CAIRO – Spreading his anti-Muslim message to Canada, far-right Dutch lawmaker Geert Wilders has called for banning Muslim immigration into Western countries, warning that Islam poses threats to freedoms.
“What happened in Europe will also happen here,” Wilders told the local Sun News network on Monday, May 9.
“We should wake up to the fact that Islamisation means less freedom to us and our children.”
Wilders, the leader of the far-right Freedom Party (PVV), is due to speak to local Christians groups on what he describes as threats posed by Islam to Western civilization.
He said that he was obliged to warn Canadians about the threats Islam poses to Western freedoms.
“(Canadian soldiers) didn’t give their lives to free Europe, (so that) not 50, 60, 70 years later we would face another totalitarianism ideology called Islam.”
Wilders is notorious for his rants against Islam and Muslims.
He has also called for banning the Noble Qur’an, describing the Muslim holy book as “fascist”.
In 2008, Wilders released a 15-minute documentary accusing the Qur'an of inciting violence.
Ahead of last year’s general elections, Wilders’ anti-immigrant party campaigned to "stop the Islamization of the Netherlands", and the building of new mosques.
His party’s anti-Islam campaigns, however, have helped it make its biggest gains since Wilders has founded it in 2006.
Islam Threat
Repeating his accusations to Muslims, the far-right Dutch leader said that Islam undermines Western society.
“The majority of Muslims are law-abiding, they want a good life for their families. There are moderate Muslims but there are no moderate Islam,” he said.
“The stronger the people become, the harder it will be to fight the ideology.”
Wilders called for banning Muslim immigration into Western countries.
"For the people who are (already in Canada), behave, assimilate or we will send you packing," he said.
"For the people to not make the problem worse, stop the immigration from non-Western countries and stop the Islamisation process and the building of new mosques.
"This is really what we should do."
Wilders’ invitation to speak in Canada has drawn fire anti-racist groups in the country.
"As Muslims, racialized people and/or anti-racist allies, we are alarmed at this invitation extended to Wilders by the Canada Christian College and International Free Press Society Canada," Anti-Racist Action and the First Nations Solidarity Working Group said in a press release cited by The Toronto Sun Newspaper.
The groups also warned Wilders’ speech would harm social cohesion in the country.
"It is also very clear that after all the hysteria about free speech, the event has been organized so as to deter any dissenting voices or protest."
Muslims make around 1.9 percent of Canada's 32.8 million population, and Islam is the number one non-Christian faith in the Roman Catholic country.
A survey has showed the overwhelming majority of Muslims are proud to be Canadian.
