Fast Food Restraunts: halal or haraam?

Um Ibrahim

Alhamdulilah :)
:salam2: brothers and sisters

I know many Muslims who eat from fast food restaurants on a daily basis, I myself eat from them from time to time; However I have heard that we as Muslims shouldn't because we don't know how the animal was slaughtered and if it was slaughtered in the name of Allah so this can make it haraam. And then I have also heard that no, since the U.S is mostly Christians, and we can eat meat of Christians that it is ok, and halal to eat from restaurants and fast food restaurants assuming that the animal was slaughtered and prepared by a Christian person/company. Restaurants Im talking about include but not limited to: mcdonalds, burger king, chipotle, taco bell, jack in the box, and all other small local fast food restaurants.

Please give me your opinions, suggestions/ and recent fatwas if you know of any concerning this issue. I would just like to know so I can stay away from any haraam food in the future inshaaAllah. And may Allah forgive me for the past Allahuma Amin.

i wish that i was better able to remember the exact chain of narration, but i read a hadith in Sahih Bukhari that an issue similar to this was mentioned that stated that if one had that doubt as to whether in whose name the slaughtered animal's name was in, that person should bless it in Allah's name. However, when one clearly knows that it was food dedicated to an idol etc that food was haram.

i'm sure there's a brother or sister here on TTI that knows the the exact narration of that hadith.

Islam is a way of life
A lot of fastfood chains will serve Halaal meat in other countries.

Like Saudi Arabia and such :)

1)An animal/s (still alive) that (from range categorise of halal to eat) belong to any non muslim or even muslim
but was slaughtered by a non muslim make it not halal for a muslim to eat.

2)An animal/s (still alive) that (from range categorise of halal to eat) belong to any non muslim or even muslim
and was slaughtered by a muslim is halal to eat.

So halal (still live )animals like Cow,goat, chicken, duck and others, that is halal for a muslim to eat is only halal to be consumed:if it was slaughtered by muslims only!

:ma:

For restaurant that serve fast food which does not belong to muslim but love to cater for muslims .
First: they have to under go certification form the board of muslim's authority(muslims council) to certified that they are serving halal food for muslims and their halal certification to be shown and be paste infront of their restaurant to acknowledge that all food served in their restaurant are halal for muslims to eat.

Yet,if found some other that are not halal or being served non halal food in their restaurant. Muslims reserved the right to file complain upon their restaurant immediately, for action to be taken.

Thank you,

Interesting! I didn't know that. Too bad there's no Popeyes close to me, the nearest one to me is almost nine miles away, but I think I'll call them to see if they do serve halaal meat.

Thanks for the info Jen:)

Sister Jzk for your responding, however I'm a little confused with what you wrote. What do you mean when you say "from range categorise of halal to eat?"

Maybe someone should make a website listing different restaurants that can be searched by zipcode or city or something, and which meats if any, can be eaten by Muslims at which restaurants.

I have had this problem before but alhamdulillâh I know about this issue now. I've read the fatâwâs of IslamQA and read Shaykh `Abdullâh `Azzâm's [rahimahullâh] book about Slaughtering... I do recommend you people to read his books about it because the shaykh tend to quote the Mad-habs.

I don't eat from any Kâfir restaurant since I live in The West and I know they don't slaughter the animals like we do. We have to remember that we can eat the meat slaughtered by Jews and Christians IF they slaughter it islamically.

Sadly many Muslims think that we can eat the meat of Jews and Christians... but forget that we can only eat if they slaughter it islamically. So I dont eat the meat of my kâfir country because I know they dont slaughter it islamically even if they are Christians. Please watch the NEWS, look how they criticise our slaughtering.

One time when I was in Egyptian plane, I ate their chicken, but I didn't know how they slaughtered it eventhough they call themselves Muslims. I didnt ask them because of the hadîth which says: ''Say Bismillâh and eat without asking them how they slaughtered it''.

Alhamdulillâh, I dont feel any doubt about this issue, after reading much about this. If I am not mistaken the Shaykh `Azzâm held the opinion that we should ask the people of the book about how they slaughtered it and explained the hadîth which says 'do not ask'.

I hope I didnt issue any Fatwa here, because Im only writing of what I have read from authentic sources.

The Ruling on Meat Slaughtered In the West

By Abdullah Azzam. During my visits to the West, and when I am being served meals on planes or in restaurants in Europe or America, I would find that I was very hesitant to eat the food, and I wanted very much to search for halal food and find that pure bite to eat in order to protect any part of my flesh from being nourished on haram, as the Fire is more deserving of every bit of flesh nourished on the haram.

Sepithol, good idea! I was thinking the same thing.

And I think the only solution to my little problem(not knowing what is halal or haraam) is just to stay away from all fast-food restaurants and just stick to ones that do offer halal meat. I was doing a lot of research and I think this is the best thing to do, I didn't know there are some restaurants, even fast food restaurants such as subway, popeyes, KFC etc that actually do offer halal meat.

Zabiha.com offers a list of halal restaurants around the U.S. and I was really relived to have found this website. I will just stick to those InshaaAllah. It's really just too confusing to figure out what is halal and haraam in many of these non-Muslim, and Muslim restaurants alike because of the fact that not all meat are even slaughtered these days, some companies use guns, or shock the animals before slaughtering them, and then the other major thing is WHO is slaughtering the animal. We all know that many people don't even believe in God, and some worship idols, and Muslims cannot eat animals slaughtered or handled by such people. Plus the sheikhs of our times are also confused, some make fatwas that say it's okay to eat the meat and some say to stay far away from it.

Dear Muslims I wish we spent more time discussing this kind of stuff; living in non-Muslim countries we are faced with these types of issues on a daily basis and it's really not discussed much in masjids or in forums such as TTI. Food is not the only thing, it's basically with everything from toothpaste, to vitamins, to snack and candy, to soaps and shampoos and the list goes on.

This is the other thing which just confuses me

Brother Idiris,

Jzk for recommending the book, inshaaAllah I will read it. This the other thing which used to always confuse me: we can eat the meat of the Christians and Jews: I'm not really sure about the believes of the Yahuud, but because the Christians worship Prophet Issa(AS) wouldn't they say the name of "Jesus" instead of God because they believe Jesus is God? and then I always hear if Christians say "bisimilaah" before the slaughter, how can they say it if they don't even know "Bismilaah"?

The Madhabs discuss that, they discuss whether its an obligation by the kâfirs to mention the name of Allâh or not. But I would advice you to read the book.. and things you are unsure about then look into IslamQA.

But say Alhamdulillâh, for eventhough they are Mushrikôn we can still eat their meat if they slaughtered it islamically and marry their women [under certain conditions!].

Interesting topic!!!!! Thanks for posting!

Just yesterday I was asked about eating at fast food restaurants by my niece who is a Seventh Day Adventist (Christian). She said "I thought you cant eat unclean meat" (according to the information she heard about Moses) so I explained to her we arent allowed to eat pork but we can eat other meat. I didnt go into the details of the way it needs to be slaughtered though.

I heard a sheikh on Huda TV just last week talking about this subject and he was referring to the people living in non Muslim countries where the meat is not slaughtered Islamically. He said that there were findings that suggest some food retailers were claiming the meat was halal but during intense investigation it was learned that the meat was not slaughtered Islamically.

When asked what our options are as Muslims he suggested that it would be better to say a blessing over the meat before eating it. He said saying "Bismillah" prior to eating the food would be sufficient in case the meat is not halal. I think its not a bad idea to do that even if we are told the meat was slaughtered properly and is halal because people can tell us anything but that doesnt necessarily make it the truth!

I agree.....showing appreciation to Creator for the food you are given just seems like the logical thing to do. Isn't that why some people "say grace" before eating?? That's how I understand the concept. If I'm wrong, please tell me...

I would say this but only as a personal opinion

but Haraam
Because the food is not healthy for you
And these fast food restaurants are part of huge multinational corporations
that don't consider people's true health/welfare/being
But only the bottom line and due to this will always try to sell the lowest quality and price for the most profit

But then again I don't know a single person(myself included) who does not eat fast food just due to the ease and convenience of it. It is a hard question to ask because fast food so permeates our lives in the world that it is almost impossible to avoid:SMILY139:
