Dear and respected sisters and brothers,

I saw a video a moment ago in which muslim women in UK were not being allowed to enter in the mosques for prayer. The men present there, some of which were there to pray and some of them belonged to the mosque committe, were very rude to the sisters, they slammed the doors on their face, raised their voice right on the doorway of the mosque and the only answer they had to give to the sisters was "go home". Some said that they should not show their face to the men even though almost all the sisters were covered in hijab.

I want to know what do you guys think of it, whether the sisters should be allowed in the mosques or not. LET me enlighten you though that since the time of the prophet muhammad (saw) women have been praying in 'Masjid an nabawi' and i firmly believe that sisters have as much right to the mosque as the brothers.

Ruling on women going to the masjid (mosque)

Question:
Here in my country (Surinam, South America), the Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa‘ah forbid women to go to the mosque, saying that the first Imaam (Imaam Abu Haneefah) learned to do what pleases the Holy Prophet SAWS (peace be upon him), and he had said once that it is better for the women to perform prayer at home, because there is more sawaab (reward) in that, and as we come here to earn sawaab, it is better to do this.

Is it right to forbid women to go to the mosque? If so, where in the Holy Qur’aan or the ahaadeeth can I find this?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah.

There is no doubt that a woman’s prayer in her house is better for her than praying in the mosque, as is indicated by the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him). He said: "Do not prevent your women from going to the mosque, even though their houses are better for them." (Reported by Abu Dawud in al-Sunan, Baab maa jaa’a fee khurooj al-nisaa’ ilaa’l-masjid: Baab al-tashdeed fee dhaalik. See also Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 7458).

Whenever a woman prays in a place that is more private and more hidden, that is better for her, as the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said: "A woman’s prayer in her house is better than her prayer in her courtyard, and her prayer in her bedroom is better than her prayer in her house." (Reported by Abu Dawud in al-Sunan, Baab maa jaa’a fee khurooj al-nisaa’ ilaa’l-masjid. See also Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 3833).

Umm Humayd, the wife of Abu Humayd al-Saa‘idi reported that she came to the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) and said: "O Messenger of Allaah, I love to pray with you." He said: "I know that you love to pray with me, but praying in your house is better for you than praying in your courtyard, and praying in your courtyard is better for you than praying in the mosque of your people, and praying in the mosque of your people is better for you than praying in my mosque." So she ordered that a prayer-place be built for her in the furthest and darkest part of her house, and she always prayed there until she met Allaah (i.e., until she died). (Reported by Imaam Ahmad; the men of its isnaad are thiqaat (trustworthy)).

But the fact that praying at home is preferable does not mean that that women are not permitted to go to the mosque, as is clear from the following hadeeth:
From ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar, who said: "I heard the Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace be upon him) say: ‘Do not prevent your women from going to the mosque if they ask your permission.’" Bilaal ibn ‘Abdullah said, "By Allaah, we will prevent them." (Ibn ‘Umar) turned to him and told him off in an unprecedented fashion, saying: "I tell you what the Messenger of Allaah (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him) said, and you say ‘By Allaah, we will prevent them’!!" (reported by Muslim, 667).

But there are conditions attached to the permission for women to go to the mosque, as follows:
(1) She should wear complete hijaab.
(2) She should not go out wearing perfume.
(3) She should have the permission of her husband.

Her going out should not involve any other kind of prohibited acts, such as being alone in a car with a non-mahram driver. If a woman does something wrong like that, her husband or guardian has the right to stop her; in fact it is his duty to do so. And Allaah knows best.

this is a huge problem and thnx for bringing it up! Of course i think we should be allowed in. the mosque is the spritual centre of the community and what right do the brothers have to take it away from us???

[^^and thnx for that ruling im gonna print it! ^^]

in my opinion its a longterm problem which will not be resolved by JUST allowing women into mosques.

alhamdulillah my mosque does allow sisters in but then its a complete joke cos whernever we come in for talks and stuff they FORGET to switch on the speakers...we sat their for hour once and then the lecture was over...its happened more than once...its like would any of the brothers ever forget to switch on the speakers in the brothers section? of course not! its mad!

its not an easy job going in to the mosque either, there are 2 doors but the sisters door is always locked so we have to take the other door...whenever were sure theres nobody on the other side ...if were seen we get the nasty glares!

aswell as that there no one to complain to about it...we cant just walk up to the imam and say hey dude sort his out..... women need to be engaged in the running of the mosque aswell. we need to be given a voice in authority through which we can positively contribute

assalamu caleikum,

me, i love my mosque, really and i feel lucky cos it's just next to my college and 5 min away from where i live!!

the only thing is that there's one entry for men & women, that's the only thing thats quite.....
and because of that on fridays, there are soo many people that men are women are next to each other (every one roushing out at the same time, why's that???)

Our beloved Prophet peace be upon Him gave us the answer to that question.

No seriously. Is there a hadith that says about unmarried young women going to the Mosque?

:salam2:
My dear sister, i am not aware of any hadith myself. I guess there is no difference in women who are married or who are single about hijab, or is there ? Exactly not, so i guess you should go to the mosque if you feel like it and if you feel uncomfortable, then dont. Let me pop and idea, if you have a friend (another girl ofcourse) who would like to go to mosque, then you can go there together so you'll feel more comfy. How's that....:hijabi:

Would be Ok to assume that if you are not married then you need permission of your guardian? Like the husband being the guardian in the case where the woman was married.

In the time of Muhammed(saws), did the women not pray behind the men, and when the salah finished, the women would leave first and then the men do whatever?

No one can stop women from praying in the mosque. Most mosques here usually have an area for women to pray in. Though there are some ignorant people who prevent them from doing so...

The fact that someone voted that women should stay out seriously disturbs me. Women have a right to it as much as men do. At the mosque I go to, the women and men are totally separated 100% of the time. You can't even get into the mens social area or prayer area without going outside and walking around to the other side of the building, so running into men is only a problem in the parking lot, and even then it's never a problem.

If people can't conduct themselves in a respectful manner around the opposite sex then they have problems they should deal with themselves - not by taking it out on women who just want to pray and learn.

Cover your face and it is a must if you think you are attractive. Keep yourself modest and keep other Muslims modest too. Dont let any thought come in their mind about you. If they have books, then better borrow those books and study at home.
