Most people think that television is haram only because it projects images of living creatures. The taking of pictures, Posing for pictures and displaying of pictures is an issue, which the ulama have discussed in detail and have put forward to the public. The verdict on pictures of living creatures being haram is common knowledge.

The leader of all angels and the only angel favoured by Allah sub'hanahu wa ta'ala, to carry the Message of Allah to approximatly 124,000 Prophets, Jibra'eel Ameen, once made a promise to visit Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) at an appointed time and place. Rasoolullah sallallahu alayyhi wasallam waited at the prescribed time but Jibra'eel alayhis salam did not come.

i do not wish to go into the details of this hadeeth because i wish to draw your attention only to the fact that when the Prophet of Allah (pbuh) asked the great Angel why he did not keep to his promise, he replied,
"We angels do not enter a house which contain a dog or a picture" (Bukhari, Muslim)
Today, tables in living rooms and bedroom walls are adorned and decorated with family and other portraits, to the extent that some 'students' hang portraits of their 'shaykh' on the walls for blessings. It is difficult to comprehend how the Mercy of Allah ta'ala is going to descend, as it is the angels that descend from the Almighty Allah carrying the mercy and blessings.
Peace and Tranquility
What we have to intellectualy deduce from this is that a house which contains pictures which are not only still, but moving, walking, talking, dancing; which are accompanied by music, shamelessness and foul language; which are depicting adultery and warfare; within which there are violation of the rules of the sharee'ah and even a challenge to the Existance of Allah; and which sow seeds for numerous evils in out hearts, - then how, my brothers and sisters, is it possible for such a home to be showered with the Mercy of Allah?

Today, the absence of serenity is rite in our hearts. Many people now days go to a maulana and complain they feel restless, confused and distressed,' The most obvious question asked would be whether there is some financial difficulty, family problem, maritual problem or problem concerning children. But the answer is almost always negative. 'Everything is fine', they say. 'However, i cannot sleep, i am restless, unsatisfied and always feel distressed.'

What is the cause of this problem?

Until this disastrous object, the box of hundreds of thousand social virusses is within every corner of the world, but you will not find it. I can say this without any hesitation or doubt.

Any home with video and television is not visited by angels. The Prophet of Allah (pbuh) has informed us that any home which contain a picture of living creatures is not visited by angels. There is no need to go in depth on this issue beacuse most people are aware of it and will also tell you that the television is haram because it projects pictures of living creatures and this is prohibited in sharee'ah. In its own right, this is correct and because of the wide acceptance of this fact i do not wish to go into the depth of this issue.
Why is TV Haram?
However, do you think television is only haram beacuse it projects images? The reasons for the television being haram are not one, two or three but many if not countless. Everybody who studies its influences finds new dangers.

Woww.

If tv is haram then isn't this computer thingy is also haram for the reason that you gave us above??????.

There are people who even say that living in this country (USA) is also haram.???

And probably in future people will even say to live is haram.....lol.....

What about a knife....people use it as tool to kill other. And we KNOW killing is not allowed..so this knife is also haram??????

We know that knife is used to kill, but also we know that knife is also used for many other positive thing (e.g kitchen)......still no one so far said that knife is haram to use (i dont prob in future there might be such people).......

so what i want to say is that a particular action with that tool is haram. NOT THE OBJECT....killing is haram by knife..but to have knife is not haram...............To watch *!*!*!*!o on computer or tv is haram............but to have or watch tv is not haram by itself.....

Hence it depends all upon the usage .....it all depends upon the person.........it does not depend on the object..

With all due respect, if that is all haram, then the debates we watch of Muslim scholars are haram. The lectures we watch are haram, Muslim magazines, passport pictures, etc are all haram. Everything is basically haram. Tv is not haram but most of things on it is haram or else we should not even use it to watch the lectures of our favorite scholars. We shouldn't even use money since drug dealers use it too and so do prostititutes. We should by gasoline either for our cars because gas stations sell cigarettes, liquor, dirty things etc. Based on this everything becomes haram, and even living life. Might as well just sit at home all day and not do anything for fear of it being haram.

It get's out of hand how some people go to extremes with everything and even things which are not haram they make haram. As for the hadiths quoted about the angels entering homes, I have done research on that from a variety of scholars and I am sorry but that does not apply to everthing that modern scholars want to make haram. It is true that many of the things on tv are bad and haram but the Tv itself is not haram or else computers are also and as I said, we will not be able to watch anything whether Islamic videos, lectures, reverts, etc. Everything is haram, and soon they'll say taking showers is haram too. I already had a person tell me it is haram to wear deoerant, perfumes, etc. I guess we gotta walk around smelling and I thought angels don't like smells.

I agree with rashadi.... There are things in life that are halal but can be used for haram but it doesn't make it haram...the Modern society has ways of accomplishing many aspects of life the easy way these days... Like attending a conference without even being there... Just flick on the tv and there ya go... It not whether something is haram or halal it's how's it used is what makes it what it is

الفقير الى الله
Quote:

Is watching TV permitted in Islaam ? If so under what coditions ?

Praise be to Allaah.

The issue of watching films is not free from numerous reservations from a shar’i point of view, such as uncovering ‘awraat, listening to music, spreading corrupt beliefs and calling for imitation of the kuffaar. Allaah has commanded us to lower our gaze, as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts)” [al-Noor 24:30-31].

Since lowering the gaze is the basis of protecting the private parts, it is mentioned first. Allaah has made the eyes the reflection of the heart: if a person lowers his gaze, the desire in his heart will be reduced, but if a person looks and stares, the desire in his heart will be provoked.

In Saheeh Muslim (1218) it is reported that Al-Fadl ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) was riding behind the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) from Muzdalifah to Mina, when some women riding on camel-borne sedan chairs passed by. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) turned his [al-Fadl’s] head away. This was prevention and denunciation through action, for if looking were permissible he would have approved of what he did.

In Saheeh al-Bukhaari (6343) it is reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Every son of Adam has his share of zinaa decreed for him, and he will undoubtedly get his share. The eye commits zinaa and its zinaa is looking. The tongue commits zinaa and its zinaa is speaking; the feet commit zinaa and their zinaa is walking; the hands commit zinaa and their zinaa is touching. The heart longs and desires for something and the private parts confirm that or deny it.”

He began by mentioning the eye because this is how the zinaa of the hand, foot, heart and private parts begins. By mentioning the zinaa of the tongue, he pointed out that the mouth can commit zinaa by speaking. And he stated that the private parts can confirm that if they make the deed happen, or deny it if that does not happen.

This hadeeth gives the clearest indication that the eye can sin by looking and that this is its zinaa. This is a refutation to those who say that looking is allowed in all circumstances.

It was also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “O ‘Ali, do not follow a look with a second, for the first look is allowable but not the second.”

A look has the same effect on the heart as an arrow has on its victim. If it does not kill him, it will wound him. It is like a spark of fire in dried grass; if it does not burn all of it, it will still burn some of it. May Allaah have mercy on the one who said:

“Everything starts with a look, and big fires start from little sparks.

How often has a heart been dealt a fatal blow like that of an arrow, with no need for a bow.

As long as a man’s eyes are looking around, looking into the eyes of others, he is in a state of danger.

His eye delights in that which could destroy his heart. The joy that may lead to harm is not welcome.”

Hence Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Fataawa 3/227:

With regard to television, it is a dangerous device and its harmful effects are very great, like those of the cinema, or even worse. We know from the research that has been written about it and from the words of experts in Arab countries and elsewhere enough to indicate that it is dangerous and very harmful to Islamic beliefs (‘aqeedah), morals and the state of society. This is because it includes the presentation of bad morals, tempting scenes, immoral pictures, semi-nakedness, destructive speech, and Kufr. It encourages imitation of their conduct and ways of dressing, respect for their leaders, neglect of Islamic conduct and ways of dressing, and looking down on the scholars and heroes of Islam. It damages their image by portraying them in an off-putting manner that makes people despise them and ignore them. It shows people how to cheat, steal, hatch plots and commit acts of violence against others. Undoubtedly anything that produces so many bad results should be stopped and shunned, and we have to close all the doors that could lead to it. If some of our brothers denounce it and speak out against it, we cannot blame them, because this is a part of sincerity towards Allaah and towards other people.

Whoever thinks that this device (TV) can be free of these evils and can be used only for good purposes if it is censored properly is exaggerating and is making a big mistake, because the censor may miss things and most people nowadays want to imitate the foreigners. It is very rare to find censors who are doing their job properly, especially nowadays when most people are only interested in time-wasting entertainment and things that turn people away from true guidance. Reality bears witness to that.

Assalaamu'Alaykum,

It seems like the initial is a Fatawa. We should all be careful of giving our Fatawa's as we are not knowledgeable to make such judgements. Here is a good thread about this and another but I can't find that one,

http://www.turntoislam.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11719

With regards to TV, there is a good Fatawa in Fatawa Islamiyah regarding this, Insha'Allaah I will post it later and give a link here. But I think we can all agree most programmes on TV contain music, adorned women (or men, Astaghfir'Allaah), storylines which hint or contain Shirk and so on. Is it appropriate for us Muslims to be watching such programmes? I will post the Fatawa, it addresses the issue well, it is by Muhammad Ibn Utaymeen (Rahimahullaah). There are a few good programs on television nowadays anyway, sadly.

I just wanted to added, regardless of whether you continue to watch TV or not, the question remains, where is the benefit in watching TV? (Apart from the good programmes). It is pretty much a waste of time and we have little of it, we should cherish the time we have and utilise it to the best of our ability. Subhaan'Allaah, considering now, a year feels like a month, a month feels like a week, and a week is like a day.

May Allah help us. Ameen.

Walaykum Salaam.

Salaam Alaiykum,

I think its very good example above about the knife. If one uses a knife to kill doesnt mean we say Knives are haram. Likewise we cant ban TV's alltogether as there is benefit in using them in a shariah compliant way.

And IF we make TV haram what about the TTI videos?? :D is that not TV as well?

Brother Abu Huraiyrah, you mentioned TurnTOIslam as a source... can you give me the link inshaallah??

Jazka'Allah Khair for the post. I just want to share my thoughts on television .... whether it is halah or haraam ..... Allah Knows best. Televsion isn't good for you for so many reasons - it wastes your time etc. I won't go into that. But for those who say that you can learn from t.v etc - then i say to them directly, it is better for you to learn about Islam through other mediums - for example books.

I pray Allah helps us all to do what is right, and refrain from what is evil. Aameen. Remember what you watch, and what you hear, Allah is aware of all. Only do that which is going to please Allah and bring you closer to Allah. Don't think about anything else.

Good post brother Rashadi...

This is the kind of thing that bothers me the most. How are we expected to gain reverts to our easy going religion by telling them they have to live a bubble??

There was another lady a while back on here who's christian but loved to play the piano at her church and home. When she posted regarding her interest in Islam everyone jumped in to write about the issue of music in Islam. Consequently; we never heard from her again.. Good job everyone!!!

.

You are right akhi there are a lot of cases like that where people or truth seekers get chased away because they are drilled with the everything is haram. I like how one Muslim lecturer said it(Jefferey Lang). He said "If I had not researched Islam on my own and would have just taken the word of others, I would have left it the next day". This is the position I hold too and some people even twist hadeets in order to try to make something haram. The hadith about angels and pictures has nothing to do with tv, etc. The full hadith actually states that the angels do not enter a home in which there is a picture of someone or there is a dog. This is talking about like the mushrikin who put pictures and images of people. There are Muslims who have pictures of the kaaba on their walls, and pictures of other objects. No matter how one puts it, this hadith is not strong enough to say tv screen, video, computer, etc is haram.

This is not the same case as having a picture of some idol hanging on your wall. The tv itself can't be haram, but what you will be watching with it and especially with the cable box is another story. There is nothing that is completely evil. In everything bad, there is also other good usage. As the brother said, for example a knife can be used to kill people but at the same time it can be used for other things. Just as alcohol, it is haram for us to consume because it is harmful, but there are other benefits in such as ising it in other products which we do not consume. Islam is not some death cult or some version of certain Christian cults which completely renounce this world.

We Muslims don't believe that this world is evil. There are evil things in and we strive to avoid them but not everything can be labeled as evil nor do we have to reject this world completely. As for the lady you mentioned about the piano, I think I was reading her question the other day and I noticed she never wrote again. She was most likely got chased away and will not be back, but may Allah guide her amin. There was another lady that came to one of the masjids here in Atlanta and she was looking for information. She never been to a masjid and didn't know what to do. She hadn't even entered the inside of the lobby yet, she was still outside, and some man started screaming and shouting at her for coming up the stairs with her shoes on. She apologized and said she didn't know and things like that and he kept going at real loud. I couldn't believe it and she took off in a hurry.

To me this is just ridiculous and this is not the manners and behavior of a Muslim. This kind of stuff just makes me angry how people try to make everything haram, or just focus on everything that is haram when someone is just learning about Islam. It's almost like they are skiping the more important things that a truth seeker needs know such as the concept of Allah(swt), the purpose of life, judgement, our aqeeda, etc and later when they have embraced Islam, they'll want to seek more info and learn of things that are haram. It is absurd to jump into telling someone who knows nothing about Islam and tell them about haram things that even some practicing Muslims don't even know. It is best to take step by step and then go into deeper things and besides that Islam came in stages and for many people it is extremely difficult to just stop everything over night.

I don't believe that a tv, divd, video, computer, etc are all haram but it all depends what one is doing. Of course if we are doing things that are haram with it or watching haram things that is forbidden but one can use it for other purposes.

Assalaamu'Alaykum,

Alhamdu'Lillaah, you are right in what you say.

You have non-Muslims, but the focus is on expressing Tawheed and the correct Aqeedah to them. The same applies to Muslims as well who are not aware of such factors.

Obviously, telling them that TV or music is haraam etc would not be correct because at that time it is about conveying to them the Oneness of Allah.

But the point is, for a strong believer, the evils of television/satellite dish are apparent. There are very few good programs that I can think of as most contain something haraam which isn't suitable for a believer. Insha'Allaah refer to the Fatawa as it shows this.

Walaykum Salaam.
