For our Senior year, we have to do a project on something that interests us. Then at the end of the year we have to present it in front of 3 judges and some other students who are waiting to present theirs. I was thinking of doing mine on Islam. Writing a paper on it, and doing a powerpoint presentation on it. Anyways, I really want to do it on Islam, but now i'm not to sure if i'd be allowed to. Since you can't teach religion in public schools. I'd ask my teacher who'd be helping us with our Senior project, but we're not in school, and since it's a lot of work I want to get started now. So I was basically wondering if any of you knew if i'd be able to do a project on it. I know you guys don't goto my school, or ever even heard of a Senior project, but any sort of help would be great. I don't see why it would be a problem, it's not like i'm forcing people to becoming Muslims, it's basically just teaching people the basics of Islam, and clearing up all the misconceptions about Islam.

If nobody can help, no worries i'll just wait til school starts again.

hmm I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do your project on Islam.
I'm 22 now but when I was in high school we learnt about other religions, it was part of the ciriculum (sp?). (I went to your everyday normal public school)

Not really sure.
I know my history teacher Junior year, whenever she brought up religion she'd always say "Don't worry i'm not going to teach religion, I don't want to get fired." I don't know if she was just exaggerating, but some of my friends don't think i'd be able to do it on religion.

Hopefully I can though, i'd be pretty upset if I can't. There's nothing else I want to do it on.

Well I guess all you really can do is ask, but of course you can always do the research for your own knowledge if worse comes to worse. Good luck inshAllah they will let you do what you want for your topic. :)

As-salam, I do not think it will be a problem. I took world religion class in college level and they taught us all the major religion (islam, christianity, hinduism etc.). Like: what they believe and do not believe, how they celebrate their religious holidays etc. I pray that Allah will help you.

Salaam Alaiykum,

I would recommend you read up, watch documentaries on the life of prophet Mohammed (pbuh) like the one on www.islamway.com and do your project on him and his call.

The life of prophet mohammed (pbuh) indeed is the best form of dawah for he was after all the last prophet of god.

How funny - My fiancé had to do the exact same project for his senior year to graduate! He went to high school in Sacramento. It must be a California thing.

In some towns here in California they don't have to do it, I even have some friends switching schools so they don't have to do it, lol. But yeah, I never heard of any other state having to do it.

JazakAllah for the help everyone.

Salaam,

A senior project needs to be a showpiece that weaves many of your courses. Let us say you want to present Islam. To satisfy your English lliterature requirements you could do a segement on the influence of Islam on Samuel Taylor Coolridge...In Zanadu did Kubla Khan...To satisfy your math requirements you could talk about algebra and differentail equations being developed by the Muslims...for social studies...it's wide open..if you take spanish...50% of spanish is arabic...
All I am suggesting is to make the project very global and tie in the influence of Islam to all your subjects. If this is any help feel free to PM me and I will work with you.

InshAllah I also want to do my senior project on islam in general, the prophet (saw) influence on the world, or umar bin alkhattab...
inshAllah it will be much better than my sophmore history day ( which i did on Muhammad (saw) and failed:SMILY23: )

I'm still not real sure if I can do it on Islam. I started school Monday and my senior seminar teacher was saying it has to be career choice related. Well he was making it seem that way. I can still ask, but I don't know if i'll be able to do it on Islam..

Salaam sweet sister,

Any career you select to persue will be dependent on Islam. You can always find a way to research any career and tie it in. Not to worry you have many many brothers and sisters who will guide you. After all is this not a family project?

pick a certain topic and just use islam as way of presenting you information for example: Women's movement or women's right throughout centuries and show how Islam has always given women there rights and liberated them

You can also say your interested in Islamic finance and economics, as its the fastest growing financial sector. Of course this would require alot of research on your part through Quran and hadith, and investigating how current islamic banks operate. I think it would be tougher then other subjects, but a little more interesting.

Another great idea, thank you!
Actually, my teacher said if you do more work and you go out of your way and get real into it, the judges will be more impressed. So, i'll consider that one too. Thank you! :hijabi:

From what I understand, teachers can not teach religion but students can do projects on religion if they want. If, for the most part, it is open for what you can do then I don't think they can say specifically that you can't do anything on religion. Especially if it is only in front of a few people and it isn't preaching or anything. I actually did many projects on religion in high school and most of mine were on Paganism back then. Most people actually found them quite informative after the initial shock.

Another idea for your project is integrating Muslim values and lifestyles into the American culture. Such things could include having prayer rooms in malls, offering more halal options, or at least vegetarian, dog walking areas in parks and not allowing them to run around, etc. What would need to be done in our society to make it more Muslim friendly? With it being the fastest growing religion in the world... it might be time for America to open its eyes and stop making us pray in dressing rooms. :hijabi:
