they don't need to grow a beard because it's only sunnah. (But there is differences of opinion about the beard).

But many, when confronted about, say, the beard use that excuse it's sunnah. But the same can't be use of hijab.

I know, because they use the excuse that hijab is mentioned in the Qur'aan, but the beard is not. However, the Prophet :saw: ordered the men to trim their mostache (sp?) and grow their beard. (Anyway, I'm not knowledgable but I follow the scholary opinion that the beard is obligatory and haraam to shave based on a book I've read). Also, the issue with covering the ankles - many brothers don't even do that either.

But is what the prophet commanded not obligatory either? You see the sort of one sidedness this goes? It's like saying Federal law says you can't kill. State law says you can't steal. Either crime, you're getting punished for. Sorry if that's a bad analogy

    aslam o aliakum

To be honest, there is no answer to your Question, as muslim men who dont wear islamically should be ashamed, there is no justification.

Inshallah, im just going to post the islamic clothing requirement and we all can better follow it

1st Requirement: What parts of the body are to be covered:

The first bit of guidance given in Islam describes the parts of the body which must be covered in public.
For women: In general, standards of modesty call for a woman to cover her body, particularly her chest. The Qur'an calls for women to "draw their coverings over their chests," and the Prophet Muhammad instructed believing women to cover their bodies except for their face and hands. Most Muslims interpret this to require headcoverings for women. Some Muslim women cover the entire body, including the face and/or hands.

For men: The minimum amount to be covered is between the navel and the knee.

    2nd Requirement: Looseness:

Islam also guides that clothing must be loose enough so as not to outline or distinguish the shape of the body. Skin-tight, body-hugging clothes are out, for both men and women. When in public, some women wear a cloak over their personal clothing as a convenient way to "hide their curves." In many predominantly Muslim countries, men's traditional dress is somewhat like a loose robe, covering from the neck to the ankles.

    3rd Requirement: Thickness:

The Prophet Muhammad once warned that in later generations, there would be people "who are dressed yet naked." See-through clothing is not modest, for either men or women. The clothing must be thick enough so that the color of the skin it covers is not visible, nor the shape of the body underneath.

    4th Requirement: Overall appearance:

The overall appearance of a person should be dignified and modest. Shiny, flashy clothing may technically meet the above requirements, but defeat the purpose of overall modesty.

    5th Requirement: Not imitating others:

Islam encourages people to be proud of who they are. Muslims should look like Muslims, and not like mere imitations of people of other faiths around them. Women should be proud of their femininity and not dress like men. And men should be proud of their masculinity and not try to imitate women in their dress. For this reason, Muslim men are forbidden from wearing gold or silk, as these are considered feminine accessories.

6th Requirement: Decent but not flashy:

The Qur'an describes that clothing is meant to cover our private areas, and be an adornment (Qur'an 7:26). Clothing worn by Muslims should be clean and decent, neither excessively fancy nor ragged. One should not dress in order to gain the admiration or sympathy of others.

    assalaam o alaykum,

simply; men dressing "unislamically" has less of a fitna to the society as a whole as does women dressing less "islamically"

if a man were to walk out of his house with his top off, then it would cause that big of a scene, but if a women was to walk out of her house with her top off, this would cause a HUGE scene/fitna...

Islamically speaking, the hijaab is more stressed on the women due to the fitna it causes...

Because it is easier to point out the faults of others than to fix yourself.

I find it rather disturbing that some men are so obsessively focused on how women dress.

    Salam brothers and sisters! :D

I haven't been here for a while- but it seems to be getting more heated. ;)
    Cool down everybody! :)

    hee hee!

Bro- people do that. Many Muslims are becoming weak in their beliefs, May Allah Guide us all. :(

It's important that men dress appropriatley as well as women- but it's more open for them. ( Not in a bad way)

By the way- the hadeeth about the " ankle thing" lol!

Males are forbidden to have their garments below their ankles, because it shows pride and ignorance, and also because it can pick up dirty things along the streets. ;)

Oh lol! Yeah- the term is " Low-riding"

    Salam!!!! :D

I was all set to answer this than I remembered:

“Not a word does he (or she) utter but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)” (Qur'an 50:18).

    and then this

Ecc 5:1 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
Ecc 5:2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
Ecc 5:3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.

And, of course my wise parents who said: "If you would keep you mouth shut you wouldn't get your foot stuck in it so often." :)

So, I think I will as we American's say "take the 5th." (as in 5th amendment to the constitution.)

Like someone said before it's a lot easier pointing out someone else's fault. But where I live I can say it's for the better of the community cuz lots of sisters aren't wearing hijab here. So there's good and bad reasons... I guess and true about not being to tell Muslim brothers exactly what my sis says she can't distinguish Muslims from hindus at her school...

    Weird times were living in....

    As Salamu 'Alaykum,

A scholar was once asked how he obtained such excellent character. He replied, "I listen to all criticism, especially from those who dislike me."

When I was a preacher, I used this example to teach individuals that they should listen to the message and not reject the message because of their feelings about the messenger.

Num 22:21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
Num 22:22 And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of the LORD placed himself in the way for an adversary against him. - Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him. -
Num 22:23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.
Num 22:24 Then the angel of the LORD stood in a hollow way between the vineyards, a fence being on this side, and a fence on that side.
Num 22:25 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall; and he smote her again.
Num 22:26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left.
Num 22:27 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she lay down under Balaam; and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.
Num 22:28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam: 'What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?'
Num 22:29 And Balaam said unto the ass: 'Because thou hast mocked me; I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.'
Num 22:30 And the ass said unto Balaam: 'Am not I thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy life long unto this day? was I ever wont to do so unto thee?' And he said: 'Nay.'
Num 22:31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.
    Num 22:32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him: 'Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is contrary unto me;
Num 22:33 and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.'

So, even though many of us men are like donkeys, hopefully, you will remember that Allaah uses whomever He wishes. In the Bible, Allaah often chose the weakest to humble the powerful.

There are plenty of sites which talk about hija for both men and women.
They speak about not wearing tight clothes, clothes of the other gender, clothes with designs during prayer. It mentions that The Prophet (Salla Alayhu Alayhi wa Sallam) didn't like the color yellow. And, so on. I personally started growing a beard the same day that I started to study Islam. But, in many professions and corporations a beard is not permitted. I would prefer my surgeon to be bald and hairless. Those working with food need to be especially careful about not allowing their hair to fall into the food of others. Since the beard is sunnah it is not allow to grow by some men because of employment. I personally, because of injuries which limit(ed) my activity for awhile to a power chair, am obese. I have a very hard time finding clothes. I have not yet be able to find Islamic clothes.

"O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). Thatis better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not annoyed..." (Qur'an 33:59)

"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands..." (Qur'an 24:30-31)

    Walaikum salam warahmatullah

I have seen this before and I think it is totally hypocritical. Expecting a woman to dress Islamically and no one bothers about men. I have seen some women with hijab and Niqab walking around with a husband in tight jeans which are below the ankle and no beard.

Anyway alhamdulillah the sisters are doing it for Allah's sake and the brothers who are walking around like non muslim men inshallah will be punished for it, so it is not the women who have something to lose but the men. Basically the men are helping these women go to paradise inshallah and not hell and the sisters will not be punished for the men's issues so no big deal.

The awrah for the men is from the navel to the knee so even if he goes outside topless he is not sinning.

Like others mentioned, it is easier to see the faults of others. Some men are just arrogant as well and just cannot come to terms that they have to conform to an Islamic way of dressing.

It is mandatory for MEN and WOMEN to cover and dress islamically. More for us because we are built differently from the man, but his awrah must be covered also. Something that identifies him as a muslim just as the hijab identifies us a muslimahs. Allah knows best.:hijabi:

@ Shaheerpak; thanks for the list! :)

Here too, I've seen at the beach women in full hijab while the men (their brothers, father, husband) wear speedo's into the sea

One guy even said that men don't have to abide by the rule of covering up, that it's only for women :(

We are to educate them that that isn't so, and at the ones who don't want to listen... well... can't do anything about that unfortunately. Just hope they will see the light in the end.

:salam2: there is no justification for a man to dress unIslamically but you cannot compare the beard with the hijaab as the two have not got the same level of obligation.

Men and women have been created with different natures and therefore have different level of awrah's which need to be covered. The women need to cover everything whereas the man from the navel to the knees.

However as you have correctly pointed out this does not give justification to any man to dress how they want and those who dress unislamically will be punished accordingly and those who dress like the kufaar will be raised up with those they imitated.

Also not all men should be painted with the same brush just like not all women should be. If some men have this attitude towards women then it does not mean all do.

There is a very big issue nowadays with many of our sisters who are unfortunatley treating the hijaab like a fashion accessory. They use the hijaab as an excuse to dress and wear how much make up they want.

They go out in flashy coloured hijaab with sparkley bits and pink and bright coloured hijaabs wearing the tightest clothes along with excessive make up. Even many sisters who wear niqaab beautify their eyes to such an extent and they think it is acceptable because they are wearing niqaab.

These practices are contrary to the purpose of hijaab and these sisters are clearly being decieved by shaythan so it is upto and our sisters who wear hijaab properly to educate and infornm them how to wear hijaab properly and the purpose and sacred meaning of the hijaab.

Unfortunatley this can be seen across the Muslim world as well as western world but there are also many sisters who wear the hijaab properly.

So it is upto the good Muslim men who dress properly to inform and educate those men who dress innappropriatley in the sameway it is upto those good Muslim women who dress properly to inform those who don't wear hijaab and those who don't wear hijaab properly. After that it is upto them for we will all be accountable for our own actions and the choices we made in this life.

    and Allah knows best

    :wasalam:
