“Humanitarian Wars are Good for Business”…. Speculators Applaud

War on Libya, Surge in the Price of Crude Oil

Michel Chossudovsky
Global Research
Friday, March 18, 2011

The establishment of a no fly zone is on the drawing board of the Pentagon. Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, supported by the Arab League and the Organization for African Unity (OUA) have labelled Libya as “An Unfriendly Nation”.

The scenario envisaged by Washington is to involve Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states in aerial attacks directed against Libya.

They have also called on Saudi Arabia to supply opposition forces with weapons.

Reports confirm that NATO special forces and military advisers to the rebellion are on the ground in Eastern Libya.

The geopolitical and economic implications of a US-NATO led military intervention directed against Libya are far-reaching.

Libya is among the World’s largest oil economies with approximately 3.5% of global oil reserves, more than twice those of the US.

A war on Libya would have an immediate impact on the price of crude oil. The latter has risen by 18 percent since the beginning of the insurrection in Libya.

It currently stands at $104.42 a barrel for April delivery on the New York Mercantile Exchange, its highest level since the financial crash of September 2008. Since August 2010, the price of crude oil has risen from 75.93 a barrel to 104.42 (March 2011), a hefty increase of 37.5 percent. A war directed against Libya would push the price of crude oil up to abysmally high levels, potentially triggering a global inflationary spiral, which would result in the impoverishment of large sectors of the World population.

A sizeable increase in the price of oil over a prolonged period would wreck economic havoc: production and transportation costs would increase dramatically. Hikes in the costs of fuel and energy would trigger a renewed string of bankruptcies in major sectors of economic activity. They would also contribute to a sizeable increase in the external debt of developing countries.

These price hikes, which are already ongoing, would occur despite the abysmally low costs of Middle East oil.

What this means is that powerful institutional speculators on Wall Street with links to the US military and intelligence establishment will cash in on billions of dollars in speculative gains not only in the oil market but also in the commodity and foreign exchange markets.

This money is appropriated from households which must now pay a higher price for fuel.

A “humanitarian war” would be “good for business”. It serves the interests of the institutional speculators, it contributes to a further process of appropriation of money wealth.

Financial institutions which had prior knowledge or intelligence of events in Egypt and Libya have already made billions of dollars in speculative gains in the futures and options markets for crude oil.

These global financial and banking institutions, which “placed their bets” several months ago, have “a vested interest in war”. The greater the turmoil and disruption of the crude oil market, the greater the speculative gains. Short term speculative gains due to market volatility are also part of this process. Foreknowledge of the sequence of political or military events and how they affect markets as well as control and/or manipulation of financial news pertaining to these events are an essential part of the betting process.

In this regard we are dealing the with workings of the World’s commodity exchanges, the most important of which is the powerful CME Group created following the merger of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME), the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) and the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX).

Political Rumors and Fake Information

The spreading of rumors and fake information is also a profitable undertaking particularly in relation to short-term movements of commodity markets:

…a rumor that Libya’s long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi had been shot tore across the commodities market, sending U.S. crude oil futures down more than two percent. Other rumors have had similar immediate and sweeping effects, even without real changes in actual oil production or reserves. The cause is oil speculators, such as hedge funds, who buy and sell commodities, profiting by betting on short-term price changes.

These traders are making money on quick movement, wagering on rumors and market blips. They are buying and quickly re-selling commodities they have no intention of actually holding or using. Their opportunism is once again hitting working-class families across the country, increasing the burden on small business owners and farmers,…. (Rep. Joe Courtney: Market Speculators and the Real Cost of Oil, Huffington Post, March 16, 2011)

Economic Sanctions

Economic sanctions have been imposed by the US on Libya thereby creating havoc in the supply of Libyan oil to the European Union. These sanctions are indirectly targeted at the European Union. They contribute to weakening Italy and France, which are heavily dependent on Libyan oil.

Libyan oil trade has virtually been paralysed as banks decline to clear payments in dollars due to U.S. sanctions (Reuters, February 8, 2011) “The move follows a decision by major U.S. oil firms to halt trade with Libya and makes it almost impossible for European firms to buy Libyan oil and supply refineries in countries such as France and Italy.

Banks have been instructed [by Wall Street and Washington] to freeze financial transactions: “Banks don’t want to finance the system in Libya, so for the moment no one is getting money for oil. There are big problems for payments,” said a senior trader with a European oil company.

“It’s not a matter of choice, there is an embargo on U.S. dollars coming in and out of Libya,” said a trader with one of the firms, referring to banks’ resistance to clear payments in the U.S. currency.

“All U.S. dollar transactions are being blocked,” the trader said, adding it was not clear at this stage if payments were possible in other currencies and whether any Swiss or European banks were willing to conclude transactions. Economic Impacts of a US-NATO Military Operation

If this military operation is carried out, oil prices will spiral, contributing to further exacerbating the economic crisis with devastating social consequences, particularly in the Europe Union, which is heavily dependent on Libyan oil.

The hikes in oil prices contribute to increased poverty, they also contribute to a concurrent increase in global food prices (which are also the object of speculative activity on the commodity exchanges) and more generally in the cost of living Worldwide. i.e the consumer price index.Wheat – Monthly Price – Commodity Prices

The fuel price hikes will in turn have a significant impact on the costs of transportation, international freight and air travel. At the height of a global economic crisis, it will further undermine both domestic and international trade.

All this is known and understood by the major economic actors including the politicians and the speculators. The politicians follow the guidelines set by Wall Street, which largely call the shots on government financial policy.

Regulation of the price of food staples or the retail price of gasoline is considered to be an encroachment on the workings of the “free market”.

What we are dealing with is a corrupt economic system which feeds on war and destruction.

The average price of gasoline at the pump in the US is of the order of 3.80 a gallon, in excess of $4 a gallon in California.

The speculators applaud! The media casually blames the price hikes on Gaddafi… “Households are cutting back on travel, cinema visits and groceries in the UK, where prices jumped to 130.68 pence a liter ($8.06 a gallon) on March 3, … Prices set records in the Netherlands and Italy. I pray brother that there is no bloodbath. Does Qaddafi not understand how he is leading the path to slaughter innocents. I do not understand. His end is imminent, why not come to peace.

Assalaam walaikum,

I just read this:

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon says U.S. and British ships and submarines have launched the first phase of a missile assault on Libyan air defenses, firing 112 Tomahawk cruise missiles at more than 20 targets along the coast.

Saturday's mission was aimed at clearing the way for imposition of a European-led no-fly zone over the North African country.

Navy Vice Adm. William E. Gortney, director of the Pentagon's Joint Staff, told reporters the Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired from one British submarine and a number of American destroyers and subs. He said they hit more than 20 air defense sites along the Mediterranean coastline. He said the success of the mission was not immediately clear, adding that additional attacks would commence later.

Gortney said the mission has two goals: prevent further attacks by Libyan forces on rebels and other civilians, and degrade the Libyan military's ability to contest a no-fly zone.

:salam2:I've watched a tv report on French TV where these rebels chant"Merci France" withh Kalashnikovs in the hands ,this reminds me of the Kuwaiti kissing of American flags back in the 90's guttless "Muhjahids" thanking the Kuffar Aajeeb to me.

I don't know what to think anymore. At first I was with them.Am aware that Quaddafi did horrible things but then to have another Neocolonial war by consent of these so called rebels and If among them there are puppeteers driven by private interest and false promises, may god damn them for the countless deaths along with Quadafi. If they think this is gonna make them sovereign to rule their own country, they can dream on.

There is no common ground to be found with a foreign army that is about to drop bombs on your country with God knows how much collateral damage, don't they have principles?. The ends do not justify the means in Islam and in any sane thinking mind less it is a fan of prostitution.

Don't they know history?,don't they read books?watch news?realize the countless deceptions?get curious about matters before actually starting such a mess!If not then they do not deserve to be in the forefront of the liberation struggle of any Muslim volk.Even the Donkey fled his master in industrialised and developed countries,he does not work for them anymore,he has retired,he is not needed,he eats his grass and chills somewhere reproducing himself.Yet we see humans wanting to take his place somewhere else in 2011.

This reminds me of Afghanistan in someways. Now am just neutral and want this mess to stop.We are never gonna be free this way.As far as Egypt is concerned it was different, much less violent, and there was no call for foreign military intervention, but in the end we still had Hillary doing the Catwalk in the land of the Shaheed there.what's the point.

Gonna stop reading about these matters I only got angry since yesterday by doing so,may Allah swt grant sabr and perseverance to all Muslims

Nicely put. Had we known she would be arriving and staining our peaceful square, we would have been there to kick her out all the way back to her country. Unfortunately the square was empty then.

My prayers are with Libya.

Assalaam walaikum,

In essence, the Muslim mind set has not freed itself from post colonial trauma.
We can not help ourselves, first. We are still searching for an identity.
In the US we have the example of the post Civil War era. There was distrust between the slaves who assigned to duties in the houses and those assigned to the fields. The Muslim nations are in need of understanding and trusting each other.
Muslims need to heal.

The juxtaposition of the Japanese disaster and the potential bloodbath in Libya is very difficult to comprehend.

:salam2:Well then Muslims who live in the west gotta stop either being apologetic in the face of people who do not even wash themselves after the restroom, testifying in some congress and I don't know what,or talking about hijra like big spoiled sensitive babies. We have to stand dignified and strong in the face of those who have enmity towards us,respectful and helpful with those who do not necessarily hate us and there are in the West as well.

If these so called representative governments are not ashamed of occupying Iraq,Afghanistan...etc ,shamelessly silent for Palestine, bomb, kill and advance with their tanks I do not see why some of us have to be Apologetic for merely choosing to believe what we believe, wear what we wear or eat what we eat without hurting anybody.Let' em think what they want. What are they gonna do,,Spy on us,kill us,insult us,,make money out of their own electing morons and play on their fears and what ?Allah made us free down here sky is the limit.

We are not here to please anyone but Allah swt as to our personal choices and this here is his earth. All of these issues are connected ,Muslims in these countries are standing up,those in the west still insecure sometimes. We have to take heed and mutually inspire each other.

The Arab regimes is another issue go figure.I guess they are stuck in their own internal quagmire ,why would they accelerate their own downfall...

I pray for the Libyan brothers, sisters and Mothers and all those who have genuine and legitimate aims over there no matter what.

Your confusion is quite understandable, brother justoneofmillion, but consider that priority one here is saving innocent Muslim lives. Priority two is removing tyranny. The Arabs and other Muslims didn't help, so what can our Libyan brothers and sisters do? Surrender to tyranny and waste the blood of thousands of martyrs, or stand by and watch the last one of them die?

Remember that the Prophet (PBUH) sought the help of a polytheist when he was migrating to Medina, and made a treaty with the polytheists and the Jews despite their expressed enmity to Islam. Muslims must focus on their priorities and not be occupied with resentment of the West to the point that they throw the baby with the bathwater.
:salam2:

I Know what you mean dear brother ,But he did not seek the help of those who were helping to kill Muslims and fighting Islam somewhere else, never. The ruler of Abyssinya was far from being a bleached African or a hating French midget Shylock who is Zionist to the bone trying to steal voices from the extreme right trough anti Islam propaganda and polarization politics.

May Allah swt help the Libyan brothers end this mess. And yes Qaddafi is a selfish fool,am the last one to stand for tyranny in any form.I hope it did not come across that way,Inshallah.

Ps.Please do carry on informing us.
Respectfully.

Islamic Relief USA is conducting fundraisers across the states to collect funds to support and help the refugee brothers and sisters who have crossed into Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria. Some of their representatives might have conducted the Khutbah at your local mosque this friday to raise awareness about the fundraising drive.

Needless to say, this is how we can contribute by easing the suffering of our brothers and sisters in this time of distress, rather than wasting our time just watching the news and doing nothing other than ranting and deliberating on the civil unrest.

The Khateeb who came to our masjid informed us that there are upto 300,000 civilians who are currently refugees and also a large number of expatriates who don't have the money to return home.

A small financial contribution from us can make a huge difference to our troubled brothers and sisters in Libya. So InshaAllah lets try to earn some ajar while helping our brethren in Libya out in this time of crisis. Also, we need to make sincere dua for our brethren in Libya and around the world who are in such tense and testing times.

It's good to know there are efforts being made elsewhere too for the Libyan cause. My post was not directed to anyone here in particular posting on this thread. Rather what I wanted to convey in general is that at times we get so engrossed in the affairs happening in places of crisis (thanks to the media outlets we have 24-7 news updates and *expert* analysis on every minute issue) that we forget to do our bit for alleviating the distress of our brethren who are in desperate circumstances.

Alhamdulillah most of us here are blessed with a comfortable life and can spare a few dollars/euros/dirhams/rupees and contribute towards organized humanitarian relief work that is taking place at the borders of Libya and assisting the refugees. And if we do not have means to do that, than atleast we can raise our hands in supplication for them.

Wasalaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi
