Assalamualikum...

here i have reminder for reverts..perhaps u are busy in learning islam and adjusting ur islamic life..but at the same time u shouldn't forget to get a certificate which proves that ur a muslim..this cert can applied at any mosque or islamic center...

why u must have this cert?

1.it is important when u get married
2.it is important when u want to enter makkah for hajj/umrah
3.it is important for ur funeral(nauzubilla)

I have one..and other sisters have done it..so it is ur time to have one..

perhaps u might need to say the shahadah again infront of the person(imam or person incharge from islamic center) who is going to produce this cert

I have mine. It was supplied by the masjid in which I gave my shahada, signed by the president and 2 witnesses, one being the brother who took my shahada.

One of my most prized possessions :D

Do you mean surname?

I never knew that reverts should have a certificate to prove their conversion :shymuslima1: Jazakillah kheiran for enlightening me revert2007
not surname ...ur whole name....

some muslim countries like Malaysia has bint and ibni

in malaysia we use binti for muslim girl and bin for muslim guy

if u wanna keep ur name Alisya binti Johnson

now i know she is a muslim coz of the binti

or she change her whole name to Aishah binti Johnson

or in malaysia they change the father's name to Abdullah

Aishah binti Abdullah
or
Alisya binti Abdullah

whenever a person has Abdullah,we know he or she is a revert

but it is not recommended to change ur fathers name and no in any place in the world the reverts change their fathers name and it is only in malaysia :(

i still keep my old name with my fathers but i just change D/O(daughter of) to binti

Just to clarify and quench my curiosity:

So basically if you use d/o signifies you aren't a Muslim?

What of those whose fathers name is actually Abdullah? It's sad though that you change your father's name.

Aww, I'd like to have a muslim certificate, even though I'm not a revert :D

Why is it that if there is binti Abdullah after the name, you *have* to be a revert? Someone's father's name could normally be Abdullah anyway. :)

I did my shahada in the mosque.. but noone said anything about a certificate =S What if I can't get it.. the mosque is far from where I live. Can i ask it in the mosque where I go ?

Hard Rock Moslem

I'm your brother
Malaysia has 14 states under the federation and issues relating to Islam are state matter not Federal. Most states make condition whenever someone reverted, name will be changed with bin or binti Abdullah...e.g. below:

Orignal name: John
Preferred Islamic name: Yahya

So his name will be changed to Yahya John Bin Abdullah.

The middle name "John" and bin or binti Abdullah will indentify him is a revert. However, this is not compulsory but strongly encourage for identification purpose. But if revert to choose to maintain his father's name, it is allowed under the law e.g. Yahya John Bin Philips.

For reverts, we do have special attention from Religious dept on certain matters, therefore name will make it easy to indetify otherwise everytime revert wish to liaise with the dept must show their reversion ID.

The reason why normally bin/binti original father name will be discourage because it contain shirk name especially for ex-hindus so he or she will be son of Abdullah (slave of Allah), which generalize the name.

is this Sunnah? did Khalid bin Walid get a certificate when he converted in front of the Prophet pbuh?
those days they don't have such thing as cert...but these days u need it coz human are too complicated and they make ur life misserable lol

it is not sunnah but official thing for this dunya...

for example many said Michael Jackson converted but then where is the proof?if he had thsi cert there wouldn't be that much of problem regarding his funeral...

For me reverts should have a certificate once they are converted. This will help them a lot especially those who are converted but not exposed it to their family, friends or public. There is a case in Malaysia where this Hindu guy (if im not mistaken) who convert to islam without informing his family members and when he is died, his family and JAKIM fighting a lot on his burial matters whether it to follow hindus way or islamic way.Their family did not believe their son is muslim as there is no prove and evidence. There are actually quite a number of similar cases happening here in malaysia. that is why our government takes a big step to look into this matter seriously by encouraging reverters to have a certificate as a proof that they are muslim.

we must look it in a positive way. It will not only benefit a reverter, but others as well..

No one mentioned this to me either and I di not realise it was that important. Will have to contact the Mosque I took Shahada to hear what they say. I have since moved from that town.

Thanks to all for explaining in details how the names change and why it is done. Very enlightening Mashallah.

i guess u can go to any nearby mosque..not necessarily that particular mosque that u took shahadah...but u just need to say ur shahadah again before this new mosque could gv u the cert...

well in malaysia there are many NGO helping reverts..they will guide u and help u in any matter concerning u and islam...but i dont now how it works in other country..in malaysia it is a big thins and many people take it seriously and u will feel like home...u just hv to tell them what u need...
