Women are discouraged from shaking hands with men who are not close relatives. It might seem strange in a Western context, because then it comes off as "not being polite", however, women in Islam are given a high status of respect and dignity, therefore, the higher standards are followed.

A British man came to a Sheikh and asked, "Why is not permissible in Islam for women to shake hands with a man?" The Sheikh said, "Can you shake hands with Queen Elizabeth?" British man replied, "Of course not, there are only certain people who can shake hands with Queen Elizabeth". Sheikh replied with a smile on his face, "Our Women are Queens and Queens do not shake hands with strange men"...

ukhti. I don't shake hands with non-mahram men, like for instance my doctor or my teacher. It becomes easier if you start the habit right from the start and explain the islamic point of view concerning the matter, so that they know the wisdom behind it too.

I can remember that I went to a talk and there was this non muslim women who went to shake a muslim brothers hand becus she was happy with the advice he had given her and out of gratitude she went to shake his hand but he rejected her and said men dont shake hands with women....She got proper embarassed. yeh i understand he didnt want to shake her hand but he should have shaked her hand right? and then later expalined, so that she wouldnt have got embarassed....looking at her face expression she was probably thinkiing what an IDIOT and people who were looking were thinking 'sad guy'

Actually, no, what the guy did here was right - no shaking hands means no shaking hands.

I remind myself before I remind others. I try not to shake hands, but I am guilty of once or twice at interviews not knowing how to respond, and giving in. Astaghfirullah. I'll really try not to do so again - but does anyone have tips what to do when you have to make a good impression, but you don't want to appear rude? If its a casual day at work or outside, and someone tries to shake my hand, I usually say "oh, my hands are full." or something. But what of in a really professional situation?

My principal tries to shake my hand every single day in the morning (EVERYDAY!) and I pretend that my hands are full holding
my humongous history textbook and bag on each hand, and I'd be like, "Oh oops, sorry. Good morning" lol. It gets really awkward sometimes, but it's hard not to sound mean. :/

That's right - well, I wasn't the person who wrote the quote - I just wrote the first paragraph. However, the idea is there. Let's not be too technical on details. How about replacing Queen Elizabeth with a Queen in olden times - I'm sure she would not have shaken hands. Now what Queen do the non-muslims admire? Cleopatra or maybe Nefertiti?
