Assalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
Our Islaam is based purely upon the Qur'aan and Sunnah with the understanding of the early Muslims.
It is important to stick to the original sources, just as you have said.
Many Muslims, especially Revert Muslims, choose to teach themselves Islaam through books, lectures, videos, the internet. There are many problems to doing this that should be avoided. Without a proper teacher or a guide, one who has the combination of true knowledge and experience, the problems of the ego and desires can confuse and lead us all astray quite easily.
The one with "true knowledge" is the one who is dedicated to the original teachings of Islaam, that is purely from the Qur'aan and the authentic Sunnah. On top of that, it is important that they have the correct understanding. - We do not give our own understanding or "feelings" to what we think the Qur'an or the Sunnah means. We need to understand it exactly how the early Muslims understood it, for they were the ones who were closest to the Prophet Muhammad (salallahu alayhi wa salam) and his time.
Therefore, we should look to see what the noble scholars of our time say on issues,
