Asalaamu alaikum brothers and sisters -

I know that we read the Quran during the month of Ramadan; but as I've only been a Muslim for just since last December I cannot read Arabic. Will I still get rewarded for reading an English translation of the Quran (inshallah)?

Thank you!

Even looking (not reading it) at each letter of the verses will be rewarded. Go ahead brother. Ramadhan al-Mubarak is the month of Qur'an.

He also said, "Read the Quran, for there is a reward for reading each letter. I don't say that "alif-lam-meem" is a letter, but alif is a letter, lam is a letter and meem is a letter!" I don't know how authentic this hadeeth is though. Anybody knows?

this hadith is in Sunan At-Tirmidhi

Akhi..baraka Allaho feek..*looking* at the words of the Qura'an does not count as a recitation..it counts as *tadabbor* (studying/understanding/learning words and their meaning)..in order for reading the Qura'an to be *fully rewarded* as a *reading/recitation*..one must move *the tongue* and/or *the lips*..it's not necessary to recite so loud as to have others hear you or for you to hear yourself even..you can very well read *very silently*..but you *must* move at least your *tongue* with the words you're reading (this applies even to everyday general remembrances)..

The link above provides thorough review of this issue..please read it if you have the time akhi..wa jazaka Allah khair

The prophet, peace be upon him said, ""Such a person as recites the Quran and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Quran by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward."!" reported by Al-Bukhaari, Book #60, Hadith #459, and narrated by `Aa'isha, may God have been pleased with them.

He also said, "Read the Quran, for there is a reward for reading each letter. I don't say that "alif-lam-meem" is a letter, but alif is a letter, lam is a letter and meem is a letter!" I don't know how authentic this hadeeth is though. Anybody knows?

The hadith is categorized as *Sahih* by Al-Tirmidhi akhi..but it's important to mention that the *translation* of the Qura'an is not considered *the Qura'an* it is considered *tafsir (explanation/commentary)* of its *meaning*..thus..reading it earns the reward of reading general *tafsir*..not *the original words of the Qura'an*..which earns a *specific reward*..the hadith quoted by you akhi would apply to reading *the Arabic* Qura'an only..of course..there *is* a reward for reading a translation still especially if it is for knowing and implementing its commandments (as already mentioned)..*but reward wise* and in the fashion specified above it is not *that* kind of reward..it is a more *general* one (so to speak)..I have some links speaking of this matter as well..inshallah they will be of benefit..

That's right, sister. I was making the case for brother DanyalSAC to encourage him to learn Arabic ;) If uttering the letters carries such rewards, imagine what reading them with comprehension will get him!

I am in the process of learning. It does take some time though...! Like Yusuf Estes before me, I was well into my 40s when I converted. Learning a new language isn't easy at this age :)

But I thank everyone on this board who answered me, jazakAllah khairn!

Brother Danyal Assalam-o-alikum,
Ramadan Mubarak,

Majority of the Muslims around the world do not understand Arabic but they can read Arabic. But I know for fact they just read Quran (Arabic) without understanding what they are reading.

So I guess that reading the translation will be rewarded more than just reading Arabic without understanding it, because you are understanding what Allah our creator is saying to you. The only issue is that a translation is an another person's understanding, so I would read translation of several people to get a more clearer meaning.

Having said that Quran is always the "Arabic Quran" only, and no translation can be any substitute for it, because Arabic Quran are the words which Allah (SWT) used Himself to send His message in. And these words have power... Once you start understanding Arabic you will realize this point more.

I think we have a great panel here who have provided some great answer here.

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, thank you very much for raising this question, which reflects a truthful desire to have a clearer view of the teachings of Islam. May Allah crown this truthful desire with His satisfaction and reward.

First of all, we’d like to state that you are to be commended for your keen desire to read and understand Allah’s Word. You should know that there is no nobler endeavor than that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Those who attempt to read it with difficulty (because of their lack of familiarity with the language) will merit double rewards.” (Reported by at-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud; also Bukhari and Muslim in their own words)

Also, we advise you, dear brother, to try to read the Qur’an in Arabic to gain the great benefit and reward of Allah for reading His Book, and read the translation of the Qur’an to grasp its meaning.

As the Qur’an is revealed in Arabic, reading it in its original language entails great merits. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever reads one letter of the Book of Allah, will have one hasanah (reward) for doing so, and every hasanah will be multiplied by 10. I do not say that Alif, Lam, Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.”

Commenting on the above Hadith, Sheikh M. S. Al-Munajjid, a prominent Saudi Muslim lecturer and author, states:

“The reward mentioned in this Hadith is only for the one who reads the Qur’an as it is in Arabic, not for the one who reads the translation of the meanings in any other language. However, if a person reads a translation of the meanings in order to understand the meaning and benefit from what the Qur’anic verses are saying, then he will be rewarded for doing this, because the Muslim will be rewarded for reading tafsir (explanation and commentary of the Qur’an), and a translation is tafsir. But there is no indication that the person who reads a translation will earn the reward mentioned in the Hadith. The bounty of Allah is immense.”

Responding to the question in point, Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, former President of the Islamic Society of North America, states:

“I am pleased to know that you would very much like to read the Qur'an. May Allah bless you and help you to read it regularly. The Qur'an is the word of Allah. It came to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) through the Angel Jibril in the Arabic tongue. It is very important that a Muslim read the Qur'an in its original authentic language. There is a great blessing in reading the Qur'an in Arabic.

The translations of the Qur'an are not called the Qur'an. They are only the translations of the meaning of the Qur'an. The translations are not the words of Allah, they are the words of human beings who explain the words of Allah in their own language according to their own understanding and ability to translate.

You should try to learn the reading of the Qur'an in Arabic. It is not very difficult. With some efforts you can learn it in a short of period of time. However, after reading the text in Arabic, you should also read the meaning through translations. Without understanding, one cannot get the benefit of the guidance of the Book of Allah.

We must read the Qur'an in Arabic. We must try to understand the Qur'an either by learning the Arabic language or by reading its meaning through some good translations and commentaries. Then we must do our best to follow the guidance that we receive from the Qur'an. These are the three basic duties that we owe to the Book of Allah

This is what the sheikh here told me. Even just looking at each letter in the Qur'an (not the translation) will be rewarded, let alone reciting/reading them according to the sheikh. Thanks for highlighting it to me. Allah knows best.
