Abdul Azeem a graduate from Madeenah Uiv had given a lecture on this in Bangalore.
According what I remember (of the lecture) Islaam came much before Mahmood of Ghazni. It came during the time of Sahabas.
Two Sahabis Hakam as Thaqafi and Mugheerah ath Thaqafi came to India in a boat.
One of them landed in Sindh and other one in Thane near Mumbai...
Since I'm basically from this place, there distinct cultural difference in the Muslim there (where Sahabas have reported to have brought Islaam) compared to the rest of India...in terms of their Surname, usage of 'Arabic words in the local language etc etc...
Also, there reports of other Sahaba coming to Kerala in South long before Mughals and others...
