Asalaamu' Alaykum,
The awrah of a male is from the navel to the knees and it is important to keep this area covered. Now I'm in a sort of dilemma; as my parents have gone abroad for a holiday they have left my younger brother with me and it is responsibility to look after him whilst they have gone. His cousins go swimming on a weekly basis and i am told it is a 'male session' only. However I am concerned that the trunks that they have do not cover the knees. They do however cover most of the thighs. I have refused to let him go and i understand his anger in me doing so. I wonder if any of you brothers and sisters know any place where i can get swimming clothes for men that cover the knees also? Most of the swimming trunks that i have seen are like shorts but they do not cover the knees!! I appreciate your help.
JazakhAllah khairen,

Asalaamu'Alaykum,
Yes i know the 3/4 bottoms, however, the material that they are usually made out of are not sutiable for swimming, jazakhAllah khairen for your input hough. I have searched the web but there are only swimming clothes for muslims called 'burqinis', i'm quite surprised that no one is selling swimming clothes for muslim men that cover their awrah.

Brother you can try buying him some long boxers with strings on them so they don't fall off when your baby brother is swimming.

And Allah knows best. Wa Salam.

Asalaamu' Alaykum,
BarakAllah feekum. I like brother Abdul Hasib's suggestion the best; my brother is 16 years old so he'll have a fit if i suggest it to him lol. The thing is that tights will work probably, but my brother is very self conscious and would rather not go swimming than go with tights. I think in the meantime i will suggest some better recreational activities for him to get involved in, but thank you everyone for your suggestions, JazakhAllah khairen.

well, you can go to someone who creates clothes , you buy the material, any kind of material you want, and you search for someone who makes clothes , you go to that person and you ask him to make a pair of bermudes(3-4) large size , and in this way your brother will have the hance to chosee what he wants !

i have to sayy that i am really surprised that man are starting to think in wearin the apropriate clothes, cause i was really wondering why all womens are strugling so much to wear the hijab , but when it comes to men , they don't really care , none is asking them :" why aren't you wearing the apropriate clothes" or none says that they are unfaitfull!!

I know I have seen shorts that a lot of surfers wear that are pretty long. They cover the knees. However, I think that's when they're being worn pretty low on the hips (below the navel). But I'm not sure. You could at least try that.

JazakhAllah khairen, i am really amazed at the helpfulness of the brothers and sisters here and i am touched, may Allah bless you all. Those surfing dudes usually wear it below their navel but i will insha'Allah see myself. I have wanted to go swimming for quite some time myself but it was the clothing that was the issue there. And yes it is quite true that women are told to wear hijab etc, but their are clothing guidelines for men too. The clothes shouldn't even be tight for men yet u see many that dress in such a manner. Also the trousers cannot be below the ankles and this is very important yet many of us sideline this to a non-issue. If i cannot find the swimwear mass produced, maybe i will have to see different people to make it from fresh as sister liaa has mentioned, and maybe start a business and exploit this market niche! Thanx for all ur help, barakAllah feekum.

What?!!!!
man do care about awra too .
It is just that the hijab stands out because that is like the first thing u see when u look at a lady because it is at around our eye level.....

For the guys it is usually the knees...So before u r able to look at the knees ...u lower ur gaze...as a result it is difficult to realise...

Thats just my opinion.....

As alkathiri said, it's definately the area you live, I could never see myself wearing other than thobes, jalabiyyahs and baggy casual clothes (extremely oversized t-shirts) and of course the (non-clipped) beard!

The suggestion about tights, I don't get it. They cover the knee but still expose its shape. Imam Al-Barbahaaree rahimahullah, in his Sharh us-Sunnah made a point that the mans pants (lower garment) should be baggy. Something skin tight such as tights themselves, do not cover the awrah. I guess it makes a visual difference if the swimming shorts aren't too short.

3/4 lengths, Basketball bottoms etc are the best bet. Also what about the ahadeeth regarding a mans "lightened" `awrah, in which the knees and thighs are somewhat exposed, though it is still impermissible to look at them?

I think the best thing to do is to check one of the well known fataawaa websites. Or check Fatawa Islamiyyah volume 8, I'm sure the issue pops up. I'll try to check later today inshaa Allaah.
