Important Question about becoming Muslim

Hey everyone.
I'm relatively new to this Turn To Islam, I have already introduced myself, and have been reading up on recent posts.
I am enjoying this site very much - it is very informative.

As you may or may not know, I am not Muslim. I am born Catholic, but not practicing because I do not agree with everything my religion stands for.
I study religion at my University, and have always been very interested in all religions of the world. Currently I have been putting much thought into the religion of Islam. I do agree with many parts and aspects of it, yet some I do not (which of course is normal for me :p)

I have been considering saying my shahadah. I have been back and forth on the subject and idea of going through with it. Mostly because I have been confused about certain things, mainly one being my profession and talents.
I am a ballet student, have been all my life. Ballet has been a huge part of my life and I have worked very hard to get to the level and profession that I am at right now. Of course, considering my level, I do have to work with male partners. I also am a model, which I have learned is not widely accepted in Islam.

I guess my question is, if I do decide to become a Muslim...say my shahadah...would I be compelled to drop these two things that I hold so dear to my heart?

Opinions would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks

First im want to make clear that what i'm about to say is MY opinion !! So nobody should feel offended.. I migh be wrong bu it is what I thnk.
I believe that being a musim comes from your heart. You believe in Allah wt and Mohammed (vzmh) en you want to worschip them.
Most important thing i Islam ar the 5 pilrs. Shahada, 5x prayer, Hadj, Ramadan and zakaat. If u aleady do that it's a good start.
Nobody is perfect so you can't do everything like you are told to do_Of course u can try !! The better u do the better it is for u on judgement day.
I also can't drop everyting i loved before I revert.

Of course this is MY opinion so I'm not saying it is ok. Maybe you should wait what other brohers and sisters say.. ut now uknow how i feel about it!!

sis we dont worship Muhamad pbuh.we only worship Allah

yes thats my opinion too.we have to take baby steps and insyaAllah He guides us.we know these things are haram and we should keep ourselves away from it.but just take ur time.once u begin to understand islam more ,u urself will know what to do.Cat steven and many other people stop music and so on.Allah guides us.u cant change everything in overnight.but it is really worth of trying if u believe in Allah=One God and Prophet Muhamad pbuh as His messenger.

You can be late for anything but never for SHAHADAH
You can give a second thought for anything but never for SHAHADAH

All of us(reverts) don't have the guts to do it but we did it Alhamdulilah.

The better person is the person who converts for Allah.if u convert coz of ur love for a man...u wont last longer in islam.coz u might leave islam when the man leaves u.

but u will stay forever as a muslim insyaALlah coz Allah will never leave u.

plz consider sis.do not let any wrong muslim to lead u and do not let syatan poison ur mind.

I haven't reverted either and I have a couple of things I feel hard to give up, namely music and movies. Especially music which has been part of my life for at least 35 years. There are some artists, albums and songs I will never stop listening to. But I understand your predicament since your interests is more about exposing body parts while I can enjoy my interests in private. I hope it will work out for you somehow.

MAsha Allaah , I hope you revert soon enough !!!
about things you mentioned , it's not a big deal in front of converting to Islam !!! Allaah will forgive us every sin we can commite but Only one sin he will not forgive which is to disbelieve in him or reject his message and truth !!! the one must take stpe forward and every thing will be easier inch Allaah !!!

Yup, the older we get or the wiser we get we realize that some things we like, even if we've liked them for decades, are trivial, or aren't as major to our lives as we may think. We just need to find out in our hearts what is more dear to us: this world, which is limited, or the hereafter, where we can finally meet our Lord and live eternally.

Welcome to the TTI family sis. Its beautiful that you are considering this beautiful way of life as a choice in your life. When anyone takes shahadah, its very difficult to give up certain thing that we were used to before islam and its a process, but it can be done on a gradual basis. The things that you said are true concerning your life choices and it is forbidden in islam, but dont let that delay you from taking shahadah.

Once you learn more about this way of life, you will understand it better and make that decision on your own with the help of Allah of course. Take your time and do what you feel is right in your heart. This is only my view and Allah(God) knows best.:hijabi:

hmmm i feel same crystal i love music as well and movies i love acting also! but shoot look at me i am Muslim and living a life of my daily time with full of mistakes only but at the same time doing good but i have to take a path were i will do good and live good Allah himself. Insha'Allah the meaning the word the feeling the mortals of love within Allah reach your heart and let that be a "Brain Of The Heart" Emotions come within words and words come within thoughts, and thoughts come within messages of your heart, make sure you use them wisely or else it will be something you won't be.

Hi Crystal
I think one should have his priority list and if you feel that Ballet and Modeling are important and you will not stop no mater what happen, that is ok.

I will advice you to become a Muslim when you feel comfortable and keep doing your thing. You can do anything else you want. Do you think that all Muslims live by the book? I am a born muslim and have many sins. I always seek forgiveness and mercy.

I feel that modeling and Ballet are sin, but hay, We all have our thing, we commit our sins and we ask for forgiveness and we ask to guide us to the straight path and have mercy on us.

4:48
which translates to
Verily, Allâh forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills; and whoever sets up partners with Allâh in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.[4]

39:53

which translates to
Say: "O ‘Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh: verily, Allâh forgives all sins. Truly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful
May God guide us all and accept us

I'm not saying you SHOULD dance and model, I'm just going to say that those shouldn't be things that hold you back from converting if you believe in Islam.

No one is perfect and no one is expected to suddenly become perfect after reversion. Maybe after you revert you'll have a change of heart, and maybe you'll keep doing what you're doing - only God knows.

Dancing and modeling is rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It's not like you have a serious drug habit to break or something.

If you believe in Islam don't let it hold you back.

Hello CrystalHijab!

A warm welcome to you firstly. It is really amazing to see your interest in the beautiful religion of Islaam.

Take your shahada inshaAllah A.S.A.P. Sister nobody knows when they are going to die. Please do whats right and u will never regret it inshaAllah! :)
After reverting, everything will fall into place. As your connection and bond with Allah Ta'ala strengthens you will want to leave ALL Sins and you will catch yourself trying to please Allah in every possible way. But remember everything will happen slowly. So be patient and dont be too hard on yourself! :)

We are all here for you every step of the way inshaAllah.

Please keep us updated!
Take care

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah.

Musical instruments are forbidden in Islaam with ijmaa' (concensus of all scholars), and there are reasons for that! Nothing is forbidden without reason.

See this long article with proofs

Ruling on music, singing and dancing
http://islamqa.com/en/ref/5000

No discussions about music in this topic.

----

As for the sister, pronounce the Shahaadah before it is too late and join the Muslim Ummah (community), and learn and practice Tawheed and follow the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). And if you do some things that are forbidden in Islaam, then it is ok, meaning, you will get knowledge and practice step by step. Don't be afraid.

big hugs

mmm what can i say i was in the same boat as u sis.
u sed u are doin ballet and also a model. do u enjoy doin this? is this the only thing u want to do in ur life?

think very deep of this life. are u in this life to plessure youself orALLAH which has givin us many talents and beautiful things.

i was studyin performin arts at the time and i knew in my heart that was the only thing i can do. at the time i was in a western world and no matter where i worked males would be there. this is just the way life is. but anyway islam was still in my heart and i was battlin for years what would benifit me the most so i chose dance and acting singing u name it. at that time i was doin that i had gd grades but my life still had a question mark what if i die tomoz i just live this life for myself. in ur heart if u belive in ALLAH ur trust is with him and only him. therfore no matter even if u havent got ballet or modelin in ur life ALLAH will replace with something better. anywayz right now im in kuwait and on the right path i have something in my life which in my life i never thought i could get or have . im not sayin that is what is gd for u but i coudlnt wish for anything better then bein where iam now , islam is the key to paradise and there is nothing better than that. if u put ur trust in ALLAH he will make things easy for u. i know that 100%

before reverting i kept holding bk i kept askin myself question yes but what about this what about that. this is the work of satan and that is what happening now. this happened with me, but right now ur mind is makin excuses so u dont enter islam cause satan doesnt want that for u. but i can see u want islam but is worried about ur situaltion ur in now. i will make dua for u sis and think long and hard. give up the excuses and just GO FOR IT. there is no gift in life then islam.

Are you convinced in your heart and mind that mingling with male dancers and allowing men to ogle you as you model are improper? If you are, then God's message has reached you. God does not wish to put a hardship on us or deprive us of pleasure. He wants us to be pure and to have pure fun. The problem is not Ballet. You can dance with female dancers to a female audience. You can dance for your husband.

Sorry I have not been able to respond.

No I am not convinced, since living in the western world, this has never been a big deal, nor will it ever be. Concerning modeling, allowing men to ogle me (by the way, I do not do scandalous photo shoots) is not a big deal. I cant dance with only female dancers, to an only female audience. Its impossible, they just don't have that. My faith would have to work around my aspirations.

I don't know guys. Sometimes I'm so sure of it, so happy to do it, then I think about how it just might not be able to fit.

I do like what others have been saying, how we are not all perfect, and have to ask for forgiveness (sorry I cannot remember your Usernames). That, in all, makes perfect sense to me, concerning modeling and ballet.

:)

thank you all soo much !:)

If any of you'd like to add me to msn. Feel free. I'd love to talk

Thanks :)

Becoming a muslim is a process that takes time & as you level up, your faith in allah increases bit by bit & by the time you decide to take the shahada your love for allah will replace the love for ballet & modelling, but in the mean time you should try to the BEST OF YOUR ABILITY to know more about islam & you can do this by talking to practising sisters, attending lectures, reading books about islam etc.

For some this process maybe as short as a day or even less but the rest it usually takes a couple of months or even years, but i hope that it takes you as little time as possible because nobody knows when he/she is going to die, so the earlier you take your shahada the better. I hope that i''ve answered your question

It shouldn't be the right thing to follow up modelling and ballet after you convert Islam. But Almighty Allah is going to open new doors when the others shutted. My point is iman (faith) needs unquestioned submission.
But on the other hand nobody shouldn't judge you about what you do. In my country so many people call theirselves ''Muslim'' but they drink, they dance or etc. Blessings of Islam are so huge that inshallah you will taste them too.

We all have our ups and downs.

Always Keep God in you thoughts and seek his forgiveness. You'll feel his presence and Mercy all around you. He is the only one you'll ever need. He is the only one that matter. He will never abandon you, never fail you. He is always there if you wanted some to listen to you. He is too close to you. If you needed any think no matter how trivial just ask him, never shy way from asking.

The calmness, content and peace that downs on me whenever I keep him in my thoughts are truely amazing and I am truly sorry for all my transgressions.

I would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to share this stuff.

feel free to contact any one of us for further help if needed
