Sayings of Ibn Al-Qayyim al-Jawzziya:

What is the cure for the one who has illness in his heart or a deficiency in eemaan?

Shaykh Muhammad Ibraheem Al-Misree, حفظه الله:

Ibn al-Qayyim, رحمه الله, says:
“For the tongue does not keep quiet at all. It is either a tongue that remembers or a tongue that is frivolous and it has to be one of these two.

It is the (nature of the) soul; if you do not preoccupy it with truth, it will occupy you with falsehood. It is the (nature of the) heart; if you do not accommodate it with love of Allaah, it will dwell with love of creation and this is a certain reality. It is the (nature of the) tongue; if you do not preoccupy it with remembrance, it will most definitely occupy you with frivolity.

Thus, choose for your own self one of the two courses and confer upon it one of the two standings.”

[Al-Waabil as-Sayyib | Pgs. 166-167 | Ibn al-Qayyim, رحمه الله. Transcribed from: Causes behind the increase and decrease of Eemaan | Shaykh ‘Abdur-Razzaaq bin Imaam ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad]

Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) stated:

“Health is one of the most precious favours Allah has bestowed upon His servants, the most generous of gifts, the most plentiful of His bounties. Rather, even more, [good] health is the most precious of favours without exception; so it is fitting that whoever is granted a portion of this fortune, that he cherishes it, preserves it and guards it against harm.

Al-Bukhari narrated in his Saheeh from Ibn Abbaas that Allah’s Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

‘There are two blessings which many of the people lose out on: good health and free time.’

(Zaad al-Ma`aad, 4/196)

Brook in the desert

“Loving Allah resembles a brook in a desert with no millstone, and that is why there are few water-drawers. The lover usually wants to be isolated with his lover in privacy in order to find delight, the same as the whale resorts to water, and a child seeks his mother.” Ibn al-Qayyim

Life is a fading shadow

“O people who take pleasure in a life that will vanish; falling in love with a fading shadow is sheer stupidity” Ibn al-Qayyim

Repel, Repel, Repel

“Repel the thought, for if you don’t, it becomes an idea. So repel the idea; for if you don’t it will become a desire. So fight against that (desire), for if you don’t, it will become a determination and a passion. And if you don’t repel that, it will become an action. And if you don’t replace it with its opposite, it will become a constant habit. So at that point, it will be difficult for you to change it.” Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah

"True fasting is when the limbs fast from sin and the stomach fasts from food and drink. As food and drink can break the fast or spoil it, so sins can cut off its reward and spoil its fruits, as if one had not fasted at all." [Imam Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah

In addition to his academic and spiritual achievements, Ibn Qayyim was an accomplished archer and wrote a treatise on the subject as well.
