Hello Brandi,
I commend for trying to make an effort to get married at a young age. You should always ponder about the future, especially with your Muslim husband - Inshallah (God willing). You should also think about the faith of your kids, when you are granted them (inshallah).
There is a thin line between Islam and culture. Study Islam properly and you can easily identify the two. The reason your mom might like their "culture" is maybe because they are practicing Islamic etiquettes. Islam is a beautiful religion. It is for ALL mankind, no matter what race, color, or nationality you are. We worship God (or Allah - in Arabic) alone. We consider Moses, Abraham, Adam, Jacob, Joseph, Jesus, Mohammad, David and many others (may Allah exalt their mention) as prophets of God.
Islam honors and dignifies the status of women. Islam gave women rights more than 1400 years ago, which was unheard of in Western countries. For example voting rights which were given to Western women less than 90 years ago.
I wish you the best and may God show you the right path.
