Asalaamu aleikum,
I actually did not watch the video, but I have an idea of what may be in it, and I understand what you are saying sister Diane. I am grateful that there are more and more "non-muslims" who do realize this is not the true face of Islam. However, I agree that it is very distressing that there are so many "muslims" who do not realize these things are wrong and instead will defend these kinds of actions.
I think one of the biggest duties we have as Muslims is to recognize the face of evil, and speak out against all of the forms of evil we encounter in the world. In Islam we are called to enjoin good and forbid evil. Also we are to repel evil by what is best, with GOOD. We need do whatever we can to stand up against evil, and not remain silent in the face of evil. Especially when it is happening within our own community, the Muslim ummah.
The fact of the matter is that we are coming upon ever increasing difficult times. There are many articles on TTI, especially in the Ummah in Conflict section, which help shed more light on the situation we are facing and what is really going on in the world and within the Muslim Ummah. If you haven't read them already, I would really recommend it.
I feel our greatest responsiblity is to strengthen our mutual Muslim community. First and foremost we have a duty to strive to improve and be the best we can be individually, to be a good role model in the world, to constantly seek to repent to Allah when we commit errors, to be more kind and do more good in the world, to contribute in a beneficial way to our families and to society. We also have a sacred duty if we find our brothers/sisters doing something wrong to try to stop them from continuing in that behavior. Even if the behavior is not changed as a result of trying to correct someone, you at least have done your duty to Allah by trying to help with whatever means you have at your disposal.
Islam is the most wonderful, beautiful religion. There are still pious and upright Muslims who practice their religion well in the world today. We should focus our attention on learning from them whenever possible. And remember that there will always remain an upright party who will uphold the religion in the correct fashion, until the day of Judgement. I think that the increasing number of reverts to the religion in recent times will bring a much needed reform of the religion and turn people back to the right practice, inshaAllah. But regardless of what others may do, we always have an obligation to do our best and what is right for Allah's sake, and on this we should rely. Allah is always faithful to his servants, and will fulfill all of his promises in due time.
Peace and God bless
