Basically, there are two issues raised here.

1. Whether it is better that American soldiers committ suicide, or that they repent and ask Allah for forgiveness of their sins/crime.

I don't think so, anyone would disagree its is better that they repent and expose the one's who are really behind these actions (the big criminals in suits). Some of them have indeed spoken out against what is going out in Iraq and Afganistan.

Some have indeed accepted Islam, who knows others might follow. Don't forget Khalid bin Waleed, he indeed faught against the Muslims in battle of Badr, but later accpetd Islam.

2. Whether Soldiers are accountable/responsible for what they are doing.

Yes, indeed they are, after all, its there choice, no one is forcing them go and fight an illegal war. however, maybe amongst them are some who are indeed sincere and were lied into this war. So you blame individuals for there actions and not the group or community they belong to. Indeed if you look at the wording of the Quran it always say them, 'Some of them', 'Among them are people' or 'A party of them'

It is only Allah who knows what is inside the Heart of the person.

What you can do is make dua that Allah give them 'hidaya' (guidance). Remember the two umar's , they were hostile to Muslims and Islam. What did the Prophet (pbuh) do, he made dua to Allah swt that they guide atleast one Umar to Islam.

And Allah knows best!
