Driving while Muslim

Salaam,

Dear brothers and sisters I promised you a light post. I was on a major highway. It was about 9 am. The daylight was crisp. The air still had a little coolness in it. There was enough traffic to keep you alert. I was doding trucks to make time on a five hour trip.
Please keep in mind I wear hijab. My car is a luxury car. It is twenty years old. I purchase cars with cash..it is still new to me. I know why the mafia used cars like mine. It can easily accomadate six bodies in the trunk. When I purchase gas I never have to tell the young gas attendants the make and model of my car. They have stars in their eyes. All I need is for my sons to call the producers of Pimp my Ride and I would be set!
So there I am playing dodge ball with 18 wheelers...at my age I am pretty good at it..have done it for longer than most of you have been alive...I am in the left lane and from the corner of my eye I notice the Light...I quickly change my lane to the right..drat ...he follows me...the toughts of being Muslim in post 911 America flow through my head...
I have been stripped searched at airports..I have had my passport taken away... I had a plane that was stopped on the runway...I have been grilled by the feds...no I could not think..homeland security on the highway...
He pulls me over...I roll down my window...he asks for my license and registration...I pull out a flip-flop from my purse ( it is blue with big plastic yellow and orange flowers; it matches my handbag)...my son takes over and gives me my license and the state policeman finds my registration...
He very politely asks me did I know I was going 15 miles over the speed limit. I told him meekly I did not. He asked why I was in a hurry...he looked and saw:
I had four teenage boys, a full grown dog , a six week old kitten, and a pot of marigolds in my car.
He gave me a ticket $160.00 but realizing my situation he let me out of a reckless ticket by reducing my speed to one mile under reckless.
I drove the rest of the way not a mile over the speed limit with four teenage boys, a full grown dog, a six week old kitten and a pot of marigolds.

As-Salam sister,
It made me laugh. You are a better driver than me.
I drive 80-85 mph on 60 mph and I am alone in my car.

Salaam,

Sister if you had read a previous post I related the story.
But I will repeat it.

I was working a part time job when a co-worker came to me and told me about a puppy that was abandoned in the mountains and left in a shopping cart at a Walmart in December. She said she would only give it to a good family. She asked me. I kept the dog for five years and now she is happy at a farm.

I came home to find out that my neighbor who is developmentally delayed came to my sons with a six week old puppy that she could not feed anymore. Her father is a drug dealer..they often have no food in the house..the young woman was removed from his custody two months ago...she asked my sons to care for the dog..this way she could see it...Also, I live alone with my sons in a very colorful neighborhood. My dog is my security.

I was walking in the park with my sons when a two week old kitten came to us. Someone had cut its tail.

My heart is soft at times. But please do not judge me..that belongs to Allah subhana talla and often I feel these have been gifts for me..

As for the goldfish..my sons won them at a fair...I thought they would last overnight...a fifteen gallon tank later..they grew!!!

Now dear sister..if the dog chases the kitten and the kitten sees the fish tank...I will have a mess to clean up.

Is it not true that a prosititute was granted heaven for giving water to a dog?
I do need my dog for security. Thus it is not for pleasure that I have a dog. Why would I give up a good home for the dog to be put to sleep at the animal shelter.
I honor the creations of the creator.

Yes dear sister what you said about that prosititute is true but the prohibition of having dogs inside homes is authentic except for some reasons;

Prohibition on keeping dogs except those exempted by sharee’ah
What is the ruling on raising dogs in the house?.

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

It is not permissible for a Muslim to keep a dog, unless he needs this dog for hunting, guarding livestock or guarding crops.

Al-Bukhaari (2145) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, a qiraat from his good deeds will be deducted every day, except a dog for farming or herding livestock.”

Muslim (2978) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog that is not a dog for hunting, herding livestock or farming, two qiraats will be deducted from his reward each day.”

Muslim (2943) narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever keeps a dog, except a dog for herding livestock or a dog for hunting, a qiraat will be deducted from his good deeds each day.” ‘Abd-Allaah said: Abu Hurayrah said: Or a dog for farming.

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr said: This hadeeth shows that it is permissible to keep a dog for hunting and herding livestock, and also for farming.

Ibn Maajah (3640) narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.” Classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

These ahaadeeth indicate that it is haraam to keep a dog, except for those which were exempted by the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

The scholars differed as to how to reconcile between the reports which speak of one qiraat being deducted and those which speak of two qiraats being deducted.

It was said that two qiraats will be deducted if the dog is more harmful and one qiraat will be deducted if it is less so.

And it was said that that at first the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that one qiraat would be deducted, then the punishment was increased after that, so he said that two qiraats would be deducted in order to put people off from keeping dogs even more.

The qiraat is an amount that is known to Allaah, may He be exalted, and what is meant is that some of the reward for a person’s good deeds will be deducted.

See Sharh Muslim by al-Nawawi, 10/342; Fath al-Baari, 5/9

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said in Sharh Riyaadh al-Saaliheen, 4/241:

With regard to keeping dogs, this is haraam and is in fact a major sin, because the one who keeps a dog, except those for which an exception has been made, will have two qiraats deducted from his reward every day.

It is by the wisdom of Allaah that like calls to like and evil calls to evil. It is said that the kaafirs, Jews, Christians and communists in the east and the west all keep dogs, Allaah forbid. Each one takes his dog with him and cleans it every day with soap and other cleansing agents. But even if he were to clean it with the water of all the seas in the world and all the soap in the world, it would never become pure! Because its impurity is inherent, and inherent impurity cannot be cleansed except by destroying it and erasing it altogether.

But this is by the wisdom of Allaah, and the wisdom of Allaah is that like calls to like and evil calls to Shaytaan because this kufr of theirs is by the inspiration of the Shaytaan and the command of the Shaytaan, for the Shaytaan enjoins evil, immorality, kufr and misguidance. So they are slaves to the Shaytaan and to their whims and desires, and they are also evil and love vile things. We ask Allaah to guide us and them. End quote.

Secondly:

Is it permissible to keep dogs to guard houses?

Answer:

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made only three exceptions to the prohibition on keeping dogs: hunting, guarding livestock and guarding crops.

Some scholars are of the view that it is not permissible to keep a dog for any reason other than these three. Others are of the view that it is permissible to draw analogies between these three and similar or more likely cases, such as guarding houses, because if it is permissible to keep dogs to guard livestock and crops, it is more appropriate that it should be permissible to keep dogs to guard houses.

Al-Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim (10/340):

Is it permissible to keep a dog to guard houses, alleys and the like? There are two points of view. The first is that it is not permissible, because of the apparent meaning of the ahaadeeth, which clearly state that keeping dogs is forbidden except for farming, hunting and herding. The more correct view is that it is permissible, by analogy with those three cases, knowing that the reason that is understood from the ahaadeeth is necessity. End quote.

The view that was classed as saheeh by al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him), that keeping a dog to guard the house is permissible, was also classed as saheeh by Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) in Sharh Saheeh Muslim. He said:

The correct view is that it is permissible to keep a dog to guard the house, because if it is permissible to keep a dog in order to benefit from it, as in the case of hunting, it is more appropriate that one be allowed to keep a dog in order to ward off harm and protect oneself.

End quote.

Salaam,

I appreicate your thoughts. It would kill me to put the dog in an animal shelter. I keep her as I am alone with my sons. My neighborhood is not the best. We have elderly and good families but we also have prositution and drug elements. I forbid my sons to play at the park...I have seen needles and other nasty things. The police turn a blind eye.
I will not be robbed and my house will be safe.

Sister, I left a broom outside and someone stole it in five minutes. Besides she is a better companion than my former husband..she listens to me.

As long as you keep it for security and outside home then it's ok,but could you afford being deprived from the entering of the engels to your home and to lose daily as that much of your good deeds.I'm quite sure that you'll get me right,I don't mean to offend you at all.

Salaam,

You painted a vivid picture in my mind and I couldn't stop laughing

How can your grandma car drive that fast? You should have your odometer recalibrated LOL. I didn't know cops existed in the boondocks of West Virginia LOL

If you take a Driver Improvement class (which I recently took too) it shows that you took immediate action and if you attend court, they will usually lower your points & fee, and who knows if the officer will show up.

Dearest Halah...how could I be offened with one who wishes me the best???

sis what ever happened to tawakallah and placing your trust and reliance on Allah and not the dog to protect you... do you read your dailay adhkars? qul huwalahs every night...ayatul kursi and surah al baqarah cos that is sufficient.... dogs are nijas and unclean and have many bacteria on them..think about it

Salaam,

Sister I thank you. I do place all my turst in Allah subhana talla. I feel I serve Him. I found myself helping another human being...a young woman who could not look after something she loved ; a young woman who was seeking turst and love in the world; a young woman who was raped and became pregnant and her child was taken away from her; and she entrusted it to me...she still comes and plays with the dog.
I leave the judgement to Allah subhana talla. I pray for forgiveness everyday. I lower my gaze and attempt not to judge others but offer compassion. Even the slugs feel safe in my garden.
Sometimes Sister I feel that I think too much. However life is about action. I have stopped bringing in stray humans home. It got to be too much on my former husbands. But that is the topic of yet another post.

We always insist that Islam is an easy religion to follow but make a mountian out of a mole-hill when it comes to small issues (such as keeping dogs). As per one of the posts, the scholars are of 2 opinions and one of them is that its okay to keep dogs for protection. Can we all not let that be the decision of the person than advising for/against it?

My mom always insisted that whatever you do, Allah will judge you for your "niyat" i.e your intentions. If the intention of mirajmom is to seek protection with the dogs then so be it. Its her good intention to not let the dog put in an animal shelter where it may be tortured/killed/put to sleep.

One more thing - Having absolute faith in Allah does not mean that you do not do anything. One has to balance Deen & Duniya (religion and the worldly affairs). You can't just keep praying in the desert and wish that you will be provided with food without working everyday. You will have to work to get food. Similarly, the duas are good but at the same time there is nothing wrong with taking a few precautions (such as this case). Mirajmom's neighbourhood seems to be bad and only she knows the gravity of it. We are no one to pass judgements and fatwas on someone else's sitaution.

These are my thoughts. My apologies (in advance) if I offended anyone. I am saying this because I have seen people on TTI becoming very aggressive and taking it very personally.

As salamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wabrakatuhu dear Aapa

Hope you are doing well by the grace of Allah Subhanahu wa Taala. You are truly a gem. May Allah bless you and your family and keep you safe from the evils, trials and fitnah of this dunya.

My humble request to fellow Muslim brothers and sisters, please keep on the topic. Don't go off the topic. The thread is not about dogs.

We have a job at hand. Make ourselves stronger in order to face the fitnah, trials and tribulations of this world.

I know everybody out here loves dear Aapa.

Mirajmom, you take others "moutain out of Mole hills" with such stride and grace. You can imagine how I would have replied! LOL!!!! And I agree, I think Dogs make better companions sometimes too.....unfortunately we don't have one but I did growing up Mr. Mic Jagger, a male Black Lab, he was a great protector of me and my brother. I remember once, we were out playing in the yard and Mic perked up and seemed agitated, we looked around and running down our drive was a field rat from the farm across the street. Mic looked at us and barked at us and then took off to meet the rat and killed it by it's throat.....kind of like he was warning us to stay back. Dogs are VERY smart and keen about so much.
